  • Splinter Bids can be made by the Opener, Overcaller, Responder, or Advancer. Splinters are usually a double jump, often made at the 4-Level. Here is an example of a Splinter at the 3-Level. Jumping to 4♠ over 1♥ would be a suggestion to play.
    Splinter Bids always show three things;
    1. Slam Interest (17+ HCP by Opener, 13-15 or 18+ HCP by Responder)
    2. 4+ card support for partner
    3. 0-1 card in the suit that is jumped to
    3♠ = 0-1 Spade, 17+ HCP, 4+♥, Slam Try
    4♥ = Sign off, weakest action
    In general, if you have the King, Queen or Jack in the suit that your partner has Splintered in, that is bad. Those would be considered wasted values since they are unlikely to help the declarer get rid of losers. And so, South should sign off and bid 4♥.

    After the defenders play 3 round of ♣s, pull trumps, cash ♠s and then finesse in ♦s.
