  • Power Pop Shakers! New Releases/Reissues #20 (Albert Hammond Jr, Guided By Voices, Exploding Hearts)
This is the 20th episode of 'Power Pop Shakers!', where I talk about power pop new releases and the odd reissue.
There is a thriving international power pop underground scene, which I aim to promote with this series of videos. As much as I love the classic power pop acts like Big Star, The Raspberries, Cheap Trick and The Flamin' Groovies, it's always great to discover new bands from around the world with their own unique take on the genre.
If you go to my channel, and click on 'Playlists', you'll find a playlist called 'Power Pop Shakers!', where you can listen to the music I'm talking about. The intention is to keep adding to the playlist, so that it becomes a useful one-stop shop to discover new power pop bands.
    In this video I mention:
THE CHILLS 'Party In My Heart' ('Brave Words', LP, Fire; to be released in October 2023)
RONNIE D'ADDARIO 'A Shot In The Dark' ('All Gathered In One Room', CD, Homburg)
THE DICTATORS 'Crazy Horses' (Download EP, Valley Entertainment)
THE EXPLODING HEARTS 'So Bored'/'Modern Kicks' ('Guitar Romantic', LP, Third Man Records)
FULL TIME MEN 'We Were Using' ('Part Time Job', CD/LP, Yep Roc; to be released on the 27th October 2023)
THE GOODS 'David Jones Is Dead'/'Hear Me' (7-inch EP, Dandy Boy)
GUIDED BY VOICES 'Meet The Star' ('Welshpool Follies', CD/LP, GBV Inc)
ALBERT HAMMOND JR 'Old Man'/'Memo Of Hate' ('Memories On Hiatus', CD/LP, Red Bull)
DAVID JOHN & THE MOOD 'I Love To See You Strut (Alternative Version)' ('Diggin' For Gold', CD, Cherry Red)
THE LEMON SHERBETS 'Between Two Smiles'/'The Magical Mr E' ('More Affordable Lemons, LP/CD, 7a)
LOST SHIPS 'The Brittle Heart Foundation' ('Atoms Collide Forever', CD, Subjangle)
MEYERMAN 'Happy To See You' ('Happy To See You', LP/CD, Pretty Decent)
THE MIDNIGHT CALLERS 'New York Tramp' ('Rattled Humming Heart', Jem, CD/LP)
MUCK AND THE MIRES 'Cool Imposter' ('Beat Revolution', LP, Dirty Water)
MUD 'Dyna-Mite' ('The Singles 1973-1980', 3CD, Cherry Red)
THE POPPERMOST 'Carry On Swinging' (7-inch EP, Rogue)
THE SOUND OF POP ART 'Stuck In Felixstowe'/'Barbed Wire' ('Shapes And Shadows', CD/LP, England In June; I also uploaded 'Listen' and 'It's Not True' by Chris Free's former band The Users)
STAR COLLECTOR 'Feel It All Comin' On'/'Beat It To Death'/'Running Through The Rain' ('Attack, Sustain, Decay ... Repeat', Download album, Clockwise)
THE STEMS 'She's A Monster' ('Mushroom Soup: The Citadel Years', LP, Cheersquad)
TAXI GIRLS 'Sunshine' (5-track 12-inch EP, Wild Honey - Europe; cassette, Dirt Cult - USA)
VARIOUS ARTISTS 'Heroes Of The Night Vol. 2: Punk, Pop & Wave From The UK Underground '80-'84' , LP, Reminder
This is a 'Vinyl Melange Cheap 'n' Cherrful' production for vinyl and CD collectors, crate diggers and fans of the international power pop underground scene.

@@brianwoods2395 Hi Brian. I agree about 'Submarine Bells'. Have you seen Martin Phillipps live? I saw him pre-Covid.

Hi Carl - First off, I have to send a letter to TH-cam, because your video was up 8 days ago, and it never appeared in my feed! I've liked everything I have heard from The Chills. Lots on interesting sounding stuff that I am sure I will like. I will dig into the playlist. Congratulations on 20 quality episodes 🙂

I've managed to find another new Canadian band for this video - Taxi Girls, a three-piece from Montreal. Plus the latest album from Star Collector (Vancouver) ... Thanks for the congratulations! ... The Chills' reissue of 'Brave Words' with an extra disc should be a good one.

These are great Power Pop Shaker cuts Carl. Where do you find these? Another great comprehensive look at groups I've never heard of. "Snotty Bubblegum Pop Vocals." That's great Carl, just great!

Hi Tarrtruck! New (and reissue) quality power pop releases were a bit thin on the ground earlier in the year. There is so much good stuff though at the moment ... I search for the stuff I like via various sources - Bandcamp, power pop blogs, websites that sell power pop, music magazine websites, power pop labels' websites and the odd radio show (such as El Sotano at rtve.es) ... As always thanks for your support and comments.

@@carltweed942 Always great stuff Carl. A real deep dive into the rare and unknown (at least for me). I'm definitely leaning a lot. Nice Job!
