Why Paper Mario 64 feels WAY bigger than the Thousand Year Door

Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door is one of the most popular Paper Mario games, which I don't understand. Paper Mario TTYD is a backtracking mess!
Every Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door Chapter forces players to run back in forth over and over again. Which is a real shame because Paper Mario 64 didn't have this much backtracking. And that's all thanks to how Paper Mario 64 sets up its stage screens and transitions.
