This video was recorded sometime after Joe Elliott's 22nd birthday on August 1, 1981, but before Rick Allen's 18th birthday on November 1, 1981. Joe Elliot mentions the band members ages during the interview, his being 22, but saying the Drummer Rick Allen was 17. So sometime between August 1, 1981 and October 31, 1981, in the United States.
We met them back stage in San Diego late 80s. Joe was funny roudy, Phil was talkative. Steve was quiet, I talked to Steve about what it is like on stage and he lit up in conversation. Fun talented young folks

I agree 100%. And I wish that I could tell the wonderful Beryl Clark that too. She is a great mum who misses her boy, I think of her often. And he was sweet, gentle, thoughtful and sensitive soul.
I really wish he was still with us, he had more talent in his two hands than many people had in their entire being, but unfortunately he had a problem he poured alcohol into.

I really wouldn't have thought that interviews or even videos of the band would exist from the time there was the Clark and Willis duo. Really cool interview seeing that this was from around the time High 'n' Dry was released in 1981.
@Bibi Perez Ah ok, I had a feeling it was during High N Dry since Joe talked about them finishing the music videos for "Let It Go," "Bringin on the Heartbreak," and "High N Dry (Saturday Night)." Thank you.

I wonder how much of the band's drinking was due to their success at such a young age. I saw them for the 1st time at the Oakland Auditorium in 1981 opening up for Blackfoot. During Rocks-Off, Pete Willis was leaning out into the crowd and a fan grab his guitar off of him. Steve Clark had to play both rhythm and lead until Pete finally got his guitar back from Security. After the concert, I got the chance to join the band back at their motel where there was lots of beer drinking and pizza. And someone managed to find the Benny Hill Show on TV. I don't think anyone knew how successful they would later become except maybe Joe Elliot and Mutt Lange.
Joe is so adorable, young and a beautiful, sexy man!! It's cute he's a bit drunk here but on stage a true professional all the way.Def Leppard Rocks!! I Love you Joe💋RIP Steve you sweet man💕
Joe Elliott is the ultimate frontman ...gosh , he was gorgeous in the 80s and quite the charmer ... he's definitely had a few prior to this interview...he was a total fox
Thanks to Joe telling us everyone's current age, by looking up their birthdays we can figure this interview had to be August, September, or October 1981.
karen glenn....I can only speak for myself but sure since this genius passed and the band has really, with the odd good song aside, they've toured off the back catalogue this genius left them. What REALLY makes me white hot with rage is both Sav and Joe have been truly factual, and honest about the incalculable input from Steve. Steve was 'the' primary songwriter, period. Sure, on many tracks up to "Adrenalize" several band members are co writers, BUT Steve was the actual member who penned the overwhelming majority of the songs that would see 'Pyro' sell 25 million records plus, and 'Hysteria' 25 million plus also. Leppard, t6hanks to Steve3's massive input are with Van Halen the only bands in this genre to have x2 records be certified Diamond twice by the RIACC.. Elliot's speech at the RRHOF induction regarding 'Steamins' input arguably is the most specific and honest he's ever been. He has said in interviews "Steve's input was enormous", so one has to be objective, facts and evidence. But Sav in multipole interviews has never to my knowledge, ears, footage been honest. Elliot has always been the 'driver', like Sixx in Crue, both are really the engine that propelled their respective bands onwards, with enormous help from 'Mutt' especially after the start. Interestingly, Joe's leadership of the band was not really relevant when the band started to actually tour, in support of AC/DC which 'Mutt' had worked with, and this ticket slot gave Leppard a massive start. But it was Steve who threatened twice to quit the band and he told them "I don't want to be in this fucking spoon factory still rehearsing". That demand saw Leppard for the first time start to push for gigs that'd help put them in the frame for success and longevity. Steve's influence, input, if one is again objective can also be assessed since he tragically passed away by the fact Leppard's career has never hit the heights that it did when Steve was writing, and also critically, his enormous, you cannot quantify the impact Steve had in creating so many of the songs. His ability to create harmonies, melodies, riffs, hooks and bends was staggering. Even the great Viv is both humble as always and honest about this, he said last year verbatim and I'm sure both Joe/Sav would not have been happy to hear this, but Viv said "90% of what we play Steve left us". And he also added, due to the enormously complex way Steve created the songs, his writing of the music [he was a classically trained guitarist], and Viv will often say today "I still can't play GoW". Steve was just unique. Extremely gifted. I've written several times my opinion is Steve's abilities and just staggering skill sets lyrically and musically, let alone oozing rock star cool strapped low, his deft use later on of his Kahler on his magnificent Gibsons now gone, as the set list changed when Viv reverted from his Charvels to a LP, Collen now has taken over significant parts that Steve made magic with with his Floyd Rose touch, always a massive part of Collen's playing. The real sadness is in his loss before he had a chance to see what the computer chip would do in terms of technology. Phil was asked "what do you think Steve would be doing today, his musical interests"? Collen answered "Steve probably I think would've ended up in the film, movie business as he always liked that area, creating music for feature films". Tragically we'll never know.
@@williambroadstreet3353 I have to disagree with you about Elliott. As the years have passed, he has made Steve's contribution smaller and smaller with his comments. he has made remarks about Steve being a lost cause, and that having the hotel room next to Viv on tour, at least they knew that Viv would wake up the next day. Sav on the other hand, has taught his son Tyler all about Steve. Tyler is in a band called the Crossfire Eagles and has stated this his main influence is Steve. He was born after Steve died, so that has come from his dad, and at the RRHOF it was Sav who blew a kiss to the sky at the mention of his name. But I agree with you completely on everything else. Steve was the magic of that band which is why they're still touring off their old stuff.
Adrenalize was a so-so record and Slang was straight-up terrible. And this following Hysteria, which gets a non-neglible percentage of votes as the greatest hard rock album ever recorded... it tells you pretty much everything you need to know about who wrote the music in that band. Joe Elliott is a tremendous frontman with an inimitable voice, but his weakness as a lyricist was really exposed once he was no longer getting those genius riffs from Steamin Steve.
VERY RARE. Thank God it's on video, sadly there's not a lot with this genius being interviewed especially in this context. This was before his girlfriend convinced "The Riffmaster" to grow out his locks. An excellent interview, love it when the chain smoking Steve bots a smoke off someone in the room. Hilarious.
Do you have the whole interview? Just when they were talking covers it cut off. But thanks so much, that was great to watch. Steve was such a sweetie, Joe was always ballsy but Steve was so quiet. Much love, miss Steve a lot. RIP
They were both extremely insightful and wise for their age. I’m 28 and I would wave my arms for them after hearing this interview in the 80s. Their mental age was high. They did a lot of thinking.
I remember seeing them for the first time, I thought ALL of the band members were gorgeous ,... Joe Elliot had dark hair like he did in this interview...( I fell in love)... So a few years later, me and my best friend went to see them... Joe Elliot came out with blonde hair... And the whole time I had been telling my friend, "OMG just wait till you see the singer.,".. Well, I was confused with the blonde hair, and I said ,": oh no, they have a new singer"... And then he started singing., and we were right on front of the stage , and I started screaming.," OMG, IT'S HIM"!!!.,; but to be honest, I thought the whole band was hot., Phil Collen, was sexy... Steve Clark was sexy, Rick Savage was sexy , and Rick Allen... You just wanted to cuddle with him... At this second time, I was in front of the stage, and Rick Allen came in front of the stage with the rest of the band... And the crowd went freaking crazy...!!!!., the other band members kind of walked away..., while the audience kept screaming, "RICK, RICK, RICK.... we didn't want him to leave, we were in such Awe, over what he had accomplished., it was very damn special.. To say the least...I fell in love the first time I saw them.,I think I was 16...I am still in love with them, and I'm 59..I thank God that these guys never gave up!!
Steve is only 21 and already showing signs of alcoholism with the black under his eyes. Great to see them at such a young age, still love their music and it always puts me in an awesome mood listening to them!!!
His eyes look fine. Pffft... He was a dedicated closet alcoholic - never drank in public ( to the point of intoxication) and that comes from every member of the band. They all say, especially speaking on the subject, he was a complete professional on tour and in the studio. It's when the band had solo down time apart, that he would go on serious, ultimately deadly benders.

1981? Is Pete in these videos?
Well get them uploaded to youtube here then, hubba hubba, let's go!
I Love you Joe💋RIP Steve you sweet man💕
@🤟🏼🤟🏼🎤🎤💖
"Ow! I just banged me funny bone! Ow, I just banged me head!" LOL! So cute!
Joes so cute!!! Drunk for sure
Over Whelming Talent 🎶🎸🎸 Steven Maynard Clark 🍯🎤💿 , If *IT* wasn't for STEVEN ! There wouldn't of been Def Leppard ! Whom SHALL Forever Be in My 💖
Joe Elliott is the ultimate frontman ...gosh , he was gorgeous in the 80s and quite the charmer ... he's definitely had a few prior to this interview...he was a total fox
Joe Elliott is/was GORGEOUS❤
Rip Steve. 🙏
Very bitter sweet now - Good times that will never be forgotten :) x
Thanks to Joe telling us everyone's current age, by looking up their birthdays we can figure this interview had to be August, September, or October 1981.
Love this!! Two great guys right there, R.I.P. Steve man wonder what it would be like if he was still here with them
Sexy eyes on Joe. But I think Steve Clark is gorgeous.most beautiful smile in the world
Awww they were so sweet
I love these guys 🎸🎵
14.05 Steve wrote the music!!
Yeah.... yet another piece of original evidence from the band themselves.
@@ClarkOVision His musical contribution seems to have been forgotten over the years by some of the band who should just shut up.
karen glenn....I can only speak for myself but sure since this genius passed and the band has really, with the odd good song aside, they've toured off the back catalogue this genius left them.
Brown haired joe> blonde haired joe
Totally agree 👍
Yes I also agree
Joe is such a Shovenist 🥴 But ; Steven is Def Leppard 🎶🎼😇💓❤️🔥
Not sure I agree with you about Joe.
Listen closely around 8:00 you can hear Randy Rhoads in background "Crazy Train!"
VERY RARE. Thank God it's on video, sadly there's not a lot with this genius being interviewed especially in this context. This was before his girlfriend convinced "The Riffmaster" to grow out his locks. An excellent interview, love it when the chain smoking Steve bots a smoke off someone in the room. Hilarious.
Joe is a right lad but then most men from Sheffield are like that. I’m married to one - so I definitely know. ❤
Do you have the whole interview? Just when they were talking covers it cut off. But thanks so much, that was great to watch. Steve was such a sweetie, Joe was always ballsy but Steve was so quiet. Much love, miss Steve a lot. RIP
There's Steve! We're gonna miss you White Lightning
I agree about Rick Allen. His natural curly hair and baby face 😊❤. But the whole band in general were gorgeous.
Right at the end is ehat got me about them mentioning travelin band by creedence. And they infact did cover that on the pyromania tour
Love this Leppard of 1981. Pete Willis era. Pete Willis was the best with Steve Clark
I blame his father. That part of the movie was correct. His dad was an ass.
@@BethWondrely....
He must have. 😢
so funny, they must be absolute fun to hang with
@🤟🏼🤟🏼🎤🎤💖
5:49 he is so me 😂
7:33 omg 😂😂
7:52 stopp😂😂😂
16:07 aw steve is so cute interacting with joe😢
Great band. I saw them twice in 1980. In Houston they opened up for Judas Priest (my ears rang for 2 days), and also with Ted Nugent. Def Leppard and Scorpions were opening acts!
I was 14 and a half. 😊
Love you steve and joe!!
13:40 Randy Rhoads heard live. Saw Lep on 3/19/83 on the one year anniversary of Randy's passing. Lep did Traveling Band as a tribute to Randy.
THE HIGH N DRY ALBUM IS THEIR BEST. BY FAR. KILLER RECORD.
