    Great interviewer and a great insight into the minds of these two back in 83' and how it's totally obvious that they where destined to become huge as a band.
    I must admit that at the time, this bands mystique and aura was undeniably difficult to ignore. When back in 83' you could be attracted to the whole onslaught of what was available from when many bands that are here even today, yet began to become loved and proved, like here, of how great they were. Still back then, it was difficult to get news or interviews of these bands, and was a complete thrill to happen to stumble on to something by turning on the tube during a music program or buying one of several music magazines. Seeing these long lost interviews 30+ years later is quite the trip down memory lane. A time when music had substance so deep, it even overflowed with true talent. Great writers, great players, great performances and even style and good looking to boot. Yep, Def Lepp had it all. And to be honest, even at this stage, they still do.

    Joe Elliot always had a good head on his shoulders. He knew what he wanted for the band and semmed very grounded. Down to earth guy. Even today I bet you could sit down and have a beer with him and he would be like any normal guy. Just look at some of the famous people today...those that are not grounded to their roots fall away.

    Wow such down-to-earth perspectives! I am just now getting into Def, and I have to say I like Joe Elliot a lot, Rick Savage seems to be the nicest person, quiet yes, but when he opens his mouth to say something, he seems so gentle and kind. Hope that's the real deal, never been to a show or backstage for that matter. But I wish them all the best, wished Joe would have taken better care of his voice though. They are coming to the Iowa State Fair in August. Going to be playing on the Grandstand. Break a leg fellas.

      Wow what a year and a half for me personally. The Guys came to Cedar Rapids last year, was able to by a ticket (dispite the fact I was struggling and didn't have any financial independence), don't drive, so was depending on a friend to take me to the venue and back home, he got sick the day of, I couldn't find any other transportation to Cedar Rapids, and didn't get to go to the concert; I was upset and pissec and heartbroken, but took it in stride. (Drank 4 glasses of wine on my balcony that night). My boss and coworkers knew/know my troubles and loss and they don't get tired of telling the story of me missing the concert. This has a happy ending I promise. They are coming back to Des Moines next month, going be rocking Wells Fargo Arena. My birthday is the 17th, they will be playing the 24th and another friend is treating me for my birthday. I can't wait. This is karma working my behalf. Somewhere, the Man Upstairs orchestrated their tour so that it would stop in Des Moines close to my birthday. Am sooooo phyced.

    • @bellroad100
      @bellroad100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you seen the press conference from a European rock festival from around 2013 (possibly Monsters of Rock, but don’t quote me), where different journalists are asking questions of Sav, Phil and Joe? Some of the questions asked are really stupid, but there is one in particular that wins the prize...the guy asked them if Def Leppard could be a food, what would it be? LOL! And you can tell that Sav, Joe snd Phil are in disbelief! It’s right out of Spinal Tap...especially when a reporter asks them about their most embarrassing stage moments! Sav totally cracks me up with his answer! 😂

    Listen to them. They actually have some brains! They can follow what's being discussed, speak in complete sentences and have some social perception regarding the topics presented. " 'no wha I sayin'?...yo!....yuh..well...no wha I sayin?.."

    My favorite band of all time, but imo they really screwed up their potential. They should've stuck to the Pyromania-type sound, a sound that really was just flat out fantastic rock. Hard and heavy like AC/DC, melodic, fun, extremely listenable, and brilliantly written. You could roll down the windows, head bang to Foolin, drive 70 miles an hour and the temptation to go 120 was right at the bottom of your foot. Then all the while, you could plug headphones in, clean your house or whatever, and sing along to Photograph or Bringin On The Heartbreak and be completely relaxed. I'm not dissing Hysteria, I really do love it, but I think that if they stuck to that Pyromania sound for a few more albums, they'd be up there with Zeppelin, Stones, Metallica, bands many people regard as the best ever in rock. Just a brilliant sound. Everything beyond Hysteria was just too...wussy. But that's just my selfish opinion, wishing they played to suit my tastes. It's their band.

      wow man, you literally took my thoughts right out of my head. If Hysteria had 'Foolin' type songs on it, it would have done a lot better!

      I don't think it would have done "a lot better". Didn't Hysteria have like five top ten hits? A few number ones?

      The main thing that influenced where the sound of Def Leppard went was Mutt Lange. The sound of the band is a direct product of what HE wanted it to be, and the band put their fate in his hands. It's why you hear the distinct change from On Through the Night, to High 'n' Dry, to Pyromania, and finally Hysteria. It was a progression in production and polish. Hysteria was Lange's attempt, and quite successful I might add, at making the rock and roll Thriller album, and in the end proved to be the most successful for them at around 25x platinum. Funny so many people keep mentioning ACDC considering he crafted their sound on the main three most memorable albums they did as well. ACDC, Def Leppard, and just about every other popular rock band started falling off in the 90's due to the changes in the industry, that wasn't unique to Def Leppard.
      Leppard were always open about their influences being more on the pop end though, and were much more successful in showing an evolution in sound rather than stagnating and being stuck in a rut, such as ACDC. I always looked at them as more like a rock/edgier version of Queen. A soundscape that changed over decades, and no fear of where they were going or where they came from. Hell, Joe says it in this interview and it was back in 83, they don't want to sound like the last album...... Something many a band, like ACDC have a problem with. I'm not knocking ACDC, I love em' as much as the next guy, but at the same time, they haven't changed in decades. I think the variety out of Leppard was a good thing.

    "Next album won't be for 12 months or more" LOL .. if he only knew... 48 months or more. But worth the wait, Hysteria is their magnum opus.

    • @Almeida5
      @Almeida5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hmmm...In my opinion, if one is talking about Hysteria as their magnum opus from a record sales/financial success, then I totally agree. I think that both Pyromania and High 'n' Dry were better records. I think Hysteria could have been that record, but I think some of the best stuff from the Hysteria sessions were left off, such as "Tear It Down", "Desert Song", "Fractured Love", "Ring of Fire", and "I Wanna Be Your Hero". Mutt was even quoted in "Animal Instinct" by David Fricke as saying how he couldn't believe the band wanted to leave off those songs. I would have loved the album to have a track order which looked something like this:
      1. Women 2. Desert Song 3. Fractured Love 4. Rocket 5. Ring of Fire 6. Gods of War 7. Don't Shoot Shotgun 8. Run Riot 9. I Wanna Be Your Hero 10. Hysteria 11. Tear It Down 12. Love and Affection.
      I would have left off in order "Pour Some Sugar On Me" (awful song), "Love Bites", "Excitable", "Animal" and "Aramageddon It".

    • @RealDarkFilm
      @RealDarkFilm 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Almeida5 Yeah, take out Pour Some Sugar on Me and Love Bites, that would obviously make the album better.

    • @no_stick_drummer2735
      @no_stick_drummer2735 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RealDarkFilm the songs would have been on retroactive anyway so it doesn't matter if you leave them on or take them off

    • @RealDarkFilm
      @RealDarkFilm 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No_Stick_Drummer The songs this guy said to take off are part of the reason why Hysteria was so successful. Even if they put it on RetroActive it wouldve been too late bc the genre was much less popular when Retroactive came out then what it was in the 80s.

    • @FreeMTrider
      @FreeMTrider 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As much as I can't stand Pour Some Sugar on Me......it was the song that catapulted Hysteria to number one. Aramageddon It is a great song and Animal is awesome too.

    I've been Following Def Leppard SINCE 1978!, Later, from
    1986-thru the 1990s, I took Guitar Lessons ( There was no Social Media then
    ),--- JUST TO LEARN HOW to play their Songs, MY FAVORIES are from the 1st 5
    Albums, I do not have an Account on here, when i sing and play, it's usually on
    Facebook, so nobody sees it here, it's just it did not get around to creating
    an account on here....Down the road I will., :) ..Thanks, :)
