Rick Allen is a very down to earth guy. Got to meet him in Des Moines at their Def Leppard/Journey concert in 2018, got some great pics with him. Much respect for Rick and what he has been through and had to go through to be the person and great drummer and artist he is now. Got to see his artwork on display in Las Vegas during their residency in 2019, very cool stuff. Great interview Jeremy and Mitch, Rock on!

Awesome interview. With Mutt as Producer Rick actually played/recorded High & Dry album on his drums.
Pyromania they used the Fairlight with Linn & Simmons drums. Rick only played the cymbals & HiHats.
Hysteria probably the same story as Pyromania.
The Black Beauty snare used on High & Dry, Pyromania & Hysteria. It was borrowed for the Metallica album Master of Puppets and is now owned by Jeff Rich formerly of Status Quo.

Really interesting to hear how they created the drum sounds, would never have thought it was lots of sounds of top of each other. Very very original and cool! Looking forward to the whole chat Jeremy, cheers! - R

Much respect to Rick, even tough I lost interest in Def Leppard after the second album. Saw those lads on their first American tour, opening a bill with Scorpions and Ted Nugent.
Great young band! They were really something special. Caught them again in 1983, Pyromania tour. They were not quite the fiery hard rock band by that time.

Well, the truth is it was all pre-recorded. According to Jim Steinman and Phil and Steve in Swedish interview (that is on TH-cam) Rick played very little on pyromania and nothing on hysteria, in part because undertandably he wasn’t ready yet after the accident and in addition Mutt’s flair for working the drum machine/pre recorded stuff and get it exactly as he wanted it. On High n dry Rick played it all, but by 85-86-87 things had changed Rick is still great and proved it on later albums and tours.

Seems to be the Mutt approach (at least for that era) considering Mickey Curry has said Waking Up the Neighbours is 99% Mutt's drum programming

I don't know on the hysteria b-sides sounds like Rick playing and the drums are very basic and unpolished so I think he was ready. the only reason I think mutt did all the drum programming for the album songs because he wanted the album to be perfect

He played, Mutt and Shipley replaced the snare, Tom’s, and kick with samples and used those samples and placed them into the song where they wanted them, and Rick recorded all of the cymbals. Allows for total control and versatility of the drum production. Allows them to do the “Star Wars” magic they were doing. Insane.
