    jib/genoa is the staysail, jibe is the maneuver that is similar to a tack, except with the wind in your back.
    (straight downwind isn't always the fastest course.)

    Thanks, enjoying this content. I smiled when you first considered two gaffs and a square, cuz that's the first thing I tried. In real life that would be a topsail gaff-rigged ketch. I was very pleased with my creation - until I took her out and discovered that it's impossible to balance the sails and that raised upper deck makes it hellishly unstable. Capsized twice in light airs before I decided it was time to try something else 😃

      Yea, I was concerned with how much heeling every one of my ship customizations would endure. They haven't yet been tested in stronger winds...

    Added a gaff to mainmast and that's it, and just set out from Aestrin to Emerald.. First time crossing great oceans in the cog, don't know how bad storms will be, but I guess I'll worry about that later.

    Historically cogs only had a square mainsail, maybe a mizzen with a lateen. I'd add a mizzen with a gaff and add one to the main as well. Provides a lot of flexibility.

    My favorite of the small ships. More of a medium ship really. So much space, lots of sail customization, and even mast customization. Can make it into a mini Sanbuq if you move the middle mast forward and go lateen sails.

      That would be my plan as well. More balanced in high winds and less ropes to run.

      I didn't find my experience with the Cog to be as cozy, managing crates is a fair bit harder which gives me the impression of having less room than I do in a Dhow or even a space-optimized Kakam as while the latter is really small, at least you still have a regular floor and you can put side by side two crates or barrels in more than just one thin slice of space. The Cog has potential to be very fast and it's the prettiest out of the smaller boats when it comes to sail customization, but it's not that comfortable for cargo.
      Anyways I also liked the caravel setup with lateens, sail management is much easier and you're better on a close haul. If you're better than me at this you could also try a full rig with a mizzen lateen, two squares on the mainmast, spritsail and jib (I don't remember if everything actually fits), at that point I'd be asking you why you're not buying the Brig but I'll admit it looks REAL good.

    the angle the sails are able to rotate not only depends on the sail type and size, but also on its vertical position and potential collisions with masts, hulls and cabins. The best you can get is 90degrees in either direction.

    You might try switching to a low roof - that gave me more room for sails. I use an 8yd gaff on my main, along with a 9yd trapezoidal. A 4yd gaff is on the mizzen - I hadn't thought about adding a square/trapezoidal to that mast. I've got a small jib up front, and a 2.5yd square on the forestay just for giggles. The mix of gaff and traps/squares gives you a lot of options for downwind and upwind sailing. I could be wrong, but I believe that a genoa is more useful for downwind sailing, while a jib is better for close hauled. Given that you have trapezoidal sails, I think the jib is probably the better choice on your boat. I'd use the genoa with lateen/junk/gaff sails to improve downwind performance.

    my first thought was...
    "That ship will tip over with all those sheets out."
    lol
    I had no idea we could even customize the ships... i'm going to buy that brig today tho. i want it.
    your finished product looks great tho. GG

    I would love to customize the Cog, the problem with Aestrin starts though is that once you get down to the Mountain it becomes very difficult to claw your way back in the default setup and make enough money to do anything worthwhile for customization. So might just have to do it on another save.

    I believe a jib is the sail and jibing is a maneuver. Both terms are correct, just 2 different things.

    You can add also a little square sail on the bow.. It can be very usefull for manuvers 😉

    2 gaff sails on the rear look great and might give you better maneuvering at low wind?

    I might be getting sailwind so I have a question. Are sailing trips and the game in general pausable? For example if you are sailing to an island but you had to go could you pause it so when you come back it is in the same place as it was.
    I love your videos!

    • @SimGamerTV
      @SimGamerTV  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you can save your game in the middle of the water and come back to resume the journey later.

      Yes, I expect that Sailwind is a permanent addition to my channel - at least I'll put together a series where a specific goal is set to be achieved.

    It’s a Jib. When turning and the wind passes behind you it’s a Jibe or Jibing as opposed to tacking.

    Personally out to make a twin masted gaff rigged schooner type rig with a little bowsprit squaresail, as big square riggers are lousy at going upwind.

      Ended up giving it a go, and I settled on what's known as a topsail schooner. Swapped the jib for a genoa, and replaced the sqaresail on the mainmast with a short 6 gaff and a trapezoidal 3 squaresail on top, then another short 6 gaff on the mizzen and a little 2.5 square on the bowsprit.
      All in all the closehauled sailing is much improved, though in a stiff blow you have to cut back sail a lot, sometimes down to just the genoa, otherwise you heel steeply and ship water like crazy.
      Would do better with a true schooner hull, but it suits me well enough.

    So why aren't you showing this game as it really plays? Time lagging bug that suddenly throws your ship into the air or puts you under the water?

    • @SimGamerTV
      @SimGamerTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mainly, because the game is still in Early Access, under active development, and all that is probably going to be fixed before full release.
