I have a GT-10 in my pedalboard rig and like it a lot. FX sound great, routing is fantastic, and Boss units are renown for gig-worthiness. No matter how good your unit sounds, if it fails you're screwed.
That said, I hate COSM modeling. I use my GT-10 strictly for FX and cab sims, and even so I'll be getting a Torpedo CAB for cab modeling soon as an upgrade. I have an analog preamp pedal that I route through the GT-10's loop for my preamp sounds.
I think the GT series makes a great "center hub" for controlling one's overall sound, but not so great as a stand-alone product. In my signal chain, I go straight from the guitar into the GT-10 and use its noise gate to keep the sound clean. From there I go out via the sent/return loop to my analog preamp pedal (Covington BMAC30-SS) back into the GT-10 for FX and cab emulation. Actually, I can place some FX before the preamp pedal (phaser, Uni-Vibe, wah, etc.) and some after (stereo delays, chorus, reverb), which the great routing of the GT-10 affords.
People with thousands and thousands to spend can buy separate boutique, hand-wired stomps for each effect in their chain, but for live work I think the GT's FX are more than sufficient for a great show. Also, they can all be tweaked differently for each patch and recalled instantly, which you can't do with real stomps. For the price of two designer stomps I can have dozens in one solid, roadworthy chassis.
The Zoom's preamp/cab sims has a bit more bite on the top end, which I like. If I were just starting out I would seriously consider the Zoom line. The stuff sounds very good and it's cheaper. But I don't know if it could take the punishment that Boss stuff seems to just shrug off. Same problem I have with Line 6--durability has been hit-or-miss over the years (although it seems they've beefed up their 500X in response to this complaint). The same cannot be said for Boss. Never had a Boss product go down, ever.

Zoom G3X wins.. no competition. That crisp and crunchy sound against boss' slightly compressed tone, shines like sun.

Thank you for video. Most of these tests on TH-cam are biased. This one is against the G3x. Everybody who owns both would know that. Why there is a fuzz effect engaged with a heavy noise gate on the high gain zoom clip? Here is my quick take on these two beasts
Gt10 pros: more effects, better global settings, better built. Cons: aliasing on high notes, less ergonomic, harsher amp emulations
G3x pros: price, battery powered, more ergonomics. Cons: built (cheap plexi glass), cheapo pedal control (wah, volume, the active movement less than an inch) only 6 effect including the amp sim

bladuck1 u are really true.....this one is against zoom....this person has not even described the patch effects, amp simulator used and parameters on either Gt10 or G3x to compare them both.....so without this we can never be able to compare anything between them...this is a completely biased video....maybe he has created different presets with different parameters and effects on both.....just to highlight the one

I thought the Boss sounded a bit better but the Zoom held up well for a lot less money. I hope someone here has noted that your playing was great & made the video all the more enjoyable. Thanks.

Zoom's dynamics and nuances are on another level. I have both of these but they're quite different, with Boss' superior looper and beef, but my G3(&X) are just endless in detailed sound potential! Wonderful pedals overall 🌛
An amazing time to be a guitarist.. experimental especially.
Caveat: only gripe is that you cannot switch between volume and wa in the same patch on the zoomers

The Zoom sounds a lot more ”analog” and natural, seems to favour playing dynamics more and seems to be more open across the range that the Boss, which seems kind of mid focused.

well, listening at this video, my ears, and people comments, the g3x sounds better, only in the hi gain part the gt 10 sounds better, still I think op didn't tweak the g3x enough in the hi-gain, I have listened good high distortion on this unit

I have a G3X. To me the GT10 is more close to real gear, but I prefer the sound of the G3X, its veeeery easy to customize the patches, the sound is more crispy and have much less noise, and this is awesome features for those who play with band. The crispy sound makes it easy to to cut through in a band enviroment, the high gain patches doesn't have those low frequencies that Boss does, but I don't care much about this on a live situation, let the bassist do the lows :)

With my computer speakers, the G3x had a richer clean sound. The Boss sounded good too and I could gig both and nobody in the audience would notice or care. My vote is for Zoom for the size, portability, loop, amp sim, drum machine, and DI.

I have my Boss gt 8 ( older one) and a Zoom g3 with no expression pedal, I tried them both thru the fx loop of my Soldano slo 100 watt head and 4x 12 soldano cab. I'm using of course the Soldano's pre amp section, so I am testing the boss and zoom as fx pedal boards only ( no amp modeling )
I find the Boss GT8 better, less noise and the effects are more convincing, and the amp seems to retain more of it's true tone with the boss effects. I do like the variety ofdifferent effects on the zoom- but the Boss unit seems to have more available functions at your feet. I think it's a case of you get what you pay for…the zoom G3 cost about 160.00 bucks, my Boss GT8 cost like 500.00 bucks or more. so go figure.

I have a zoom g9.2tt. I have owned many pedalboards before. It is REALLY difficult to compare different makes and models. First of all whoever wants to get good sounds, must STUDY at least some basics about sound. Generally presets are not good. You MUST know whta to modify, how to do it, and the amount of every little chage you do. Even you must consider the amp gain, volume, tone, as much as the pedalboard parameters. Little changes make great differences. I'm satisfied with my zoom. I can get whatever I want from it. If I had a Boss, or digitech or line 6, I should program them in differents ways. Every engine has its own secrets. It's difficult to find "bad" pedalboards nowadays, but really "bad" programmers.

To do a fair demo you have to adjust the eq on both units while playing and set the volume to the same levels. Otherwise it is useless.

Once in my life i had play on Boss multi effect, that was in early 90's, and i loved! That was off chance, when one guy from a band let me have it for a day or two, and i'd love it to a bit.
Now, more than 25 years later, i choose Zoom. Why?
    1. Zoom is cheaper (half price of Boss)
    2. Zoom is better built than Digitech, and any other multi pedals, if you can't afford Boss off course. It is Heavy Duty starting from GFX3 series, and all of them have metal case.
    3. About the sound? The most important!...
I had manage to download lots of patches on G3X, as setting them up manually is a nightmare. Am sure you can do this on Boss as well, but the clear cooperation of guitar/effect/computer (Cubase Element8-which is given with effect) / your amplifier / general output = very, very nice sound:)
Am into heavy metal stuff, like really heavy, and i noticed, 90% of Zoom (or any other pads on the market) won't suit me. But I'm so happy of this 10% i have been given!
    It is great!!!

The GT10 (and the 100) are both absolutely perfect at producing something sounding 100% 'Digital' AArgh. The Zoom on the other hand can truly fool me into believing I'm listening to something 'Real' - Not always; but at least sometimes. No contest. Well done China :)

I can't understand when people says that Zoom sounds more "natural", it's absolutelly crapy shit, mid-scooped sound that don't mixes right in a gig. I dont like digital effects too much, but Boss definitely sounds better, more dynamic sound and best attack response when playing. It's not just about brands... these guys really know what they are doing!

Having tried both, owning the zoom, the GT-10 is a pain in the ass to set a good sound fast and especially in high gain applications, that cocked wah sound gets on your nerves. The zoom is superior.
If you like the boss functionality, just put a g3 in its loop and get better modelling with boss effects etc, still it tone sucks a bit whereas the zoom doesn't (at least with the amps I have).

Hmm, I smell Boss bias. The settings for the Boss were much thicker with significantly more mid and bass than the Zoom. I tried the Zoom myself, it has the potential to sound quite a lot like the Boss you have here. Also my ears are telling me you used a humbucker for the Boss but for the Zoom you used a single coil guitar? Nothing's wrong with either, but the point of a comparison like this is to take two variables under the same factors/circumstances :)
    IMO!

I've always said it and I'll say it again, sound is subjective what's right for one is wrong for another. Both these products are great but aimed at two different guitarists and two different budgets. So which ones best? easy the one that's best for you, this vs that never works for me it just gets everyone arguing and trying to justify why one is better than another.

zoom is fine economic compromise, it sounds very overtonic and dynamic, especially w/gain - very acceptable for small/mid scene (club, cafe), good for combo ensemble, but boss cuts even a solid mix - it sounds noticeable solid and it`s space effects are more natural. It`s better to compare pedals at mix(backing tr)

The zoom can be set to sound much better than that. Plus the fact it's A HELL of a lot cheaper than the Boss. I personally don't give a shit about people saying the Boss is better for gigging. If you're a serious gigging musician, you wouldn't be bringing a digital multi FX unit in the first place. You'd be using analog stomp boxes. And if you do break your multi fx unit during a gig then you're an idiot. What do you use to press on the buttons? A jackhammer??? Give me a break lol.

just lower treble and maybe presence with your zoom, and there you have your "fuller". with the GT-10, however, you can't boost the highs, because they're not there to start with... or sound really nasty.

in this vid, u are using tele/strat with single coil pu right? direct recording? i dont know, but for guitar with single coil pu, boss gt 10 sounds thicker than the zoom g3x, both in clean and distortion.

Zoom G3 has better attack and presence but even more noise. Zoom G3x with a Boss DS-2 noise suppressor stompbox is the perfect equipement

The Boss got a more bright sound than the zoom, but the zoom is more cheap and have an awesome ways to transform the sound xd it all depends on what sound do you want, a more "crunch" or a more "bright" sound

Good comparison demo! Nice playing! ...and you selected a fair range of style to represent these different basic flavors.
I know this is not a contest and my opinion means little, however, I notice that the Boss sounds like it missing dynamics... too compressed. The Zoom seems more like a real amp in both tone and dynamics. It also seemed to have less noise.
Thank you! This is very helpful!

zoom sounded realy fuzzy to me in this video whereas boss was crisp clear. I dont know why people are liking zoom here. either my hearing should be different than normal or people should be basing their opinion on their real world experience with them and not how they sound on this video.

i don't understand something. on my very simple but effective digitech RP55 i can easily switch between 40 user made and 40 preinstalled presets just by holding on to one of two buttons. i don't see anything like this here. how many presets can these guys memorise?

I have 3 processors. I have a regular g3, me25 as well as a pod. To be honestly, I find zoom and pod to have a much less digital sound than the boss. The boss is only good for some sounds, but honestly it is a hype. Infact, it's very expensive. When It comes to my line 6, I think it's a little inconvenient to maneuver, besides, the pedal is a little tough in the sense it switches to another effect very easily. So using a wah wah is a challenge. But my little zoom, the cheapest is the best. I like the looper besides, it's all divided onto three different displays. So making patches is a Hundred times easier. Just an opinion for the buyers though, I think zoom is lovely.

+Leuken Hopper After listening to a ton of clips of everything from line 6 to boss to even audio fractal's ax8 and yamaha's thr10 and blackstar's id amps, the zoom g3x sounded the best to me for everything under $500. It's pretty crazy that it's also the cheapest. This video got me to pull the trigger on one today.

I own a few Zoom products and many Boss pedals.
Zoom beats Boss on multi FX units, but Boss SHINES in the single pedal category.
Sorry, but Boss is too overpriced for the digital sound you get.
Want a solid MFX unit? Can't go wrong with Zoom. Pedals? Don't waste your money on anything but a Boss pedal.

+UplinkDown Agree 100%! I have many single pedals from Boss that sounds fantastic, like the Blues Driver. But the MFX units sound emulation from Boss is very poor.

I agree with most of what you said but there are quite a few other pedal peddlers than Boss and Zoom. You know what's funny is I traded away my Behringer RV600 reverb and then bought a Boss RV6 for 3 times the price and now I want my damn $30 Behringer pedal back cos it was actually better. You can count on Boss to put out a good, solid quality pedal, but don't shut your mind off to anything else cos you'll be missing out!

I believe you are a strat lover judging by most vids i hear the same strat sound. are you using an american fender stratocaster? or something like that? if so, then i think zoom wins. because if you are using a strat and you love using a strat, because if you can hear the difference between the two, the high gain sound of the zoom expresses the 'stratty feel' of your fender strat. on the other hand, it is like comparing a gibson or PRS with a fender.
