It actually won an award in Spain for best special effects haha. To be fair, the effects on the Spawn costume were well ahead of its time and deserved the praise it received. Malebogia and "hell" on the other hand were complete trash and looked horrendous so its definitely a mixed bag.

I saw the Spawn movie in the theater around the same time I was reading the comic in either middle school or high school. The comic had been considered so good, but the movie was straight-to-video-tier schlock. Anyone going into it blind would have just thought that Spawn was the stupidest thing ever.
I'm glad Micheal Jai White bounced back as the star of the best parody movie of the the last twenty years with Black Dynamite.

Funnily enough Todd mcfarlen was at my sisters college graduation because he was receiving an honoring doctorate. He talked for two hours about how he created spawn and used the word spawn probably like 200 times.

The 90's was when good and great movies were still being made and almost every terrible studio movie holds up as so-bad-it's-good, mostly because of ridiculous technology and 90's cheese and melodrama. It also had genuine pre-9/11 lightheartedness. It was a different world. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was an age of gargoyles.

The first Spawn issue I read was #16, and I had to read several issues before I realized that Al Simmons was actually supposed to be black. With the scarring from his burns, I couldn't tell what color he was supposed to be.

I've never been able to forget how bad the effects in Spawn were. I specifically remember that in the grand finale there are supposed to be hundreds of other "Spawns" that are supposed to be the army Spawn agreed to lead and the camera scrolls past them and you can tell they're literally fucking digitized sprites with less animation frames than characters in Mortal Kombat 1. Shit looked straight out of a year one PS1 game.
That movie won best CGI of the year for the work on Spawn's cape. It was also one of the last movies in what I consider the era of "true fx", actual puppeteering and extreme makeup and so forth. Now they just render it. For days Spawn was in the suit, it had to be applied to some kind of latex gum and took 4 hours just to put on, so they'd put it on and work as long as they could, which would suck because imagine sitting for 4 hours doing that bullshit, then working a 40 hour day and you can't even stop by the bar for a break beer because you are wearing this latex bullshit which you can't even take off of yourself without the use of chemical solvents.
So the FX part is really cool for me because that sort of physical moviemaking (real movie making imo), is dead. The costumes and FX work (with the exception of a lot of the CGI) were awesome for 1997.
It was also supposed to feel like a comic, which inherently makes it over the top and cheesy as hell. But realizing that, you can see that it's intentional and it isn't as bad.
@Jozkg i just think it was a mistake to go back to the corny aspect of the franchise at a time when people were really seeing how dark he could be on screen with tim burton's films. Then Joel himself did a much darker take but still some elements of corny with Batman Returns. To do a complete 180 on the franchise and go all corny and puns and sillyness after Tim Burton specifically avoided copying the corny Adam West and Lewis WIlson versions which was the only other live action Batman at the time i think is what really hurt and essentially killed the franchise of Batman for so long until Chris Nolan dared to reinvent it again by going the serious tone again. Couple that with the animated series of Batman that went darker. I think it was all just about expectations and that is why the movie sucks for most people. If they went in thinking of a more adam west comedy I bet everyone would have been overjoyed with it. I just seems to be the overall consensus now that MOST people actually want the Dark Knight not the Bright Knight if ya catch me. The serious gritty tone is what sells the character for most and why he is at his most popular and most liked when he is portrayed in this manner.
Tangible effects will always be superior. I've noticed 90s cgi has kicked the movies of todays's asses as well (Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park for example). The only modern movie that comes to mind that had really good cgi to me was Riddick (the 3rd one)

I think the craziest thing with the CGI is that it was done by Steve Williams... the same guy who worked on The Abyss, The Mask, Terminator 2, and was the soul artist who built and animated the Rex in Jurassic Park.

fun fact Todd McFarland broke his arm as a junior jay at a baseball training camp, his roommate was a black guy named Al Simmons. When Todd needed to quit baseball and do some therapy he taught himself to draw. He created Spawn after becoming a rock star artiist on spiderman (venom was his creation) and used Al Simmons as the inspiration for the character and Terry Fitzgerald was the name of his colorist. Who became the best friend banging Wanda who was based on Todd's real wife.

I loved Spawn as a kid. Its still an OK watch every now and again.
The animated series is still solid. Just get a rip that doesn't have the intros, and enjoy Keith David doing his thing.

I worked as a studio projectionist and ran what was called a really early cut without music , some sound effects and incomplete SFX, well I saw the final cut and the only thing different was they cut some of the black boxes about the SFX and added music...this was a year after the 1st full print.

I watched Spawn when I was very young. I must have been under 10, so that would be more than 20 years ago, but I still remember some scenes vividly. That movie fucking scarred me. The CG was very good for the time. The practical effects were good too actually.

The CGI in Spawn in 1997 was incredible and so ahead of it's time. It's kind of silly to slam it when it pushed the envelope so much. Prior to it CGI was only small things being added into live action. In Spawn there's entire environments and the elaborate suit etc. Nothing had been done like that before outside of classical animation or rotoscoped Baski type things.
The biggest irony is that Nick doesn't recognize that he fell victim to the first wave of woke marketing by consuming Spawn instead of X-men (the appropriate supremacist liturgy).

I saw this shortly after release and remember thinking that it had the best sfx I had ever seen. His cape movement in particular. It was weird to see movies like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy so many years later, in which the special effects looked so much more blatantly fake. It just goes to show that it's not just about the tech that is available at the time; it's how it's used that is important.
