I visited Kerala in July and It is the most beautiful state of India. My brother is went there to celebrate Onam with his friend's family, they invited him. Our family is blessed that we've seen Gods own country (Kerala).

@Sandiago Martin whenever people thinks about tourist place in South India, their first preference is Kerala. That's not their fault if they talk about Tamil or Telegu movies because mostly Tamil and Telugu movies are dubbed in Hindi. Chennai, Hyderabad always there in those movies. I know Mohan Lal from Malayali cinema. I watched his films which is dubbed in hindi. Recently I watched his movie where he killed tiger at the end of the movie but I fogot the movie name and I also watched his Lucifer trailer.

Kerala because of its floating population of today around the world and in other states of India
have added many festivals to its own. It also borders Karnataka and Tamilnadu. Kerala was having connections with most other countries for centuries from China to entire Europe. It has very large Muslim and Christian population equalling Hindus, plus all other religions . Hence it is not fun if we say we have more than one festival, on one specific day,as festivals are based on many types of calendars ! Names may differ but the basics same.Assam's Bihu, is Kerala's VISHU, for example!

Onam is actually a harvest festival celebrated mainly in kerala. It goes on for 10 days in the month of 'chingam' (according to Malayalam calendar) which falls in the months of august -september.People make those beautiful floral carpets (that you saw in the video) on all the 10 days. People also make these giant feasts during onam and invite their relatives and friends to their house to celebrate it. People buy new dress (called as onakkodi) which is usually the traditional attire.

Every region & every state has their own regional festivals which locals celebrate but they are also celebrated across the country. So it’s a criss cross of cultures and festivities.
Some festivals are reginal but are celebrated all over simply because of their fun quotent.
Holi festival of colours and diwali festival of lights are like hindu global festival.
Ganesh chaturthi is country wide but most popular in north and west and even more popularly and lavishly celebrated in mumbai.
Similarly Durga puja is majorly celebrated in northen, eastern and central regions but in west bengal and gurjat it is widely celebrated.
We indian don even shy away to celebrate christmas, holloween, ramadan etc
It’s an open culture nothing is restricted nothing is sin here except that everyone should have morals not to harm or exploite any living or even non living things because basically the idea/phylosophy is that everything comes from one source and everything is an essence of that one source & everything is interdependent just like our eco system. And the law of cause and effect i.e karma is deeply engraved in our culture .. what you sow shall you reap. The paths and ideas can be many and different.
That’s Sanatan Dharma (original name for hinduisms)
One fun fact.. there is not a single hindu festival/event that is about sorrow or repent unlike abrahamic festivals (death of jesus or muhamud etc) but we respect the sacrifices.
Bcoz the idea is everything is cyclic and everything is maya (divine play or leela)
I live in mumbai, maharashtra so i love ganapati but i also goto celebrate onam (basically onam food) at my kerelite friends place, and since I’was born in north I celeb baisakhi with my punjabi friends too.
    Happy Onam to all. 😁🙏🏻
PS: Please like and comment if the public wants this sweet family to react on some videos explainig hindu philosophy & i shall share a video or two.
    Pheww 😅

Festivals of colour is not the official name of Holi or translation. It's just easy for foreigners to understand it that way. So just cuz they used this term to define this festival doesn't mean they were refering to Holi.
Many States celebrate festivals which are famous in their region. Onam being Kerala's important festival.

Hinduism is the very complex and diverse and sometimes it is not easy to comprehend. Colours is used in almost every hindu festival but in a different way...like colors is used in Ganesha chaturthi and Durga puja during idol immersion time and in Onam people used colors to make Rangoli or floral pattern but in Holi people play with colors whole day....so Holi is originally the festivals of colors . In Hinduism colors are seen as symbol of liveliness and diversity.

Holi (Holy not Holly lol) celebrates spring, hence the colors the water etc. Oman is the celebration of fall Harvest (hence the festival of colors different from holi) and it also celebrates the home coming of King Mahabali. A flower design is made in front of the door or house to welcome guest/God/King Mahabali. In November we will celebrate Diwali, the homecoming of Lord Ram (the festival of lights).

      Pretty neat explanation.
      The King's name is Mahabali*.
Also, the flower design is not called Rangoli(There's no particular name, infact, for the flower decoration). Rangoli is done with coloured "flour" and is a daily and tradition in some households in TamilNadu, Karnataka and may be even in Andhra/Telengana.

Holi is a spring festival celebrated largely in North India. Onam is a harvest festival celebrated in the South Indian state of Kerala and is referred to as the festival of colours because of the colourful floral decorations and the brightly coloured costumes worn as a part of the celebration. Onam is completely unrelated to Holi. Both festivals are visually stunning and vibrant in very different ways!

Hi Geeks Team, thanks for your interest to play these videos. Appreciate your effort to show this to your audience. I would like to mention the difference of 'colours' they meant for Onam, and that you suspected regarding to 'Holy'. Holy is with colors of powders during when different floral designs of colorful powders are used, where as Onam is also full of colors due to the presence of different colorful "FLOWERS", different colourful DRESSES we wear as a Onam typical attire, and different colourful FOODs (Onam Sadhya) we together have with family ,cousins and friends on this particular auspicious day as a customary function. With different types of colourful flowers, every courtyards of houses are decorated with floral carpets( special designs made up with colorful flowers) during 10 days before we welcome our ancient King Mahabali on the very important day of Onam, which is also considered as our main harvest festival, that is, the beginning of next season for agriculture after the harvest of last season... hope you got the difference of usage of 'colours' physically, as well as logically with respect to the joy of minds..Also, Holy is mainly celebrated in North and Central parts of India, whereas Onam is celebrated in Kerala, a southern state of India region wise, also by all Kerala people across globe wherever they are and wish to enjoy this. India has many such marvelous cultures and celebrations... Hearty welcome to India !

The festival's differ from state to state. And more so from north to south. Most people in South have Vishnu as their main deity. Whereas in North it'll be shiva. This in itself brings about different celebrations and different mythological explainations

    Holi and Onam are different.
Onam is celebrated only in the South. And it is not the festival of colours. They use the colours to make Rangolis but they don't play with it.
Holi is the main festival of colours. And Holi is celebrated in all of India.

ok guys.. Indians have many festivals, more than u can get. There is not always a specific date as here we have our own calendar which decides dates accordingly. again to understand this its complicated cause its based on stars and other factors (since we r the oldest cultural civilisation). every major festival date back centuries older than christianity and christian calendar so worshipping nature, colours, cuisines is the essence. how u do it is different in different state according to its regional history and culture.

Please, Holi (Holy) is celbrated mainly in Northern India where they speak Hindi. Onam is a festival in South Indian state Kerala where they speak Malayalam. These two are entirely different festivals. One country, different states, many languages, many religions.
