Good morning world! Here I'm sitting at my kitchen table in Germany at 8:34 in the morning, enjoying my Saturday morning coffee and watching a tour through beautiful yarn shops in America that I will never visit in person. What a nice way to start the day. 😊

Same here :) Some more greetings from Germany. Now it is Saturday afternoon and I´m sitting here knitting and looking at yarn shops in Ohio. And I kinda wish to have some lys with so much of a community element to them here too.

17 shops is quite the yarn safari. I love yarn and notions and unique gift items but I really enjoy viewing the seating areas that shops offer their patrons. I like to imagine myself there hanging out with other makers and enjoying the atmosphere. (I would have liked to see the cats playing with their catnip balls. 😺)

I loved seeing all of these shops. It's nice to see all the different vibes in the stores, yarn options, notions, etc. I would love to visit the shop with all of the natural yarn. The samples on that store blew me away. I live in the Chicago area and there is a yarn crawl here. I have only gone a couple of times to a handful of stores, but this video has inspires me to visit more shops next year.

Thanks so much for taking the time to make and share this video. I was very excited to see the Bared Naked Yarns shop. I am from NJ and will be attending Rhinebeck (Sun only) and my main goal is to see the Bare Naked Yarns booth. I have a specific sweater in mind which I believe that their yarn would be perfect for. Seeing their brick and mortar shop with all the beautiful yarns just heightened my excitement. Thanks again for another wonderful video.

Mark, you did a great job showcasing all of the wonderful local yarn shops! I'm not sure how you managed to film while they were completely empty but it was great.
When I discovered Holst Garn, I bought every pink and purple possible. It's great for colorwork and what I used for my one and only published pattern. It's finer than Jameison's and J&S so I have to go down a needle size but it creates beautiful colorwork and softens after blocking.

I looove color but boy, there is something so soothing about the Bare Naked Wools store! It’s just like a deep breath of relaxation for the eyes! ❤ Thank you for the wonderful tours!

Wowza! 17 yarn shops and really different vibes. As much as I love color, the most memorable shop was Bare Naked Wools. Undyed fibers are so beautiful and that shop had visual impact and the samples that contained ever so slight bits of muted colors...beautiful. Thank you so very much for MORE great tours!
BTW Mark, I purchased one of my most treasured notions (the Tulip magnetic tapestry needle keeper) after watching one of your videos. It is a tidy little lifesaver. I use it daily. Again, thank you for all the great info!

We just finished the Great Tennessee Yarn Tour, it had shops from Knoxville, to almost Nashville, and of course Chattanooga. There were 18 shops involved. I can honestly say that out of the hundreds of people who were in the crawl, only one was a Debbie Downer. Each shop had their own hand dyed mini skeins, the tour guide book had patterns for the mini skeins.
Currently is the North Alabama yarn crawl, not nearly as big, but, considering where we are located, it's good to be involved

Loved looking at all of your yarn crawl stores. We have a yarn crawl here in The Pacific Northwest. Ours is usually in the spring and it covers about 12 shops. Some have a dyer the with their special yarn. Others have patterns and the yarn to make these special crawl patterns. Each year the store run a theme around the crawl. I’ve done the crawl a few times. I recently did the Rose City Yarn Crawl last spring and had a great time. Thanks for the tour!

Mark, Mark, Mark! I want to make a special trip just for this yarn crawl! Okay, oh my goodness! Now, just finishing the video. I am just south of Portland, Oregon and we used to have numerous shops in our Yarn Crawl. Unfortunately, between the internet and Covid many, many of our yarn shops have closed! As far as picking a favorite store on your tour . . .how would someone do that! All the stores were gorgeous! And after watching all the way to the end . . .just like you said, each shop is so special! The company I work for is in Ohio, and I will be calling my boss on Monday saying, I need to come to Ohio! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful yarn tour!

Hello Mark, it's Saturday afternoon here in the UK. I very much enjoyed your yarn shop tour and I'm quite envious of all those beautiful stores, especially those with big tables for crafters to come and sit at. I have only one tiny yarn shop local to me and much as I love it and try to visit and buy there when possible, its stock is limited and I do a fair amount of yarn buying online. I loved seeing all your purchases too, I have some Emma Ball notions myself and use her little tins for keeping them in. Thanks for taking the time to film and share.

If you are in the Dallas/Ft Worth area in late April - early May, we will be having our 14th annual North Texas Yarn Crawl. There are usually at least a dozen local yarn shops participating each year. Some are really spread out through the region, so the Dallas Hand Knitters Guild will charter a bus to tour some of the outlying shops. Having retired since the last yarn crawl, I’m looking forward to having the time to check out the locations outside of the immediate DFW Metroplex.

Watching this in my little country The Netherlands, I wonder what is local to you? Since the state of Ohio is about 3 times the size of my whole country 🤭. I really enjoyed watching all the different stores. And totally understand your preferred to watch for notions, after all the yarn shopping you did during your trip to the UK. I prefer to buy my yarn in LYS, to support them and to feel the yarn before I buy it. Thank you for another nice video!

I love Holst! I buy it directly from Holst Garn online and get it very quickly. They also typically have several colors on sale on a rotating basis, and sell 500 gram cones as well as the little cakes. They have a few different fibers, but only sell fingering weight, so perfect for knitted sweaters. I also purchased shade cards so I know the colors I am choosing. The character of the yarn changes COMPLETELY after washing or blocking. A lot of the spinning oils are still in the yarn and come out during the final process. I'm really interested in what you think of the final fabric.

Going with the train theme on one of your stops, if you haven't been down my way in Louisville Kentucky there is a quaint little town called LaGrange, the yarn shop is on Main street (Friends and Fiber). There are working train tracks going through Main street, if you visit there you will see a train go by. It's a small street so traffic has to stop when they come through. Thank you for this fun video.

Regarding your question about yarn crawls in different regions: I live in Germany now but I'm from the Pacific Northwest, and there is a yarn crawl there (PNW Yarn Crawl) that features the yarn shop from my hometown, Ewe and I, in Chehalis Washington. Ewe and I is one of my favorite yarn shops I've been to in the world. Not only are they really friendly and inviting there, there is also in in-store café that serves amazing food, and the vibes are just so cozy. Highly recommend it if you're ever in the area!

Oh my gosh I didn't realize you were in my area. I haven't done YDT in quite some time, maybe 9 or 10 years now? But I still have yarn from the last few times I did it. 😂 It is fun to see some old favorites and check out some shops I'm not so familiar with these days. Around the Table is close to work but I struggle with anything near that one intersection in Shaker so I typically avoid Shaker altogether. I'll have to have Google map me out how to avoid it lol. I'll have to swing through Canton next time I'm at my dad's. And I never got into dance moms but anyone who says they don't love some version of trash tv is a liar lol.

I'm in Minneapolis and every spring we have a Shop Hop with about 12 shops. I haven't been yet but plan on it next year.
Also, in August we had a PEEP progressive east end project. That included 7 shops, you buy a hank at each and get a mystery pattern at the end. Now also something I need to do next year.
But wait! We also just our knitting guild annual retreat with a public marketplace with over 20 vendors. A mini ship hop!
I feel spoiled with so many local options.

Mark, thanks for tour, loved it. How did you manage to film without another customer in shop 😂???

I live in the Texas Panhandle and there are no yarn crawls within driving distance. We only sometimes have a LYS in Amarillo and that is not very close to me. The shops you showed were beautiful.

Enjoyed joining you on this tour. Thanks. I guess they gave you early in or late out privileges to film since there were no people in the shops in your video? I love the community aspects of the shops where they have tables and gathering ares. Also intrigued by the shop that includes weaving.

in the greater san francisco bay area/sacramento area (and can include satellite regions as well), we have a fair number of yarn shops! There's at least two? regional yarn crawls as well, too :) I might check out at least part of the bay area one next year.

To be quite honest, I was a little unsure I wanted to watch this video. A very strange statement would you say? I only say that with a bit of envy, jealousy and sadness. I am from born and raised in Cleveland, and even though I have crocheted my whole entire life, I’ve never been to a local yarn store; fast forward years and years later I have settled in Jacksonville Florida, where there are absolutely no local yarn shops. 😢 so knowing that my home state, and area is a host to so many yarn shops is so exciting to me, but also sad that I am not able to visit any of them right now. But maybe on my next trip home some of these shops will be included in my plans.
Thank you Mark for another wonderful video❤

This was really interesting to watch. I love how you have access to so many wonderful unique yarn shops. Also a little bit jealous, as the part of the UK I live in has no local yarn shops, and only one chain store which has a very small amount of yarn in! Also - what pattern is the jumper with the leaf pattern on the neckline? It's gorgeous and I might need to learn how to knit well just to make it!!

Pittsburgh, PA has Steel Valley Yarn Crawl with the same sort of passport system. In 2025, it'll run August 1-10.

Hi Mark: Thanks so much taking us with you on your local yarn crawl. I never been to a yarn crawl. I don’t drive nor have friends that knit. So I love to go a yarn store. When I get to go, it is a real treat!
I like Bare Naked Wool because I am looking for non-super washed yarn. I knitted too many sweaters that has the stretch factor ruining my knitting efforts.
I also love Around the Table Yarn because there’s tables and always teaching person on staff to help out for free. I had the bad experience in my now closed small local yarn shop that charge for help, despite I have made repeated yarn purchases. They did not want to help when I was stuck on a pattern when I was relatively new to knitting. After that incident, I did not choose to buy yarn from them ever again.
Are you going to Rhinebeck this year? It is two hours away from me. I’ve always wanted to go but don’t drive and getting there via public transportation is cumbersome. Additionally, I had some dental problems that did not allow me to even think about finding a way to go unfortunately.
Thanks for sharing all those lovely shops! Happy knitting!❤

I loved seeing the different yarn stores. However, I feel a bit uneasy with the consumerism of such yarn tours...
