    I am 55 & preparing to move overseas…I know what works for us & have a strong motivator to unload what doesn’t so here are my 3 best tips: 1) Gifts: if it isn’t something I can use immediately, I express gratitude but dont even fully unbox it. I have a gift section of my hall closet where I store these. I list them for sale & if they don’t move, re-gift them as soon as appropriate. 2) My closets/home: I have a yoga/sewing room with a closet, IKEA cube bookshelf & hanging rack. Everything intended to go for the last 2 yrs as I declutter has been moved into this space & listed for sale. Out of hundreds of items (~$1K/mo) I’ve retrieved abt 6 that I decided I needed to hold onto. What doesnt move within 6-8 mos gets donated. 3) Office & keepsakes: we each spent ~ 1 mo digitizing & backing up everything we deemed worthy of retaining & shredding/tossing the rest. This is 2 full lives & careers worth of files, cards, journals, photos, etc. The paperwork was BY FAR the worst of it!

    This is hitting me at just the right time. I've been decluttering my desk. Some of the drawers haven't been decluttered in years. There are 5 drawers and I've managed to declutter three and a half so far. Unfortunately, because some of the stuff I've found tucked away is sentimental or just oddball things, these Items are now unhomed and sitting in a "doom box" on my dining room table. It's kind of overwhelming. Instead of letting them sit in this box for the unforeseen future, I think I will try interacting with it every day and make a decision on only one or two items per day until all the items have new homes. It might take a while, but eventually, everything will be dealt with, and no more doom box. Thank you for this!

    Yes, so true - interact with the itchy sweater and remember that you always need to tug at it, or... discover that you lost a few pounds and that topnk is perfect now. Give it a chance to reveal how useful each questionable item is currently. Great advice, thank you.

      Currently doing this with my closet challenge. I’ve already decluttered several items just by forcing myself to wear them. Those shorts that look cute but feel weird? Gone. The jeans I keep having to pull up? Gone. Interaction is the KEY.

      Yeah! Finally good advice! If you put something in box it is out of sight out of mind. If you put in a box to see if you might go get them if you need them, you might as well donate it right away because you will forget about them. If you put it front and center and force yourself to use it, you will will realize if you really want it or not.

    I have tried putting stuff in a box and labeling it with today's date. Then if it still sits unopened after a year, I should get rid of it. Then I thought about taking everything out and displaying them on tables and shelves. The two issues with that are space and making your home look cluttered. I don't have enough places to put all this stuff. It was working just fine when it was stashed away in a box in the closet. And what I did take out of boxes just made the room look like a piñata exploded. But maybe that is another key to the exercise. People say everything should have a place. This made me realize that I just have too much stuff. I'm glad you made the video.

Thanks for the inspiration of just getting rid of that stuff in the first place.

    That is very good advice! And much more realistic for how the sequence of actions is for most people, I think.
    Besides things appearing new and exiting, I think a lot of people will also feel the need to go through that put-away box again, so now they have to make decluttering decisions about the same things again, and then they put the box away, and take it out and make decluttering decisions again. Exhausting.

    Putting it out and try using it is bang on. When my mother passed, I came home with all kinds of things that were hers. Yes, it has taken some time but I have been letting go of most of those things. I have used them or looked at them enough that I do need them in my memory box or house. The kids have what they wanted and I am not the guardian of family items.

    That makes so much sense. I can relate to every situation you used to illustrate things. Running across an old item in a box and deciding it’s precious for a while. Having some things out so that I can relate to it now. Having some things I’m not sure about, and what to do about it (try using it!)
    Something I’ve started noticing is that minimizing should be called regularly confronting your items.

    The only thing I have ever boxed up was all of my kitchen utensils. I moved into a house with limited storage and my kitchen drawer space shrunk immensely. I put everything in a box on top of my fridge. When I needed something, I would pull it out of the box, use it and put it in the drawer. One day I realized I had not gone to the box for at least a month. I took one last look and decided the rest could go. I also allowed myself one storage tote with clothes 1 size down from what I am wearing now. Since I only had the one tote, I had to make sure I really liked the clothing item. The rest went to the local donations center. The seasonal clothes I’m wearing now were hung in my closet using the backwards hanger trick. I took a look at the clothes still on the backwards hangers just yesterday and took out what I hadn’t worn yet as I know they will not be worn. One other thing I box up is my home decor…I have a spring/summer collection and a fall/winter selection. My win on this is that I can keep more of my home decor and rotate it throughout the year.😊 My house does not look cluttered with ALL my decor out at one time.

    I actually DID come across similar advice from another TH-camr, but was only related to clothing. The advice was encouraging you to interact with the clothing item, put it on and make your decision to keep/donate based on the interaction. I like how you take it a step further to do it with more than just clothing. This definitely helps with the items we're unsure about

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Even for clothing I’ve found that just putting it on has never worked. I have so many items I’ve tried on, thought they looked fine, and put them back in the closet. And yet I still never wore them. Now I’m forcing myself to wear each item for a day. That’s giving me a MUCH more realistic viewpoint. For instance, a pair of shorts that I thought looked cute when I tried them on… When I had to wear them around all day I quickly changed my mind. 😂

    I think boxed storage works if the contents are categorised with when they are going to be used and what for. I have clothes which are currently not the style or colour palette I'm wearing, but they are my taste and I'm likely to wear them again in the next few years so I keep them. I have household stuff for specific occasional activities and events, I have things that don't 'spark joy' but they fulfill a need adequately, some duplicates for things I use often or ready for when the original wears out. I sometimes swop out cushions curtains and decorative items in my living room in spring and autumn, boxing up the old season. It kept things feeling fresh without redecorating or buying new

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree. That’s more of a storage thing though. I’m more-so talking about situations where I’m considering getting rid of something and thinking that stashing it in a box will help me make a decision.

  • @shannaandersonzongo8128
    @shannaandersonzongo8128 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    This is really relatable advice for me. The 6 month box becomes a sentimental box and then not only do the items feel more special, it feels like I have to “declutter” the same stuff twice! Which usually turns into many more than two times as a periodically stumble back into those boxes and resort them and maybe skim out a few things to donate and mostly just put it all away again.
    Even though I find getting rid of stuff hard, it’s easier to do it right away like all the extra clothes in my closet that I’m always shoving passed to get to the few things I wear. If I take them out and donate them right now it gives me the reward of more space in my closet and easier access to what I use.

  • @ewanwild
    @ewanwild 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I can see how this new advice will help others, but I actually do fine with the old advice. I have gone through boxes full of items that I wasn't ready to let go of over the past few years and so I set them aside. I return to them once a year or so and each time I get more and more. The largest group of the items, and the most emotionally challenging category, was books. I boxed up ten boxes and left them in a specific spot. Then, I looked up the next closest book sale at the local library. I promised myself if I would donate all the books I hadn't taken out of the boxes before that sale. I finally did it! 10 boxes of books I had been carrying around across five states. All because I didn't go searching for any of them during my set "trial period" - and I haven't regretted it yet. I think part of the reason your new advice would be less effective for me is that I am very good at stepping over the towel on the floor (or in other words ignoring something until I actually fall on my face), therefore the items would essential be "out of sight" as I ignore their existence anyway.

    This is making sense to me. I have one of those "out of sight out of mind" butterfly brains, especially with craft supplies. I pulled out yarn and needles that I wanted to declutter in May, and put them in a bag in my living room. I knit for a few weeks, and can safely say I am ready to donate most of the bag. Am having difficulty decluttering oil paint (love the open time, hate the clean-up) and have put it, again, in a place where I have to see it on a regular basis. Will try it again, and then make a decision in a few months whether I want to keep it or not. Clothing is not my weak spot, as I buy from thrift shops (less sunk-cost fallacy,) and have the room...but very much aware that I am keeping pieces because they are just beautiful to look at. I think being conscious of what you have plus time leads to making clear decisions about letting go, if you have that luxury. Thanks again for another great video!

      I always have the mindset of _"out of sight, out of mind"_ which is how I end up with 3 thermometers, dozens of pants and tops that sit in the closet that is never opened. This probably contributes to the habit that breaks my heart, which is wasting food. I put these lovely items properly in cabinets and the fridge, only to _"forget"_ about them, and favor the *junk food* instead. I'm so aware of all my habits, and am trying to figure out how to address them.

    I also find putting stuff in boxes doesn't always work if you have forgotten where you have put it. I find that I usually forget where I've put something, or think that I am going to use it someday and then it becomes an encumbrance. I threw out a bunch of cheap art supplies today, and some old ones that I've had lying around for about a decade because they were packed away in boxes that had dried up. A year or so ago, I would have felt guilty for doing it but I didn't like using them because (for example, coloured pencils always breaking when I sharpened them, etc...) and now I feel liberated because I got rid of those things which I didn't like much. We are moving, so decluttering for that has helped me a bit but I don't feel like I have been wasteful for getting rid of them - I would have done previously, but the real waste comes from the manufacturers for making cheap stuff that don't work very well and people buy them and are disappointed by them.

I ALWAYS experience new found reasons I "should" keep or save said item(s) once I open the lid...haha. I am so much more careful of bringing only things into my home that I know I will use. Will definitely try your method of "awareness" to help me weed through my unnecessary things I have struggled to let go of.

    With graphic tees that you still like but might not fit anymore or you don’t wear anymore, if you’re crafty, you could cut out the graphic part to make a quilt with them, turn one into a throw pillow, or cut out the graphic and put it into an embroidery hoop to hang on the wall.
    You could also make a quilt or pillow out of other clothing materials that you like but donKt wear anymore.

    Def I learned to just give things a “test rerun” (or admittedly sometimes a first run-I bought things that just sat there for months or years and once I gave them a run, I wound up getting rid of most of it) and I find that either I do still love it or it just doesn’t work for me. I think it’s really just about tackling decision making. I think the other way is just more like “sneaky” procrastination. A lot of mine was cleaning gadgets or pet things. I think for me it was so often about not wanting to tackle the instructions for it. So I soon learned that I don’t like complicated gadgets so much. Lol. I’d rather just use a broom or something very simple like that Bcuz I don’t have to figure out how to use it. Lol. I also keep a chatzkie cabinet for many of the things I love to have and see. It’s on display behind the glass every single day and I enjoy it. I still have a few things like that I def need to tackle (mostly tech stuff tho and I just hate learning new tech also lol).

    I'm so glad you made this video! I'm a professional organizer and I use this strategy with my clients all the time. Sometimes, they don't even have to go as far as actually using it, just having me suggest they use it is enough. When I start asking practical questions about where exactly we could hang a piece of art of the wall, when will they be able to work on this old hobby next, which event could they wear this outfit to - that's enough for them to see that they don't actually want something in their lives, because they can see that future more clearly and it isn't appealing. When things are tucked away in boxes they have so much potential, and potential is hard to let go of.

    This is what Michelle Ogundehin says too. I think it depends on whether you're decluttering for yourself (use this method) or who you're decluttering with (eg if a child agrees to part with some toys but they can come and ask you if they're looking for something specific, or like me earlier this week when I put aside some overflowing kitchen implements to see whether my husband looks for anything specific or says there aren't enough because if I show him the utensils we've never used he will become attached or feel like it's wasteful to get rid of it)

    I watch many of the decluttering videos, but often think on this point of " boxing things and putting them away for a time and going back at a later date to see if you even missed or needed any of it" as a catch 22. If you had room to store a box or two away for 6 mos or a year, that would be a luxury to me. The whole idea of decluttering is to edit your " stuff" and get rid of it ( donate, sell, toss, etc.) Many don't have a garage or attic or extra storage place to begin with. I know I sure don't. If I kept a box of items and went back to it in 6 mos or a year, I'd be startung all over again ( time wasted?) & might be tempted to hang on to much of it. Counter productive? I am saying this as a procrastinator of decluttering, so take it with a grain of salt! 😂

    Clothes I still struggle with but part of it is the extreme temps in my region causing need for a wide variety to avoid heat stroke and frost bite.... And the sweaters I “hate” are always the warmest at 40 below.

    I like both methods it depends on itemsfor me it's clothes and beauty products. I love my clothes and will wear them even though I've lost multiple sizes (not by choice) and they don't fit like they used to if they're out of sight they're out of my mind and I won't feel guilty and am more likely to let them go same with beauty products as I see it as a waste. Where as things like cards sentimental trinkets and gifts really makes me think is it sentimental or is it just the fact that person gave it to me and I'm feeling guilty letting It Go. (Old school reports and work mum kept for me, gone, childhood memorabilia minimised). Physical photos will I display it ?!? Digitalisation and throw out.

    The best advice! Thank you! I recently lost several loved ones and inherited a significant number of their belongings. It was really (REALLY) difficult for me to balance the desire to honor those individuals and to still maintain some feeling of myself amid the tragedy. Because of emotional overwhelm, I kept an alarminging number of items (even things that were outdated or not "my style") because, "who knows what my kids might want"? Right? Well, due to the "lucky" circumstance of very little, inside, hidden, storage space, ANNNND the outdoor storage temperature, this past summer, that could melt even plastics, I ended up stacking most everything on the desk of my home office space.
    Eventually (of course), it hit critical mass; I couldn't't get work done in that space. The only efficacious way to continue being an even pseudo-functional human was to either: use or to get rid of the sentimental items in my workspace.
    This conundrum had a few surprising benefits, (that Laura, wisely, had already noted). One: some items that I had written off as being purely "sentimental" ended up being incorporated into the fabric of my daily life (which left me feeling much more contentedly connected to my lost loved one than having something sadly "sacred" in a box could ever do). Two: I learned to be more open-minded to things that I might have a preconcieved notions about (bad and good). Some things I thought would be amazing, didn't really work for me. And some things I'd written of as "not me" grew on me. Three: living with a particular item day-in & day-out, gave me the confidence to let go of things that simply didn't serve me. And helped to remind myself that holding on to the thing (that doesn't impact my life in a positive way) is not honoring my loved one. But, that by donating it, I am offering potential satisfaction to someone who appreciates that thing more than I could. And, thus, honoring my loved one's legacy more than keeping something in a box in my closet ever could.

      Who said anything about putting it somewhere you’ll trip over it? 🤷

    Hm. The original method works perfectly for me! I've had things that I could never throw away because seeing them constantly renewed my emotional connection to them. Once I put them away, the connection losened more and more and I finally could part from them. They were not "special" or "limited edition" for me, just not interesting anymore, like random stuff.

      Works for me, too. I get a chance to miss it or not. However, I only box it for about a month and I don't put a lid on it, because the lid makes it feel like a present or discovery. I just use a cardboard box.
