  • I talk about how to take your wrangler from 14 to 20 MPG, we talk about tire size and gearing and what the true cause of poor mpg really is on your off road vehicle. same applies to really any vehicle, any Toyota, jeep, ram, Chevy, Ford or whatever.

100% Agree with you. Im looking at buying my first Jeep. A 2011 jk 3.6l 4dr. I know nothing about jeeps perse but this is going to be my rual postal vehicle due to it being a factory right hand drive. Seems to be in very good shape, everything works nothing leaks. It's had the motor replaced in it already with the second motor already at 120k on it. 250k on the clock as it stands. No squeaks moans or groans. Seems very solid & i too don't care what people think about it as for the ascetics. I want it as reliable and fuel efficient as possible. I don't believe the vehicle has been abused off road or even been taken off road on a regular basis. A asphalt queen most likely. I will be taking it on rual dirt road with stock 19" wheels & tires & suspension. Shouldn't be a problem as the roads around here are pretty well maintained buy the grading crews. Owner has told me he has upgraded the shocks from the stock ones. Any Advice?

I can tell you, even a stock wrangler can handle even the toughest off road obstacles. If you want the best mpg, I'd probably get all the fluids changed out and a tune up, other than that, make sure your tires are properly inflated. I run close to max psi on the road, unfortunately jeep wranglers being shaped like a brick aren't the most fuel efficient way of transportation but if you're entering the wrangler world for the first time, it's a very big culture. Every wrangler driver waves at the other, look up what the jeep wave is, it dates back to WW2, and don't be too surprised if you randomly come out to your wrangler and see a rubber ducky sitting on it lol. That's a thing too. The good thing is, there's an abundance of stock wrangler parts on the market so parts are cheap. I hope it serves you well!

Jeep builds of any level, aren't generally a "need" for anyone, neither is fuel economy. I've got better things to do with my day than to swap shoes. Running Padagonia's at max psi though?, you'll get really good at changing tires.

I was a mechanic for quite awhile, There is no magic cure for mpg, some people complain about mpg, some don't. If you want more, inflate your tires, simple formula. You are correct, jeep builds aren't a need but as I said, there are things you can do to help your mpg if it's a concern. Going on a cross country trip? I've done that several times in mine and yea I run max psi or close to it until I get to a trail. I'll air down, and when I'm done, air back up. Even if you don't have a fancy ARB or Vair, you can get a 12 volt tire pump, may just take awhile. Nobody cares whether you run down the highway at 44 psi or 20, only your wallet cares. I've had my Patagonias now for about 2 years and I swap them on and off depending on my needs because at the end of the day, you're the only one that is going to care about your jeep. If you want to wear out the M/Ts by driving them down the interstate then go for it. I'll swap depending on what I'm doing, only takes 15 minutes anyway and saves me quite a bit of money.

What else is a better use of your time? Watching TH-cam videos on how to get better MPG in your jeep? Or actually doing something to get better MPG in your jeep? Think about it.

I think everyone knows bigger knobby tires lower mpg. Putting small street tires on isn’t really some secret. Also running tires at max psi will wear the center of the tread much faster.

@@SuperbBicycle you are correct, you also know that there is no magic cure then to go from 14 to 20 mpg other than changing tires out. 99 percent of the tires that ever came into my shop who had their tires replaced were worn on the sides more because when your front end parts are loose, it causes more wear on the shoulder of the tire, so unless you're 100 percent sure your front end parts are fresh and you only drive on the pavement it would actually help to counter act the center wear, I'd rather drive on the center of my tread than the edge personally.
