How To Use an Automatic Buttonhole Foot

- In this video, I show you how to use and install the One Step Automatic Buttonhole Foot. This foot creates perfectly sized buttonholes for the exact button you are using on your project. No more guess work or uneven buttonholes! Also great for creating drawstring holes or openings for hooks.
If you want really pretty buttonholes, apply a small amount of Fray Check along the center strip of the buttonhole. Allow it to dry before opening the buttonhole.

This is great. However, these buttonhole videos always leave out one thing...HOW TO KNOW WHERE TO PLACE THE FABRIC. In other words, you can't just sew a buttonhole anywhere. How do you place the packet under the foot so that you are sure the placement of the buttonhole will be perfect? Thank you.
Your pattern will have markings on where to place the buttonholes. You use a pin or fabric chalk to mark where to start sewing the buttonhole.

You would use the guide or pattern markings to determine where to make the marks.
Hi, Im using gs2700 but using exactly the same buttonhole presser foot that u have. May I confirm, while pressing the paddle, will the machine stopped when it os done, or do I need to stop stepping on the pedal to stop? I have tried 1 buttonhole and I find it too long already thats why I stopped pedalling myself. When I watched your video, I realized, I didnt reached that point that the machine slows done just what was shown on your vid.
It shouldn't keep sewing and become too long. Make sure you have the bar pulled down all the way. On the machine, in the video, it does just slow down and I have to stop pushing the pedal.
It's always a good idea to practice a few on some scrap fabric to be sure you're happy with the look and the thread blend before sewing on your actual project.
I have this same machine and did all these steps and it won’t do it! It’s a small button. Could it be too small and not registering?!
What exactly is the machine doing or not doing? Does it begin making the buttonhole?

I'd try a larger button on some scrap fabric. Make sure the lever is pulled down all the way and in the right position. If it still doesn't work then it may be your machine. You could also try a different buttonhole style.

How do you determine the length
The size of the button determines the length. That's why you put the button in the back section of the foot.
Hello, my machine starts normal, but it doesn't close the loop completely. It stops halfway on the second line and goes back to finish it up. Any suggestions?
Once it stops is it complete? Do you know if it is a one-step buttonhole stitch? Some are not.

That's odd. Did you get it from a dealer? What make and model is it. It sounds like it is malfunctionig.

Hello Moni...suggest to watch in this video how the buttonhole lever is positioned behind the first white tab (bracket) on the left side of the buttonhole foot...it is behind the tab...and importantly ...it is touching the tab...look carefully at the 3:05 point to see that and make sure to position the lever on your machine that way as well. Also...read in your sewing machine's manual step 6 of buttonhole sewing...note that it reads: When lowering the presser foot do not push in the front of the presser foot otherwise the buttonhole will not be sewn with the correct size.
My buttonhole does the first bottom lines but will not do any more

mine did that too. With my machine, the part that you pull down, I have to pull down and push it to the back. It kind of clicked. Worked great after that. Kathy Piscitiello

Hi, I have brother LX27NT. How to get thicker button hole. What should be the settings for one step buttonhole/? :)
That's not a machine I'm familiar with but the users guide should show you. If you no longer have the guide you may be able to find a PDF version online.
When you put your button in the back of the foot it essentially tells the machine what size to make the hole. All you have to do is figure out where you want the buttonhole to be placed.
There is a little more to it than that, especially pulling down the bar that resets the foot, a step many people miss. Thank you for watching the video and commenting.
I'm trying to put buttonholes on a faux suede jacket and on my sample the buttonhole attachment just chews up the fabric and clogs the feed. How can I fix that?
Try rethreading the machine and make sure it is in the tension disc. Do a test buttonhole on some regular cotton fabric and see if the same thing happens. What machine are you using?

That usually means the bar in the back isn't pulled down all the way.
I do not understand where the bobbin thread and the top thread are supposed to go. I cannot find a video explaining this. Also, my bobbin thread keeps bunching up after the first 5 or 6 stitches. What's up with that? Help please!
The needle thread and the bobbin thread should be under the foot and towards the back of the machine. 90% of the time if your thread bunches up your machine is not threaded correctly. It's usually not in the take-up lever. Do you have any issues with regular sewing or is it only with the buttonhole foot?
Thank you for replying! I seldom have issues with regular sewing (I'll get an occasional bunch up here and there). However since trying out this buttonhole foot I have nothing but issues. I did pick a different thread this time, it's a heavy polyester.. maybe that's the issue?
It may be the heavier thread. Did you use the same thread in both the needle and bobbin? I'd try some test button using a regular weight thread and see if you still have the same issue. What model of sewing machine are you sewing on?
I usually hold on to the 2 long threads at the back to start out.

I did everything just as you showed. I made one perfect buttonhole. After that it would go back and then stop. Any suggestions?
Did you rest it it after each one? Some machines require you to re-engage the lever you pull down.
Yes I actually did that, was even more careful to do that after your reply. It still made a mess. I rethreaded the machine correctly, too the bobbin out and put it back in, carefully and correctly, still made a knotted mess. Then I tried changing the tension, etc. No better.
Hello...I have Brother ST531HD and the bottom home go thru the process but when it returns back to complete the hole...it bunch up underneath...please help thank you!!!
Trying pulling the thread tails further back before you start sewing and always make sure the machine is threaded properly. Often if the thread is not in the tension disc or the take up lever you'll get that mess underneath.
Is there any way to use the button foot fora larger button…
Hi there - I have a Singer "Confidence" model 7465 sewing machine that came with a one-step buttonhole presser foot. I watched your video first to know how to use it. I've followed all the instructions, selecting one of the buttonhole pattern options on my machine but the machine needle just goes up and down in the same spot without moving the fabric along. I've checked the pull-down arm to make sure it's between the two guides and it seems to be set correctly. Any ideas? Thanks!
Your hand completely blocked the view when you attached the foot.
How it goes on depends on the machine, some push on and some snap on. I do have a separate video on how to change the foot on a sewing machine if that's something you need help with. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

If you have a button that is large like a 2"button how would you do that?
With a button that big you can't really use the automatic button foot. Some machines have a button hole stitch where you select the size, and it stitches out the button home almost like a decorative stitch.
If your machine does not, you can draw the length, set the machine to a zig zag stitch that isn't very wide, and create the rows yourself making sure to create the bar tack at the top and bottom.

@@herlindamaria6416 This machine has a three or four-step buttonhole. It will not automatically move through each step like my machine does. If you search your machine name and then buttonhole, you'll find a few youtube videos that show you how to do it.

This was very helpful! thank you! One question though, my sewing machine seems to get stuck at the bottom of the buttonhole and just keep sewing in the same place. What could be causing that?
It could be that you don't have the arm pulled down all the way. What machine do you have? It could be that your machine does not stop and reset itself after it completes a buttonhole.
When I do this all I get is a little circle. not a long buttonhole
Have you made sure the lever is pulled down all the way? What machine are you using?
@@LetsLearnToSew My bad...I have a drawer full of all the attachments from every machine I ever owned. Turns out I had grabbed an old buttonhole attachment and that is why it was not working. When I found the correct one it worked perfectly.

My buttonhole starts out good but when it comes back to the start of the hole it just keeps going straight and doesn’t continue in the rectangular pattern
Have you made sure the bar at the back of the machine is pulled down all the way?

It depends on the machine. Most you have to lift it back up manually.

Hi. how did you set the treads? I've been trying but l couldn't
I usually hold on to the needle thread very loosely and turn the handwheel towards me. This will take the needle thread down into the bobbin case and pull up the bobbin thread. then place both threads to the back of the machine. At the end, I tie them off on the back of the fabric.

It seems that you are moving the fabric ? Do move it or leave it in place ?
The fabric does move but you don't have to really do anything except watch to make sure it stays lined up. The feed dogs under the fabric are what move the fabric back and forth.
No, I don't move the fabric. When I recently bought the machine it made them perfect. But after a few buttonholes it started messing up. I haven't done anything differently. Could it be the foot presser?

How do you take it off once it's on?
