I don't have anyone in person to help with sewing garments so I look for tutorials. This is the only one I've seen so far that shows how to lay out a pattern on the patterned fabric and mentions how to read the garment sewing instructions regarding "wrong" and "right" sides of the fabric and the "wrong" and "right" side of the pattern during the piece placement.
Thank you so much for this video! Exactly what I needed. I have searched all over you tube and am so happy that I found you and this video. I used to be a competent, but not great sewer when my daughter was young and she is now about to have a baby in about a month, so I want to start sewing again after some 30 years. I need to relearn the basics and this video was just perfect. Thank you so very much!
Thank you so much I'm glad I found your video it helps a lot. I'm about to cut my fabric and I don't even understand the instructions I had no idea how to cut it so thank you so much. This is my first time to try how to make a skirt.
Greetings! Lovely tutorial for us beginners! Please feel free to suggest products you use in this tutorial (links), such as the recommended chalk pen and pins. Thank you.
Hello I have a question 🙋♀️ great video but is there anyway to avoid cutting the pattern to persevere the pattern in case you want to make it again with different sizes for others ? Thank you for the video I’m a beginner at this just absorbing knowledge!
i am confused and have made a few boo boos cutting out patterns ....if it is single layer fabric then is it face up with pattern piece face up as well?
Great video but have a question, I have heard before that you never use pinking shears to cut out fabric on your pattern, you can use it later to finish seams, is that the case?
Most people don't use pinking shears to cut out the pattern but if you choose to do so it won't mess anything up. I have a few friends that do it to save time.
Does this mean that I have to repurchase my pattern if I want to make it for someone else a who is a larger size and I‘ve already cut out the smaller size?
Do I need to iron every type of fabric I am using? Example: I want to make flannel pajama pants. I have seen people press the seems open. But I haven’t seen anyone press that fabric before starting a project. That said, I’m very new to sewing so I’m always learning new things. Please advise me on what I need to do with flannel. And also what I need to do with 100% wool. I just bought some wool for a project. And while I got an amazing price for it, it was still expensive and I want to take care of it. Thank you for your help 😁🦋
Yes, I would iron/press even flannel smooth before pinning the pattern to it and cutting it out. If there are wrinkles under the pattern, it can cause seams to be uneven. It would be best if you also pressed seams as you go. The pattern instructions will almost always state to pre-wash, dry, and iron the material, and then in the steps, it will usually state which way to press the seams. Wool can be tricky, and I usually avoid anything but finger pressing or using a roller on it if I need to press something.
Thank you so much for your quick response to my question. I did wash , dry and square the flannel. I wanted to make sure that I started the project correctly. So today I will press the flannel and begin my project. I’m very excited to get started. Once again, thank you so much for your quick response. I’m really enjoying my new hobby! 😁🦋❤️
If your pattern has numbers on it, mine doesn’t have numbers on it. I’m trying to figure out what line is supposed to cut on the book that I got says the size and then it says I’m number eight small because I’m like a 12 anyway but it doesn’t say anywhere in the book what line to cut on so I thought I guess I would count the lines to number eight?
So I guess that meant the bottom of the large piece was facing up THEN doubled which is why I'm looking at it facing down so I would've understood printed side up then fold over.
You're cutting 2 mirrored pieces. The fabric is double. If you only had one layer of fabric you would place pattern piece right side up to cut one side of shorts then right side down for other side of shorts. It's 2 legs you're cutting .
I'm only a minute in and I'm hearing "this is the grain line and all that" but of course I can't see what's on the blurry paper at 3' away. I would really love to see what's being talked about. I'm looking for teaching videos where I can learn (at my age) from scratch and it'd be helpful if I can see what's being talked about so I get it.. Thanks.
I have some free patterns on our website but the pattern used in this tutorial was a store-bought pattern that can be purchased on Etsy, eBay, or local craft stores.
Does anyone know where I can find teaching videos for sewing beginners that don't understand a word. Now she's saying the grain line.. Huh. I'm guessing that means the way the lines are going but I need a video that explains all of this for a real live beginner who's first day is today.
If you don't know the grain line, look for the selvage edge. it's very easy to see: it is thicker, more tightly woven, usually has a different color than the rest of the fabric, contains little dots and sometimes designers' name. The grainline is parallel to this selvage edge.
I know what that is on your arm, it is an ironing burn. I get them all the time when I reach around to grab the handle, telling myself, this time I won't burn myself. 😊
While this is a good beginning, you did not show how to measure the grainline so that the pattern and grain of the fabric is straight. A crucial issue!
Please don't! Always tough at first, I'm in the same boat. Just at least complete one project even if it comes out incorrectly! You will be better next time!
I absolutely love how you explained this tutorial! This is great for beginners. Thank you so much!

I'm glad you found me!
Came for the super cutting tips (I just made a mess of my first attempt) and stayed for the sweet sound of those scissors 😂😂😂😂😂 love them!
Thank you! I was looking for the information how to lay the fabric and you managed to explain it so brilliant! Thank you a lot!
Thank you so much for addressing which side the Fabric faces when you are cutting out a pattern. I subscribed.!!!
great demo. You described the steps so well. much more confident about my project meow, thank you!
Thanks!
❤
Great teaching video! I know how to sew and just needed to refresh my memory a little so I can better my sewing skills.
I am in the same situation as you are and found this video so helpful.
Excellent video! Thank you so much

You didn't mention measuring the straight grain line to make sure there is an even distance from the selvage.
Yes I thought that too, you need to make sure the grain line is even all along . Good point
Would these tips also apply to knits, or would that be different? Thank you so much, I just started and I struggle with this part

fellow beginner! look for videos on tracing wheels :)
You can trace it out.
Best ever! Thank you so much!

You are a goood teacher
CAN I USE A VINYL CUTTER OR ONE OF THOSE LASER CUTTER MACHINES TO CUT FABRIC?
This may sound dumb, but what if you kept the material print up, but flipped the pattern piece upside down?? 😅🤦♀️
It isn't because of the pattern or dimensions, it's to make sure your marking lines aren't seen from the outside
@@lucasfluffy9809 that's fair. I think what I was asking is if it would work to make sure the piece would be correct.

Great Video, I thought we have to cut the fabric little bit outside of the pattern

I just came across this set of videos because I'm struggling with another pair of shorts...you mentioned this fast, but what are the crotch lines for?

Do we need to leave a little bit more fabric than the pattern on each side for seam allowance?
No, commercial patterns include the seam allowance.
So I guess that meant the bottom of the large piece was facing up THEN doubled which is why I'm looking at it facing down so I would've understood printed side up then fold over.
My grandma taught me 😊
what about the seam allowance, is that included in the pattern? thanks though, for the video!
Why do you need to put the pattern print right sides together?
Thats my problem, my pattern instructions doesn't say
what about measuring the grainine?!
The only question i had is what about the seam allowance?
Yes thank you for explanation, how can I get the cuts pattern? I really need it, can I pay for it?
This is a Simplicity Pattern you can buy in a fabric store or online.
what kind of pen is this? i usually cut points out for the markings.. tfs
It is a refillable chalk pen! I love them! It lasts forever and isn't messy like traditional sewing chalk. amzn.to/2UhM6zC
Don't you mean printed side down?
I have a question, seam allowance?
Seam allowances are included in commercial patterns.
Can you tell me the name of the fabric as it doesn't look like it frays. Thank you
It's a premium quilters cotton.
I like this it will help me
is every pattern layed out on the right side of the fabric
No, the instructions will show you.
Can anyone explain why we need to put the pattern printed side up on the WRONG side of the fabric?
You're cutting 2 mirrored pieces. The fabric is double. If you only had one layer of fabric you would place pattern piece right side up to cut one side of shorts then right side down for other side of shorts. It's 2 legs you're cutting .
Thsnk you!
no seam allowances??
The seam allowance is built into commercial patterns. :)
Why u didn't keep seam allowance ?
The seam allowance is built into the pattern when you cut it out on the size you need.
Some video it as be a long time for me on sowing Nanette

What if the directions don't tell you if it is right sides together or wrong sides. The only instructions on the pieces say cut 2 mirror pieces.
Is that a simplicity pattern?
It is, I have all the videos under one playlist. :)
Where do you get pattern pieces from?
You can buy patterns from most fabric stores. Each one has different sizes you can choose from, and they are usually 15-20 dollars.
I have some free patterns on our website but the pattern used in this tutorial was a store-bought pattern that can be purchased on Etsy, eBay, or local craft stores.
I just need a clear table lol
😂

I don't understand why to draw on the pattern since it wasn't explained either.

I give up.

This is not good advice for a new sewer, so many steps not mentioned.
