  • To deny that Shadowlands made a lot of mistakes is to deny reality. From the Jailer, to the Covenants, to the story and the lore, and everything in between, Shadowlands was a failure of colossal proportions, but none of those issues are the largest in terms of impact in comparison to the BIGGEST issue few ever think about. Let's talk!

Shadowlands has the potential to be a good expansion for World of Warcraft. It has the potential to be good, but Shadowlands fails because it's a big Retcon expansion. Now Retcons really do not bother me too much as long it makes sense to retcon something and as long it is not too many. It is hard to follow a story when it has so many retcons due to constant changing of the plot to suit the fans and the story. So retcons aren't inherently bad, but when done poorly or done for the sake of fans, or it is done too many time it can sometimes be detrimental. Also if a retcon its directly contradicts established continuity, it is inherently bad and should not be done because it will leave everyone unsure about what's canon and what isn't. I think the main problem with retcons is when they happen constantly, or is done to please a group of egoistic haters, or its directly contradicts established continuity, but if used well then it could do good things. For me, retcons are fine as long as they're well-conceived, get implemented consistently, respect the spirit of the old material, and they are rare.
The problem with Shadowlands is that it retcon already established continuity like the creation fo The Scourge, Frostmourne and Helm of Domination who were the creation of, Kil'jaeden. But, Shadowlands just give you the middle finger and says it was The Jailer all long. The Dreadlords for a long time it was established they were Demons from the Twister Neither something that even the canon Illidan Novel also established, but nope! Shadowlands just give you the middle finger and says they were the creation of Sire Denathrius. Shadowlands is like a hug fanfiction where the Author self-insert his/her own OC pretending that his/her OC is literally the most important person ever and everything revolves around them.
Then The Jailer could be a very interesting character if handled very well, but he is poorbly handled. Early on, it wasn't clear what his motives were, but Chains of Domination made it clear that all he wanted was to reshape reality so everyone would serve him. Your typical one-dimensional villain. That's why we're trying to stop him. And the ending of Shadowlands doesn't make sense. The fact that the writers show that The Jailer has a motive all along, but we find out about this after his defeat, makes no sense. The Jailer never explained his real motive to anyone, not even Sylvanast, who was supposed to be his trusted ally. Then we have the fact that Blizzard tried to hype The Jailer's powers, but The Jailer relied too much on his minions, and he go down like a Chump.
Blizzard seem has this weird habit of coming up with a story on the fly for a new expansion that doesn’t care enough about previous events which causes them to retcon. I mean Chronicles was supposed to be 100% the ultimate compendium for the timeline on how the Warcraft Universe works. But now, Blizzard is retconning Chronicle just because The Player found some random books in Silithus, and Shadowlands has its own Cosmology Chart. So, just for these faulty reasons, Blizzard decides to retconed Chorinicle. So in my honest opinion, Chronicle is canon and it will always been canon. I don't care what Blizzard say. If I don't trust Nintendo with the Zelda Timeline, I don't going to give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt.
    Period.
