Thank you for atking us along! Croatia looks like an artist's paradise for landscape painting. You've done some lovely work in terms of paintings while you were there. I love all the colors in your sketches. One of my good friends and colleague was born here but his mother is Croatian and he went to visit his mum's home town a little over ten years ago.
It really is a landscape painter's dream. I'm so glad you liked all the colors, it's a very pastel and bright kind of place. I think over the years many people have moved away, it's great that we go back and visit at the least. :)
Loved your travel blog. Croatia is beautiful and it was nice to see family there - not the tourist view. I know fellow California abstract artist Betty Franks is from there and visits her mother periodically
Thank you! That's true, definitely wasn't a tourist/vacation vibe, but it's really a peaceful place to visit for anyone. I don't know about Betty Franks, I'll have to look her up 😊
What a visually breathtaking video. Thank you for sharing such vulnerable and personal moments, from a trip with your family. Watching your thoughtful and reflective painting and sketching is so peaceful. I also adore the Sture Better You song :) 14:48
Oh Maria, what a lovely vlog. I'd love to visit Croatia. Your paintings were fantastic, even if you aren't usually a watercolour artist, I could certainly see that you'd improved after only a couple of pieces. Thank you for sharing your lovely family and dad's childhood home with us x Nell
I enjoyed this video! Croatia looks beautiful and I'm happy to see you sketched! also looking forward to larger paintings from the reference photos you took! The fish scene was very sad though. The fish was moving in the basket because they were suffocating without water and in lots of pain :( saying this from a kind place, we are all learning.
I like the idea of finishing the watercolor paintings with a black fineliner or colored pencils, and they make for lovely and personal reminders of the family visit. It looks like such a calming place and the video is so relaxing and slow paced, yet you made so many little paintings!! You’re a machine! Even on a holiday you’re more productive than I am when I try to be. I hope you enjoyed painting them as much as I enjoyed watching them. All the love, T._
Oh definitely layering on top of the watercolor was satisfying. And they are great reminders now, you are right. Thank you so much! I did enjoy making them :)
Such a beautiful place to visit! Croatia is lovely ❤ thank you for taking me to a place I have never seen. I find watercolour very challenging because I am not patient enough to wait for the layers to dry and I get mud every time 🙄 Your sketches are great as always 👍
Maria, wow this was a great vlog episode. They always inspire me but that highway behind the houses was so sweet to see. This showed me you really do like drafting, and yet you didn't look to be using a ruler, does that mean I didn't see it or are you good at straight lines naturally? I hope your reference photos help you moving forward and I hope you stay refreshed moving into the fall. Cheers, Dave from Canada
Wauw you were in Europe 😊, I've not yet been in Kroatië but it looks very similar to Greece and the Greek Islands , so beautiful ! So great you did the effort to make those beautiful sketches because on holiday it sometimes is easier said than done . I am sure they will turn out into great paintings as they are already 'tiny' ones in your sketchbook in my eyes. Do you make use of a grid to make the sketches into your sketchbook from the photo or do you just 'jump into drawing' ? Looking forward to the future artworks , good luck and joy .
oh yeah that coastal area definitely has some similarities to Greece. I had a good amount of free time to fill so sketching wasn't too hard to get done. I used a grid on all the full page sketches to help transfer the photo. If I was sitting at a location I worked without one. :)
did you call your grandmother 'nonna'? italian? you make capturing a scene and painting look so effortless, even with a new to you medium. that is such a talent. can't wait to see the paintings you come up with - you always manage to capture the most unique angles. bet your pups missed you!!!!
Thank you! They were fun scenes to capture. I think the pups missed me a lot! Nona is just a version used in some costal parts of Croatia I believe, she's not Italian.
I had to watch again this one is sooo amazing. Stay well 😁

Thanks for taking us on your trip. Your art journey is so inspiring and you are amazing.
Glad you joined and watched, thank you! 😊
Beautiful ❤ the watercolor sketches were lovely, and I can’t wait to see the larger paintings of your views of Croatia.
Thank you! I'm looking forward to making some :)
It's so strange to see a familiar place with different eyes :) If you come back and have time to meet let me know - I'm less than hour drive away ;)
I hope I did it justice, it's a beautiful area :) I'm not sure when I'll be back but who knows, that would be cool to meet some friendly faces there
This was so lovely to watch! So peaceful and scenic! Thank you for sharing your view of the world with us.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching my viewpoint 😊

Thank you! I'm glad the more personal viewpoint was enjoyable still for others. That song is a great one :)

Thank you! It's such a beautiful place to visit! I agree, definitely made some improvements after the first few pages of the sketchbook 😅

I struggled to be patient with it too 😅 and leaned into those colored pencils heavily. Thank you so much for watching and enjoying :)

Thanks Dave! I had a small ruler to outline the box I sketched inside and a few lines here and there. I love my rulers 😂
