Just wanted to take a moment and say thank you so much for the captions. I have an auditory processing disorder and being able to read subtitles (that aren’t TH-cam’s auto generated garbage) really helps me understand and retain more of what you teach us. ❤
Thank you so much for taking time to let me know this. Currently, I type them (because I don’t know who else can understand me 100%. Lol.), so comments like this go a long way encouraging me.
@@TheCrafsMan I'm actually a BBC captioner so I watch almost all of your videos picturing how I'd represent some of your speech hahaha
@@Lewiiiiiiiis Got me smiling real big on that one. :D
same!
I love subtitles and really appreciate when a youtuber actually does their own. Glad to see you thanking the Crafsman
As a financially challenged teenager who loved sculpting, I could never afford even the cheapest tools. Just getting the clay was hard enough. But I had this moment of inspiration at the dentist office, when I noticed that their dental instruments were basically the same thing. I just asked if they had any discarded tools I could have, and imagine my surprise when they showed me several boxes worth of instruments and told me I was free to grab whatever I wanted! Most of them were of course broken or bent in some way, but usually just at the one end, and even then perfectly useable for sculpting. So I always recommend fellow artists to ask their dentist, and some of them have had the same luck I had.
Good for you! Never hurts to ask! I've been a professional "artist/craftsman" for 30+ yrs. and I'm like a crow. Everything has potential as either a material to use in the art or a thing to be used as a tool to make the art. Some get too caught up in "the correct" tools. Having the eye and the imagination to take random stuff, garbage, sticks, etc and use them is an art form in itself. I even did the same as you about 3 years ago and sure enough, the dentist handed my a bunch of tools they couldn't use anymore. And a good hint from my experience, is to tell people you're an artist, sculptor, craftsperson and you're wondering it they have any old this or that laying around you could have. People get really interested in you being an artist and are usually more into giving you a hand. I'm in my 50's, so in one respect, my age gives me the ease of life experience (and not giving a poop what people think of me) to talk to people. It's much harder, usually, when you're a teen. I never forget that as I was painfully uncomfortable my whole life! BUT, being polite and not bothering people when they are busy with something, and being a teenager can also be an advantage. Older folks like to see well meaning and well mannered young people taking initiative.
Best wishes to you! And never think no budget means no way!
Also ask at your Veterinarian office !
That is a very resourceful way of thinking! It will no doubt influence your future endeavors!
That's a really fantastic suggestion! :D And like a dream come true, right? :D
And yes, from what I've seen, metal wax/sculpting tools and dental pics are essentially the same thing. Some slightly different ends (dentists really like the angled ones for getting behind teeth). Also... they use electric wax carvers similar (maybe smaller/more compact and slick) to ones used by toy sculptors who work in the wax medium.
Speaking of "dentist", one of my last eBay searches was for one of those overhead arms they use. :) Was seriously going to try and utilize that for making videos. LOL.
(Way outside my price range.)
@@TheCrafsManhave you seen inheritance machining's approach?
Sitting at the Laundromat waiting for my clothes to dry, what better way to pass the time than a new Crafsman video!
Whenever there is a new Crafsman video, it's instantly a better day. While I actually have all of these kinds of tools, I now want to make my own just because I can.
The production of all of this is insane! Every video I watched of yours just oozes creativity and I'm here for it
"I use a BLADE" 🤣 I love that SO much.
OTO7 is a national treasure and needs his own talk show ASAP! As always, amazing video Crafsman; your production quality is off the charts!
I really, really love your sound-effects and the robot-voices - those things really make your videos unique. Far too many TH-camrs think they need to scream every few seconds and make some "funny" remarks all the time and that's super annoying. Your videos are informative, creative, entertaining and always so pleasant to watch. Your videos are the antidote to all that crappy content! Keep up the good work!
Dear Mr the CraftsMan, I hate youtube algortythm for not appreaciating your videos more! Your creations should have at least a billion of views! They are just like a magic balsam to my ears and eyes 🖤
We love the "unique-icity" of your custom tools! 🤖👍
Glad to see ol Earl Grey is doing well, it's been a while since he made a cameo
Clicking on one of your videos is NEVER a mistake!
The way you kept the pin from flying across the room when you cut it was genius!!
The most fun part of making your own tools are, you know you need this tool. You know how you put it together, it's as unique as the part you're sculpting.
And when it falls apart you can only blame yourself and make a better one.
Puting the tip of the pin in the clay before cutting it, so it doesn't fly away, is a genius move.
Crafsman, you are a treasure.
I love that you didn’t even address the biggest hack in the video! Putting the tip of the pin in clay before clipping it off!
I don't care for how many years, I will always have a spot and time to watch and appreciate and even learn
and make things from the Crafsman. I really want my own OTO7, We will see when I can order one from Japan. Lol
Mr. Crafsman the production value is the sprinkles on top of a already awesome service you provide. Keep up the great work
I've seen other comments say he's like the new Bob Ross and I agree. I find his mellow way of speaking rather relaxing and love the stuff he does
Howdy Craftsman! Would love to see a video of you making a similar puppet to your "main character". I've always been inspired by Jim Henson and the craftsmanship puppets. It would be awesome to see you make an extensive tutorial
There is a great sense of accomplishment in making your own customizalitized tools!
My favorite sculpting tool I made was a ball tool from an old antenna. It had a perfectly sized ball on the end, clipped it off and glued it into a bit of wood that I had pounded into an old metal tool handle with some nice knurling.
Mannnnnnnn, that sounds fantastic! :D
"you want it to get a good bite" as he proceeds to build a tool using fishing tackle. I love this guy so much!
First time on your channel but I just adore those small additional commentary with all those soothing "yeah, yeah", "man", "uh" etc. I would listen night radio program with you just reading a phone book.
Anyway, great content too!
Ok but using a cube of clay to prevent metal slivers from flying across the room when you clip it is the the greatest tip.
the editing in this video was so fun to watch
Majoring in art taught me that anything can be a tool in the right situation.
And I finally got my hands on my own Pocketnaut. I greatly enjoy it.
I look forward to your next release. 😊
This just made my day soo much better. Thank you Crafsman...your knowledge therapy is unparalleled.
The pen and silicone trick was awesome. Already made to fit everyones hands
I often save your videos for days where I especially need a smile or some inspiration. As always, this did the trick and was just what I needed today! 😊
That was a slick little trick you used when you clipped off the point of the pin so you didn't loose that sharp little bit of metal.
Some of those tools are really expensive, so thanks for giving diy alternatives! Glad to see OTO7 is settling in to their assistant role! 💖🤖
Thank you, sir. Brother Crafman, it's been a very long week, or month. I needed this. I'm not even watching this with the family (I'll make sure we all watch it tomorrow). I'm just going to watch this and hit the sack. I hope y'all are doing well, and that the weather ain't too bad y'alls way.
the fishing tackle is genius, my dude!
Scalpula should be in the video description XD Thanks Crafsman!
Use the tools you have to make the tools you need! Heck yeah, Crafsman.
OTO7 is trying so hard, it's adorable
Gorgeous.
Kit Bashing is such a good mindset to teach. Keeping your eyes peeled for bits and bobs to craft with- Priceless.
Thank you for this fantastic comment!
It's something (having that eye or mindset) that can make almost any shopping experience better.
And it's like the more you do it, the more you can't help but do it. :)
Love this Crafsman. I have about 5 of every one of these tools, but now I want to make my own.
Thanks so much uncle Bill!
It's sorta addicting... that "thrill of the hunt" territory associated with kitbashing, where you know JUST THE RIGHT PIECE is laying around somewhere.
This was so well edited and clever as always. Never cease to amaze with the ingenuity.
Crafsman you always mention safety on your videos and that’s rad. Because I once was sculpting a rancor and had dropped a razor sharp sculpting tool in my lap. I was sitting in the lotus position. When I got up I kicked that tool with one foot right through my heel and out of the bottom of my foot. I went into the ER and they were all like “ YOU FIRST.” So practice safety because you can’t be safe enough. I appreciate you Crafsman for all you do and your safety standards. Thanks for another great vid.
Ohhhhh I just winced so hard. Mercy. Glad you are ok!
Brilliant! I need to remember that fancy tools don’t make better art. Makin’ the tools you use to make the art is a sweet way to go. Really smart ideas, too.
I love the new character.
Happy to see OTO is helping out.
Crafsman out here craffin' tools to crafs more! Crafs on crafs on crafs.
P.S. Shoutout to OTO7.
My heart...when I saw the Elixir strings 🤯
Inspiring homemade tool ideas! I gotta make myself some of those!
I wish that I could achieve Your Level of Cool and of course Steady. thank you for the therapudical therapy
Friday just got happier!
No notes, perfect sculpting tool video! I just made a set of needle tools with sewing needles last week and they're perfect for miniature sculpting.
I've been binging Crafsman videos for the past few days - jumping around from original to most recent. The editing has reached fire level. The crafs have consistently been wonderful!
Friendly voice, cool tips, awesome human. Thanks, Crafsman!
Your videos bring me so much joy Crafsman!!!
Teaching folks how to make their own crafting tools is next level kindness.
No.. you did not just skip over that genius move where you stuck the end of the pin in the molding medium in order to keep it from flying up in an eyeball when you snipped it…. That just changed my life a little bit. That needs a highlight.
Woot! This made my day! I love having some Steady Craftin coming in. I loved the Essential/Overboard box, but I'd have to be super careful with something like that in my garage. One flip of the switch and the place would be empty. I love how 0T07 is working out.
Hahahahaha! :D I hear you on that! ;) And mannnn, thank you so much for the kind words!
I would definitely buy an OTO7 t-shirt. Jus putting that out there
Love making my own tools. Sometimes I prefer making them than using them lol. Great tips!
this is one of the coolest channels for real
CrafsMan, thank you. you are dearly loved.
❤ how you say cause there's something about professionalism followed by "Look at that there Boy!" 😄
You're Awesome Crafsman !
And Love the New term for Spatula - SCAP-Chula actually sounds pretty coooo! 😎😁
@thecraftsman clicking on one of your videos is never a mistake ❤
I just absolutely loved this episode, Crafsman. My boyfriend is dying to know if you play guitar, since you have all them guitar wires. That hack seems like something a guitar player would come across.
The only thing better than DIY videos are DIY tool making videos
No matter what I got into over the years, making the tools for it always got me more excited than the actual art/process I was developing.😂 Spent more time researching and reproducing old lithier and violin makers tools tgan I ever did making instruments.
After a while, other professional makers started asking to buy my tools. Turns out I'm more of a machinist tool/die maker at heart😂
Hot damn I just adore your videos. There's such a warmness, a coziness, a lighthearted humor to them, and something more. To borrow your phraseology, there's a love-nicity herein that I have never experienced with another creator's work. No one can do it like you, Crafsman. You're one of a kind. Keep on steady craftin!
Just wanted to tell you what a HUGE blessing you are in my life Crafsman! Thank you for all your hard work. I just joined your discord too, I was in need of a place to ask people for guidance on building and repairing things from upholstery to clocks to even building miniatures. So I appreciate you sharing that in your last video! 🤪
I watch ASMR to fall asleep but Crafsman is so damn chill and soothing, if I wasn't to invested in the video it could easily out me to sleep
I've needed this video so bad.
Oooh crafsman got some upgraded intro segments!! Love how you’ve combined techniques you’ve taught so now we can see them in action. You’re a master teacher as well, thank you!
This is so helpful!! And the intro, the bloopers at the end, my goodness
Some pretty genius ideas there man!
I found a whole mess of old sewing needles that are perfect for sculpting. Also those dollar store ball styluses are awesome.
More out takes please!
Great video Craftsman! I love making me some micronicity tools for all purposes and you just gave me some brand new ideas. Thank you for all you do. You truly are one of a kind!
What a cool way to make my own tools. Thanks Craftsman!
“Look at dat boy… yah yah yaaaah” 😂 always makin me laugh crafsman
I've been watching you for years and never commented in any of your videos but this one made me want to comment I love your editing
This may be the earliest I have ever been for the Crafsman. 😂
This is exactly what I needed, thank you Crafsman!
So glad to hear it! You're very welcome!
I needed you today Craftsman. Thanks for the level vibes!
If I may add so ideas:
-Pen bodies are good handles too for the wire/metal tools.
-Chopsticks: Good for handles or craved into tools and usually free!
-Some of the big fat knitting needles, both aluminum and plastic make good handles and often have holes in the middle like the dollar store spoons. Get'm at thrift stores.
- You can pack a bunch of guitar string pieces into a metal tube and crush the end or epoxy/ crazy glue them in. Makes nice stiff brushes for texturing.
- And one of my favourite things you find on the street for free! The brush blades from the street cleaner vehicles! They are thin, flat strips of spring(ish) steel. They fall of as the brush disk sweeps the pavement. usually 8-12" long. Really good for making shaping paddle/sm. spatulas/scapula's(LOL! ;P ) and loop tools.
THANK YOU!
I'm fixin to cut open one of these knitting needles - I didn't even think to try that! They'd be fantastic handles!
And chopsticks... utterly fantastic recommendation!!!!!
Thank you for watching!
6:02 When you brought up spatulas from Kinder Eggs, my mind went to the Mexican candy Duvalín where they come with little spatulas as well! Maybe you can use that if you have the treat at your local store
Also, repurposing wind chime bars can also help with DIY handles as well when you mention that layer in the video!
Seeing some of your editing now blows my mind, I’ve been a fan for a few years now and can’t believe how many improvements you’ve made. Seriously inspiring. Thank you for always trying to include everyone regardless of skill or monetary situation.
13:25 I used to just wrap the handles of my tools in tape to thicken them up. You can also find foam/silicone handles meant to slip onto pencils from kid's school supplies. Really helps to avoid cramps in your hands.
When I still had my old tablet, I wrapped like, medical bandage around my stylus. Though over time, the adhesive started to seep through the tape.
It feels good, but something to keep in mind if you've got sensory stuff issues with stickyness like I do.
Yes, excellent ideas! :D
The most "ergonomically correct" handle I ever made was from some leftover silicone putty.
I mixed up too much so I applied the remaining chunk to an x-acto knife handle - mainly for something to do - and sorta left my fingers formed into it how I would hold it, making a really cozy fit. But I find often times you want just a nice *uniform* thick handle, for tool rotation control. Thank you for watching!
I ,for reasons unknown started using the of handle of a finger nail clipper to sculpt with years ago. It's small and rounded at the end. It's cheap too! Tom Clark,a man that scuplted gnomes and such used a toothpick. He was fantastic!
ADDING THIS TO MY ARSENAL RIGHT NOW.
For real... got a set of old cheap clippers that come apart. It's like the clippers have been asking this whole time to be used as a sculpting tool, and I've been ignoring it. :D
@@TheCrafsMan Hey Crafsman! I use the whole clipper. One time I used the flat end of a toe nail clipper handle on the head of the cyclops from the old Sinbad movie. It made the lines in his face just fine. I also use them to cut my toe nails,it's getting hard to chew them off anymore. God bless you Sir!
I don’t know if anyone else mentioned it yet, for a ribbon tool, you could also use a blackhead/white head removal tool. They often have two different heads that would fit the use of a ribbon tool and I’ve seen them at the Dollar Tree before.
Speaking of DT, if you’ve ever picked up their foam sponge brushes, if you have any that are no longer usable, unscrew the foam head and you have a pre-drilled dowel for use.
Finally, with Halloween right around the corner, pumpkin carving tools can definitely be helpful too. Just wait for the after-Halloween clearance sales.
That's right! :D I show a Dollar Tree one briefly at around 3:00.
Excellent tip about the foam brushes too! Thank you!
Crafsman day!!!
I'm keepin on, keeping on. Another great vidddeo brother
Dude what a set of great ideas!!!
so happy to have found your channel today, am starting in a shared pottery studio for the first time and don’t have any tools, gonna make a bunch of these thank you so much
No matter what I got into over the years, making the tools for it always got me more excited than the actual art/process I was developing.😂 Spent more time researching and reproducing old lithier and violin makers tools tgan I ever did making instruments.
After a while, other professional makers started asking to buy my tools. Turns out I'm more of a machinist tool/die maker at heart😂
This is a wonderful comment! Thank you for watching and taking a minute to share!
I used to go back and forth over buy-vs-make. and I've come to the conclusion that in the *making*, there's a certain satisfaction and reward associated with it, benefiting our mental state. And there's definitely value in that. :)
Thanks again!
@@TheCrafsMansometimes it's about finding satisfaction and happiness in the little things. rock on craftsman! 😃🤘
I remember some of the music around 16:20 without the beat used when you showed how you worked animation on your computer. It cast a mellow spell. It's called How I animate without taking a year (or ten)
Dang!
That's impressive, my man! I have a hard time remembering just 5 videos back. :D
I sincerely appreciate you steady watching. Really.
Crafsman, I don't even need no sculpting tools, but I done watched this whole video. I do like OTO7 though! He seems like a huge help in the shop. Nice work with all the scapulas, erm- spatulas!
Excellent video, 90% of my pottery tools are homemade! ❤
Love you Crafsman, your videos are so relaxing and help me get excited about doing my own projects.
This video was so much fun, Crafsman. Those custom silicone tools are very clever indeed!!! Kudos. Also, your "magic switch" that changes your tools is GREAT! So creative... I looked for one on Amazon, but couldn't find it! : )
My man.
The editing in this one … on point
I just love OTO7! I’m a huge fan of robots!
I feel like I have entered an alternate universe when I watch this channel.
I really hope everyone stayed to the very end of the video cause the outtakes are just as amazing as the rest of the video lol
