    ➤➤Transcript (Partial):
It’s unbelievable the degree to which our sanity depends on a functioning sociological structure. And here’s why: Well first of all, you kind of need to know what to do every day. You have to have a routine, because you’re an animal. You know, if you have a dog or a cat-dogs are a really good example of this. Dogs like routine. They like to be walked the number of times a day that they’re supposed to be walked. And they get quite sick, very rapidly, if you don’t routinize their days. Children are exactly the same way. Now you can overdo it, right, but still, you know, you need to know approximately when you should get up. It should be approximately the same every day. You need to know approximately when you’re going to eat; you need to know what you’re going to eat; you need to know who you’re going to eat with; you need to know where to buy your food.
It’s like 80 percent of your life-70 percent of your life, something like that, consists of those things that you do every single day, that you repeat. And those are often the things that people think about as the trivial elements of their life, but one of the things I would like to point out, if you do the mathematics-I did this with a client of mine who was having a hard time putting his child to bed. They were having a fight every night. And I knew by that time that the studies indicate that most parents only spend 20 minutes per day of one-on-one time with their child. Now, the reason for that is that people are busy, and it’s actually not that easy to parse out 20 minutes of one-on-one time. It’s a lot bloody more time than you think. But that’s all there is: 20 minutes. He’s spending like 40 minutes a day fighting with his kid, trying to get the kid to go to bed. And that’s not very entertaining. You know, you think, well, he’s just having a scrap with the kid about going to bed but it’s no, no-if it happens every day, it’s a catastrophe. So you do the math. So we’ll say five hours a week for the sake of argument, just to keep it simple. It’s 20 hours a month. It’s 240 hours a year. That’s six 40-hour work weeks. So that guy was basically spending a month and a half of work weeks doing absolutely nothing but having a wretched time fighting with his son, trying to get him to go to bed. Horrible. Right, that’s just way too much time to spend doing something like that if you want to actually have a positive relationship with someone because it’s just too-it’s just too punishing.
Well, so you need structure, you need predictability, and you need more of it than you think, just to keep you sane. Now if you’re lucky-you can deviate five percent from the norm, or ten percent from the norm, or something like that-carefully and cautiously, as long as the rest of you is all well ordered in a normative manner. You might be able to get away with that, and you might be able to sustain it across time. And people might be able to tolerate you if you do it. Or maybe you’ll get really lucky and you happen to be creative but reasonably well put-together, and people will actually be happy that there’s something idiosyncratic and unique about you. But even under those circumstances, mostly what you want is to have a routine that’s disciplined-that’s predictable-and bloody well stick to it. You’re going to be way healthier, and happier, and saner if you do that.

The gift of finding sanity is, you get to cope with the insanity of others.
People signall back and forward not to validate if the other person is sane.
People do that to check if their level of insanity is still at an acceptable level.
it is far more complex ofcourse.

I enjoy listening to Jordan and I agree with most of what he says. There are points, though, that I don't necessarily agree or disagree with but that I say to myself, "Yeah, but..." like when he mentions the point of needing others to help us organize our world. I can only think of being socially introverted. Some people can't handle or feel very awkward in social situations. I would say I agree with him that people need others to help organize our world but it's quite a lot more difficult for some people to seek out or even want to seek out others to help them move forward with their life in a positive, structured, routine manner.
I'm also glad he's back and seems pretty healthy.

    • @nate9198
      @nate9198 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Regardless of whether you are an introvert, he's touching on the idea that humans are largely social creatures. I'm an introvert, but i see the utility in having a social structure. We should have at least a small handful of people in our lives to provide us with feedback about who we are as a person and to regulate our sanity because we will never achieve this alone, the world is too complicated as Peterson points out.

My life is chaotic, no sleep schedule, I’ve changed professions 8+ times in the past 10 years, I’ve been homeless multiple times.
I’ve never had a significant other, or my own home. Completely alone, in my little white walled apartment. I don’t even want to buy furniture or decorate it because I’ve had to start over from zero so many times I’m not expecting to live here for more than a year. I’ve never had $2000 in my bank account ever
    I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs. I don’t have any friends
I’m pretty sure most men in my position would’ve either offed themselves already or turned to hard drugs, because I’ve seen people in better situations do that more easily
I am a shell of a person, I have no joys or ambitions, I care not for intimacy or relationships, when bad things happen I don’t even really react to them anymore. When good things happen I don’t even notice.
I feel I’m mentally defective, but not in a hurt myself or others way, just feel like I’m separated, no connection to others, not even family. Like I get what Peterson says but it’s like it doesn’t apply to me

I enjoyed the content, there are some people who struggle greatly when they are overwhelmed with the consequences of not behaving as people would like, but it is important for people to understand that sometimes that person’s behavior could be linked to many circumstances where they felt it was appropriate to act in that manner. Based on my experience, some people will encourage you to believe something is normal, when in fact it is very offending and disruptive to others. If an innocent child is mislead during the time where they are developing their beliefs, it can have severe consequences for something that they weren’t equipped to understand. Kids only know what they are taught by the people they trust, and as a child, you aren’t developed enough to know what makes someone trustworthy. It’s important to know the facts about what lead up to the behavior being unacceptable, and it’s not right that the child has to get punished on top of that.

Do dogs like routine or have pets been separated from their natural instincts and rhythms? Animals in the wild have patterned daily and seasonal rhythms. Perhaps people could optimize behavior according to their natural circadian rhythms, best attuned by exposure to sunlight and shaped by the timing of eating (and/or fasting) and the quality of sleep. In other words, does the impulse to socialize like the drive to monetize reflect separation from nature and the unnecessary creation of needs? Are cognitive structures of prediction and control based on materialistic assumptions about causal relations which disregard synergetic potential and synchronicity?

Moulding to and being shaped by a society that creates an environment for a parent-child relationship where the child resorts to fighting to get 40 minutes of undivided attention, is the problem in itself.
Dr P contradicted himself here, since he presented the child/bedtime example as the problem, and the shaping to-fro our social norm a solution.
So if that 5% deviation window drives change, it's worth asking ourselves which way we're driving it. It's also worth asking what the consequences are, and how that bedtime story may play out.

Is it wise to outsource our sanity? Look at society right now with the restrictions and lockdown. We do not have predictability or structure anymore because of a few health officials and governors.
So again, is it wise, when you cannot predict what those who can affect your structure will do? We outsource sanity at the cost of predictability and control.

Jordan saved my life but I don't believe routine is a thing. Did the humans a few thousand years ago had routine??? Indont think so. It was more about moments. For example a lion will hunt but won't hunt same time same day same month. They hint when hungry OR if the opportunity comes to them sooooo being an animal is not a valid example

Jordan Peterson is very disappointing and incoherent: he sees through Trudeau who is a complete disaster for Canada but he is very harsh towards Trump who did such a good job for his country and the US citizen. Usually Jordan Peterson is poised and balanced, rather fair, but in Trump's case he is very biased, I wonder (a hunch) if this is not coming from his wife: many men are influenced by their wives' liberal standpoint and just parrot them (keeping relative peace at home). This is the proof that someone can be highly intelligent but limited in some aspects.
