- It’s Thursday, so we decided to take you along for our TLC (Thursday Lunch Club). In this episode we head out for a picnic and use our lovely ID Buzz as a perfect day van.
We also take time to answer as many of the questions and comments as we can from our recent van build series including how will we power the van? How will we cope with the small size of this micro camper?

Great video for showing us what the future will look like. You’re pioneers for the leisure industry.
Wow Mick, thank you x
That was a grand vlog folks, thank you.
I get what you both are saying but it's like what I said it's not for everyone and as for the second car question I would say that van with conversion must be close to £70.000 that's a lot of money for a second car but it's your money I personally wouldn't of spent that kind of money still love your channel like watching you guys I'll leave it with I hope you manage to get the most out of it
Well if it was me I’d put it down as a company vehicle, for tax purposes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Steve hasn’t done that. All these types of vehicles have their drawbacks in wet and cold conditions, they are fine when it’s sunny and warm, but when you have three days if rain then you’ll never know where to put the wet clothes when you return to it. But sitting here in a campsite in Italy watching a few people with these types of van, you can see the faff when they arrive and when the leave, unloading and then having to repack it so precisely, so I wouldn’t have the patience, and I’ve hit better things to do with my life then mess about that much.
But hey it makes good content for TH-cam.
Love it!! Thanks both
Thanks for all your help and for being so lovely when we met you! We had such a great time chatting!! 💁🏼♀️
As the earlier comment said, it’s far far to expensive for a second van/car for your average Jo IMO , but I still absolutely love your Channel and travels
Small functional van that has dual purpose for you both
But I would assume for the majority of us way too expensive!!!
Brilliant 😊 thank you both for always sharing valuable authentic information for us all. You both work so hard too, and what you do with your hard earned money? good on you both 👏 without this spending we all wouldn't know, justifications are NOT NEEDED ever ... love everything you do and cannot thank you enough ❤
🥰🥰🥰
Great video, like the interconnect of the Buzz and Clayton units for sharing power. Which air fryer did you use as looking for a low wattage one.
Great video! 👍🏻
Thanks
Just love the colour. We have one gas bottle left then I want to re do the interior of our vw campervan, so it is all electric
I am hoping to convert an electric vehicle to a coffee van in the future and thinking the id buzz could be the way to go, hoping a Clayton power system could be made to run a commercial coffee machine all day! Certainly seems an impressive bit of kit though!
Thank you! Sounds like a fabulous plan!
Looking forward to the Transporter HQ video on a full clayton install ❤
I’m sure Andy will go in to a lot of detail!
Excellent info on Clayton. I have had the 3000 Clayton in my Vito Conversion Van for last 2 years and its a powerful dream especially for my coffee machine. Coffee anywhere any time too. Also the unit can jump start your vehicle too if you run down the vehicle battery.
I have just sold my Van with the clayton unit in it and it made money ontop of the cost. It was the Installer who said to go for the Cayton over the normal Victron.
I have got a MoTo 8.7m and its till surprisingly under powered with a 1800 w.inverter. I jsy doubled the battery power however on storage.
So I was going to replace the current inverter with Victron however thinking what you have all been saying and getting rid of Gas hob which it came with, Ill probably go for Calyton in the gas locker now as ideal space and do an electric hob.
Keep up the good work, maybe see you on the road sometime Im sure, Our first month road trip is July in France on the new MoHo, cant wait.
Well I enjoyed your London adventure in the Buzz. It’s an overnighter van, not a holiday van. Great way to save on hotels.
😂😂😂
Exactly!!!
Yea brilliant ,buy a van for 100k and save sixty quid on a hotel room , it’s Brexit all over again .
Love it dual purpose 🚐🚐😀👍
Thank you !
I love your Buzz, I'd like one all to myself! Jo in France 🇫🇷
Jo it’s gorgeous!!
Love the vid loved the kit…..you don’t have to justify anything to anyone!
Thank you lovely 🥰
Clayton - is this a solution for upgrading the electrical system on the typical lead acid vehicle and Lifesure battery on a traditional van build without spending thousands ripping it all out and putting a lithium battery system in?
Hi guys like your video, what make and model air fryer are you using in the buzz please.
This one chefree-official.com/products/chefree-air-fryer-2l-compact-design-af300?RoamingRadfords&RoamingRadfords
Hi guys, although I have never been a fan of electric vehicles this is probably the best one I have seen and it could almost convert me if it wasn’t for the dreaded VAT on the base vehicle and the fact you still pay RFL on it, if it wasn’t for pioneers like yourselves willing to experiment with your ideas this world would be a very boring place. Great vid.
Love the van but not the costs involved. Power system seems like a fad, after all it wasn't that long ago Jackery and Victron ruled!
A fad, or evolution? As technology develops there will definitely be changes and shifts in the options available.
Two questions. Why did you go for the Cargo and not the car? And your cargo does not have an up-and-over back door?
The car is more expensive and we would have had to rip out the seats and additional trim etc. just to throw them away. We originally ordered it for work as a basic van, had we ordered it as a conversion we would have probably ordered it with a tailgate instead of barn doors, but it turns out the barn doors do have some advantages, so we’re not that disappointed.
Hi guys, could you let me know what display you are using in the Buzz for the Claton. Cheers Paul.
I’m not sure Paul but it says Montana at the top left of the screen?
A very interesting video. The Clayton Power unit looks very well made and is probably extremely reliable. What surprised me was the high price, compared to e.g. an Anker Powerstation. Almost 3 times as expensive per kWh of storage. I am wondering what justifies such a big difference?
It’s more comparable to a separate Victron setup rather than a consumer power generator.
A great video I would never criticise as I am not up on doing camper vans and I no longer allowed drive due to medical reasons.
Ah sorry to read that Simon. 🥰
What is the air fryer you guys use, it looks perfect for what I want x
I believe it is in this video

Thanks Tony x
Hi I’ve just subscribed to you , I love watching you both on TH-cam, we have a Toyota Alphard campervan after many years of having touring caravans , were your parked in this video I didn’t know it was there , we have family that live in Bletcley which isn’t far from you , and we live in Kings Langley.
Welcome along Alex!!!
Milton Keynes is full of lovely picnic spots! It’s been a while since we visited Bletchley Park!
Nice video and a fantastic project.
Not sure I am on the same page as you re weights though. I thought manufacturers only generally made an allowance for the driver of 70-75kg in MIRO figures, other occupants and a heavier drivers, I believe, comes off the payload with the key weight being GVW/MAM?
Manufacturers generally don’t, although VW do allow 75kg for the driver. We have 400kg of payload left after the conversion and I can assure you we both don’t weigh anywhere near that.
@@RoamingRadfords excellent
What happens if the vehicle battery is low like less than 20% and you need to get to a public charger. Will the Clayton run down the battery
Once the Clayton is full it will stop taking power from the vehicle battery
Great video guys, very informative.👍
Thank you x
Fantastic conversion, love some of the space saving ideas. You say that the Clayton takes power from the 77kwh EV 😮battery but does it do this directly or is it via the vehicles 12v battery? You mention a maximum charge rate of 30amps how many watts does this put into the Clayton when the ignition is on? I would estimate 400 ?
Thank you. I understand it’s been wired into the panel at the back of the van and I believe it’s straight from the big battery. Your estimate is pretty spot on, it’s just over 400w going in with the ignition on.
Thanks, I think your 400w is actually coming from the Buzz’s DC to DC converter which is via the 12v system. The Buzz will give aporox 14v when the ignition is on x 30a = 420w ish. If only VW did the same as The likes of Hyundai, Kia and VW and actually allowed you to use the HV battery directly via a in built inverter then there would be no need for a Clayton.
I guess that would make sense since I need the ignition on to make it work. Yes it would also be nice to have a bidirectional V2L like Kia and a few other manufacturers do. Hopefully this will come in future vehicles.
You forgot to mention how much it costs to insure it after all those modifications. Interested who you used as most companies I tried wouldn’t touch it.
Excellent video very informative ❤
Will you take it to Morocco ?
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Very informative indeed, and very well put over👍👍
I love the vw van. That new power system sounds so cool. So much smaller than other system. Can't wait to see wow works for a overnight. Love your videos.
Great!! You can’t beat having the option of that second vehicle to take you off on smaller adventures and days out, love our VW maybe one day in the very distant future we could upgrade 😂
Amazing.. What more can I say. But thank you. 😘
Wish you’d been able to show that a few months ago, before we spent £7000 on a victron upgrade. 😢
Sorry Edwin. We have only just discovered them.
@@RoamingRadfords That the breaks, we decided that once the van arrived (back in December 23) we were having a big upgrade, air suspension on the rear, hydraulic jacks around, we were going for under slung gas but was talking into a refillable bottle system, 12 volt air conditioning so we don’t need to be on hook up, and finally big upgrade on the electric’s because I saw your system and I thought that’s the way to go, ours is no where near the size of yours but we like what we got. So the vans ready for its maiden European tour starting a month today 🚐💨💨💨💨
Have you made your summer touring plans yet?
Take care and stay safe.
Please remind me what Air Fryer you use?
I believe it is in this video

@@RoamingRadfords Chefree AF300. It looks just perfect for us however it's out of stock with the manufacturers and not available on Amazon, Ebay etc. Such a shame, but thanks for the info.
There is a Cosori one available on Amazon that looks virtually identical. I have two, one at home and one in my caravan, been really pleased with them. COSORI Small Air Fryer, 2L, Led Touch-control Display, 900W
@@Wezzers-vj8se Just ordered, thanks. We actually prefer the dimensions to this over the Chefree, as this one is less wide!
why cant solar charge base battery with any excess charge?
It can’t, it’s not currently possible to do that with the current hardware. The only work around currently is to plug the 3 pin car charger into the Clayton and for the solar to charge the Clayton, which works, but is inefficient.
It’s the equivalent of pissing into a swimming pool and expecting the level to rise! 😜
Random comment !!! What shorts you wearing steve ? Looks like zipped pockets 👍
Just an old pair I’ve had for years
Cant find shorts with a lot of zipped pockets anywhere ! Random and bizzare comment lol
You two are always interesting and possess natural presenting skills. Quick question; after the 200 miles range is up, how long do you have to wait for the van to charge up? Many thanks. Matt.
Thank you Matt. It depends on the speed of charger you use. It can achieve 80% in 30 minutes if you use a rapid charger.
Love your videos
Hopefully you’ve put it thru the business then claim vat etc back lol
And she kept a straight face........
70K for a second car I wish and they say we’re skint in the UK 😂
Sorry, were the costs in pounds or euros?
UK Pounds
@@RoamingRadfordsyes, sorry, Steve said it later in the video.
🇺🇸From America-Our Motorhome is all electric-until you have a internal surge and lose your ability to run everything in your Coach and have no alternatives like propane, you realize maybe everything shouldn’t be the same -maybe you should have some alternative energy sources on your motorhome-It was 3 weeks getting our electrical fixed, and I sure regretted having no alternative energy sources 🤷♀️
There is no way we would have considered putting any fossil fuels anywhere near this van conversion. This conversion needed to be fully electric.
Thank you for addressing those questions:
1. Excellent comment about EV’s. If people don’t want one they don’t need to get one! Too many people have preconceived opinions and closed minds.
2. The use of the Clayton. Initially I couldn’t understand needing a battery system when you are sat on a massive battery bank. It’s sad that VW don’t permit a power draw and inverter from the battery pack. This seems a short sighted restriction, bearing in mind that the Buzz is likely to be popular for conversion to a day van. Didn’t VW sort of promote the ID Buzz for that purpose? Maybe VW will change view on that and probably sell an upgrade!
3. Fully agree that Motorhome and Campervan manufacturers should be looking at a self contained unit such as the Clayton. What a simplification. £3k for a full electrical system with a 3kw inverter! Dometic charge £2k for a 3kw inverter alone.
I think the buzz is perfect for what ye want it for
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah as an off grid definitely green machine lover it's a no from me.........
when i was a converter i used to get asked a lot about converting other brand base vans apart from t4s and t5s 6 etc. My honest opinion was always dont! if your putting north of 15k and beyond into that van then you are investing into the base van. The conversion price is the same regardless, but resale will hit you further down the road. i saw converted vans that had been involved in accidents... fittings ripped out of the old cheap ikea kitchen cabinets done on the cheap by Bob luck and future insurance claims. where am i going? my down the road advice would be, well if you have 95k in hard earned cash, then play safe with your conversion and get those nice tdi lumps under the bonnet good for 300k miles. love your videos and your nice people, but i think people watching should just be a bit cautious with their hard earned money. If your loaded then hey have a party and have a good time. Some people buy leisure vehicles as a hobby and just a spare cash play thing. For others its their lifetimes savings. Which is why i was always upfront and honest to anyone considering converting a van
🚐💚👌
Clayton LPS units are the future of DIY van builds, they do away with all that faffing around with Victron systems and the expense of having Victron systems put in by professionals.
They really are fantastic!
Keep it
I'm not an EV hater even, though i prefer diesel. I usually love your vlogs and trips, but this really was for EV nerds. Sorry.
