The comical actions & the funny dialogues between River Song and the 11th doctor Matt Smith seems truly brilliantly written by a genius. Words can create such magical moments in life.

The River Song story arc was by far the most impressive produced in the new Doctor Who series. I was actually really hard to watch the series after she left because the story was so well written and the acting between Matt Smith and Alex Kingston was so damned good! Thanks for compiling this!!

Cait K completely agree she was only killed off in the Library episode because Russell only wanted her for the two episodes just to leave people guessing at who she was to the Doctor! Steven didn’t want to kill her off because he loved the character he had written and written it with Alex in mind so it paid off when he took over and found away to bring her back because after the library episodes a lot of the fans was interested in who she really was and wouldn’t drop it coming up with assorts of ideas about who she was. Was she a future version of the Doctor or Master? Was she his wife (which it turns out she is/was!) because of that throw away line about them being “an old married couple!” And River’s face when it’s said to them!?! Steven had planned out her whole story arc before he took over from Russell that’s why the first chance he got he brought her back in 11’s first season and deliberately gave Amy the surname Pond. Have to give the man credit he knew what he was doing with the character only having her coming and going without spoiling her character or over using her so the fans didn’t get bored of her. Russell only wanted her to add a bit more mystery to David’s Doctor. Steven did well spreading her storyline over seven seasons bringing it full circle in the Husbands Of River Song, as well as writing and filming a lot of the things she says to 10 about what adventures they’d been on etc... either in full episodes or mini episodes for on screen and then the Big Finish audiobooks and actual books. I would like to see her one more time though I’d like to see her with 13 to see how they interact with each other (River doesn’t see a different face when she sees the Doctor, to her he/she is just one person. Her comment “you showed up on my doorstep with a new haircut and suit!” Making it clear she sees past his/her ever changing face!) and explain to the new companions their actually married. I think Alex and Jodie would be awesome together in scenes as River and the Doctor saving the day just one more time because it’s also made clear in 12’s Christmas episodes and final season that he really does love her mourning her death and having just two photos on his desk Susan his Granddaughter and River his wife. And he knew the next time he sees her after Husbands of River Song she was going to her death that’s why when he gives her the sonic as a gift he scans her first storing her imprint and all her memories in the sonic knowing that he’ll work out he’s actually saved her in the library even though she dies which 10 actually says when he’s trying to work out why he gave her a sonic screwdriver at some point even saying to Donna “I’m very good, I SAVED HER!” And he ran off to quickly upload her to database before he lost her for good. @@river-phoenixlunapavier2641 thanks for that summary, I actually didn't know the back story, but i always did prefer Steven's Doctor Who writing over Russell, although I do appreciate that Russell brought the character back and gave him an interesting flavour.
I agree I would love to see the new Doctor with River at least once! Maybe in a moment of weakness 13 breaks the pact to not 'rewrite' their story line just because she misses River so much. Perhaps that would mess up the story 11 and river had and 13 now has to fix it!!
As for River's death, i though eventually 11 met River's ghost (an episode with Clara) and let River's ghost finally fade away because she was just a shadow, so River got her final goodbye... sniff!

Cait K - We _did_ stop watching after this story arc. It was _never_ as good after she was gone. The entire series ended for our house after that episode aired.

The saddest part of River with 10 wasn't her death it was Donna's realising the River knew the doctor but not her so she knows someone will happen to her 😥
Anna Shaw well, she must have done her research of the Doctor's previous companions. That's why she said to her she's from his personal future. Because River knows the day for Donna is coming, like what happened with 10. She couldn't even say thank you for saving the whole of reality. That's what broke River the most with Donna I think.

I'm just glad they gave her the ending she deserved, after she was just a side part of the last Ponds episode (and we're left to assume she'll be back often) and the suddenly she's dead in his timeline and some ghost? When, time travel means that shouldn't be true? Otherwise he should have had that "echo" ghost the entire time since Silence in the Library. And they just used her as some weird pawn of the plot rather than a very established returning character getting the dignity she deserved. The Husbands of River Song really celebrated the character and their relationship, and gave her a beautiful send off.

The River Song story arc from Ten to Eleven to Twelve was the best sci-fi story arc ever. And whoever thought of having them meet in reverse was an absolute genius.

And she never requested the doctor to save her once! More than that, she slapped him when he healed her broken hand. Truly, she was born to kill the doctor, to destroy humanity; she died saving it along with her beloved doctor. Such magical is her unconditional love towards her husband.

River Song is my single favorite fictional character of all time, in any genre or format. Perfect combination of writing and the amazing talent of Alex Kingston.
I am certainly going to miss Moffat's writing and the way he tied things together. Everything was so wibly wobobly. And timey wimely.
Some fans criticise Moffat's work but I think he is brilliant, writes great stories and characters. I'm looking forward to seeing what Chris brings to the new series and how he changes the show

Just watched this after not watching any Doctor Who for quite a while. I'd forgotten just how GOOD it used to be. Epic, huge, sweeping in scale, but always very, very human. They were a beautiful couple. I'm going to go back and watch my box sets again very soon. Thank you for reminding me.

All the years I thought it was just for the typical dramatic writing, but now I realized how it just makes sense.
The time of the Doctor and River Song essentially flows backwards.
She never met the 10th in person, and now knowing that the 10th also never met her before, she deduced that she couldn't venture further from this point of time.
That she'll never ever meet the Doctor again.

I guess even though their timelines were reversed, it wasnt perfectly backwards. It appears River bounced around the Doctor’s timeline a bit near the end of her life. It’s to be expected with time travelers. How Moffat kept all this straight in his head is mind boggling.
when I first seen the library and river I was like oh ok that cool and suck no biggy, but then after seeing the Library it gives me a tear in the eyes very good story arc

one of the best story/character arcs of the whole show. as a long time viewer i've thought since i was a kid that it would be possible for someone to meet the Doctor at random points in his timestream but this was the best possible use of that concept. the first episode with River i was thinking 'finally! i knew we'd get someone like this sooner or later!' but then there was the extra intrigue that it looked like there was a romantic involvement and that was completely unexpected. really brilliant. and then to have a set of companions be her parents, AND she's got regenerations which she can transfer!!! solving the 12 Doctor limit they were fast approaching! she's the swiss army knife of Doctor Who characters!

Agreed. I hate when shows try to squeeze another episode out of a season, and being funny and cutting back and forth. BUT THIS, this would be welcomed. At the end of season 10 f.e.x this could air as a special, River's Story. It would be watched by many fans. There's enough footage to make it good, and it is presented in a new way, much sadder as you see everything from her perspective.
This is a great interpretation of dementia for such old people being in love. My grandparents are going through this as we speak, this hit home.

Ayesha Gulam No she is human but has time lord abilities like regenerating because she was concived inside the time votrex while the tardis was in flight. Ayesha Gulam Well I guess he had to move on after Rose. She was stuck on the parallel Earth with the 10th Doctor copy. So since the actual Doctor couldn’t be with her he had to move on. He then fell in love with River and they got married! Hence their relationship being different since they are a married couple, whereas the Doctor was not married to Rose. They didn’t get to reach that point in their relationship.
Did anyone see the episode "Angels Take Manhattan" .... Spoilers (^_^)
In that episode it is shown why River turned down the Doctors offer to travel with him. She is afraid of allowing him to see her age and she doesn't want him to see that she is "Only" a human that can be damaged... I thought that was so sad, she loves him so much and would literally die for him but she thinks she isn't worthy of him. In the episode "Husbands of River Songs" it is revealed that she doesn't think he loves her, she says "how could someone as great as him love a ordinary moral, he would never come for me."
So comes off as so strong and confident but in truth she is so fragile inside; it's sad. She wasn't crying when he took her to Derilium because she knew it meant she would soon die, she was crying because she thought he was going to dump her. That he was bored of her and was going to choose to never see her again.

Problem is the doctor could visit Rivers consciousness whenever, so she isn't really dead in the sense. What a profound story line River is.
When you wrote this, he no longer could. They ended that line where her consciousness was still around BEFORE the 12th doctor. The only thing they did with him is show the last date. She faded away long before the 12th doctor. Before the 50th anniversary.

Well like most fans I didn't really watch all of Peter's episodes so I don't know how Moffit may have screwed up the Library storage facility for River's consciousness but let's note the Doctor basically killed off virtually all of the Time Lords back in the 1990's to give all the life hating flaming Gay drama queens at BBC who actually enjoy that sort of depressing nihilistic rubbish a pointless cheap thrill but brought them all back and then got another twelve regeneration cycles so pragmatically anything is possible in Doctor Who if BBC expects to make a lot more money from doing it than from not doing it. William Hartnell died decades ago but that didn't stop the First Doctor from doing a guest appearance in the 2017 Christmas Special. As an American Indian saying goes, "Once sounded in the ceremony of life, the drumbeat goes on forever."
Kayla actually it is true. the reason her Echo which is what the Doctor calls them hadn’t faded (because it should have faded along time ago and the 11th Doctor admits that it was his fault and he was very sorry!) because the Doctor didn’t say goodbye and let her go properly, when he does finally except that she’s dead and tells her goodbye in his own way (he doesn’t like Endings so he unconsciously kept her echo alive!) she finally fades away with a parting message to the Doctor sort of letting him know Clara was still alive! It’s all explained in The Name Of The Doctor. Rewatch that episode or just their final scene together from it the Doctor explains everything to River when she say’s “it’s hard to leave when you didn’t say goodbye!” So her imprint and all her memories are stored in the library but her echo or Ghost as you call it should have faded but didn’t because the Doctor never truly let her go because he misses her and he doesn’t like goodbyes, she’s his wife and she died because of him in away, and he really does love her even though she thought he didn’t! He’ll always love her her and feel guilty about her death which was shown through the 12th Doctors’s Christmas episodes and last season. He only had two photos ever on his desks Susan his granddaughter and River Song his wife! You saw every time anyone mentioned Rivers name or asked about/who she was he got upset and you could see the guilt he felt! The Doctor promised he would never let anything happen to her parents and he tried to save them a number of times going from the conversation in The Angels Take Manhattan but ended up creating a fixed point when he read Rory and Amy’s headstone. He promised on his life that he would protect River at all costs which is why he kept canceling and putting off taking her to the singing towers because he knew what was coming next but was left with no choice because that’s where the spaceship was going to crash! And the rest I’ve explained in another post about how he managed to save her imprint and all her memories. X

The episode of the pandorica opens happens earlier in her story, because there's where she gets the Vortex manipulator, and in the Good man goes to war, she already has it.

I grew up in the 60's watching Dr Who and loved them all, my favourite assistant of that period was Sarah Jane Smith, what a great actress and a huge lose, but River Song played by that fantastic actress Alex Kingston for me is the greatest Dr Who character of all time. Beautifully written by the team and brought to life by Alex, it has made you laugh & cry and keeps me in love with this wonderful institution that is Dr Who. if I was only allowed to watch one programme for the rest of my life this would be the one. Some would say but it's a children's programme, yes it is part of my childhood that I wish to keep into my old age and as men never grow up I have an excuse. I do not care what people say I love Dr Who. I have never meet any of the cast but that's ok with me I am not a super fan I just like to enjoy it in my way.
I've always hated the fact that they had river say "how have you got a new face? I thought there were rules!" to Capaldi. I know she had a great arc, but it means that she could NEVER have a cameo again, because she hasn't met any doctor after Smith.
Not necessarily, like a comment above suggested, if they wanted to bring her back for a brief 5 second cameo, they could just have her accidentally bump into the current regeneration and apologize before dashing off, with River never realizing who it was but all the memories of the past adventures flooding the Doctor's head.

I am a huge fan of Alex Kingston and River song is one of my all time favourite fictional characters. Even though I know all my Dr Who, i have just sobbed my self silly, not a dry tissue left in the house. Have just noticed that you have done other compilations.
