I remember hearing Oscar Peterson when I was maybe 10 or 11 and just being amazed. I used to stop and play and rewind a million times to figure out what the hell he was doing! I probably spent days locked in my bedroom haha only coming out for chips and cookies and soda.

Apart from the breathtaking performance in general, three things stand out: his recognisable classical training (including tedious scale exercises), his wonderful phrasing (in melody and harmony), and his sound on this marvellous Bösendorfer grand piano. Bless you, O.P. (thank you for sharing).

His dad tried to discourage him from going the piano route. But told him if you do it, you have to "be the best jazz piano player in the world". I think something like that would humble you because you don't really ever get there, until "the world" tells you you have arrived.

It’s amazing to see musicians who, despite being able to show off the entire gig for validation brownie points, can see almost all the beauty in music is always only a few steps away from first premises, imo all the momentum of truly memorable beauty & deeper felt meaningfulness in music is found in/catalyzed through the realm of true melodic simplicity. The rhythm is what wraps it together, given it has a directional foundation underneath.

The combination of Oscar Pederson , playing a music called jazz, a title like most that makes it only accessible to “jazz” fans limits its broad scope to the world because its music for the masses; coupled with a true phenomenon, Niels Pedersen , the likes that my never be seen again in not only his technical prowess but sense of time and then there his inner feeling for pure music; makes these two people to be never be forgotten butto be remembered for their love making music. A recording of Caravan is out of this world .....

Ya know, I love Oscar Peterson, and all his works. But what he does on piano with his left hand always leaves me in meltdown.
This intro to Caravan (and the rest of the song of course) is a prime example of that amazing left hand of his.
Bet the piano needed a cigarette afterwards.
Also, that was a stunningly beautiful solo by NHOP. Left me breathless!

My youngest brother loves Jazz and he once asked how can can one get a very good jazz pianist and I said I do not know. His answer was take Monk. Powell and Oscar and throw in a test tube and mix them and I looked at him and just kept quiet. I asked him and Art Art Tatum and he said Oscar already is Art. And that is when I stopped discussing jazz with him
