I just did my rear brakes on my 97 dodge ram 1500. This video was exactly what I needed to do the job! Everything about this video including the person doing it was very clear as to how it's done!!! Thank you so much! Couldn't have done it without this video!!!!!!!!

Thanks you for this video. I was almost to the point of panic when assembling my rear brakes. The video helped me a lot . The shop manual was not detailed enough. The last time I had done rear brakes was when I was in my twenties.

My additional tips is pay attention to the direction of the gear adjuster and the spring in front of it will affect the fitment of it. What they also failed to mention is that you need to first back off your brakes by using a screwdriver to lift up the tab and then turn the gear with another one or you’ll never get your drum off to start with. Also go ahead and buy another cylinder because 9 times out of 10 you’ll need one. Make sure to clean off the two cylinder pins really good with a wire brush to prevent dirt from entering the brake cylinder.

Q: I noticed your doing the driver side in the video. At the 28:05 mark you talk about the horizontal part with the spring on it and you mention the spring goes to the rear of vehicle. On my truck on the passenger side my spring is toward the front of the truck. Do I have the wrong piece on the passenger side, or is it supposed to be facing the front on the passenger side? My first time on drumm brakes. I have 94 dodge 1500 4×4. Anyone who know I would appreciate input. Thanks for the awesome detailed video!

Great video, doing my 99 and I took lots of photos, I neglected to take several overall shots and when I went back to see how it all went together I was stumped. Got me out of a bind in a big way. Did get tripped up a little moving over the the other side as the assembly is inverse in view and the flow of assembly is front to rear. Make sure you have yourself a great day 👍👊

hello, I wanted to get some clarification before I did any adjusting. I replaced everything in the video, a long with the wheel cylinder, all the brake lines going to the rear. my question is should I adjust the brakes like in the video now? or wait until I bleed the lines? I'm doing all the lines in the front as well so I won't be bleeding everything until the very end. I wasn't sure if the lack of pressure will have any effect on the adjustment it's going to need. as of now the wheel spins freely like it needs adjusting but again, zero fluid and pressure going to the lines. appreciate any help!

Good idea to put lug nuts on a few threads before you hammer on drum so you protect lug bolt threads while hammering.
Clean around axle stub that contacts drum. Lube it too. A punch and hammer works good to release drum. Punch drum between lug studs. Simple n works.
spray brake cleaner n clean rag before installing drum you have grease on shoes.
    GREAT VIDEO BRO, THANK YOU.

Very well done video, but! When working on the other side of the vehicle, the ratcheting to loosen the adjuster is the opposite of what is shown here. Also, I have a 2001 Ram 1500 and it has a lot more parts, especially the way the E-brake shoe is attached. My E-brake is attached with a cable that runs from the shoe guide at the top, through a pivot down to another kind of complicated spring in a cage that attaches to the adjuster lever. What a mess!

There's only ONE caution that you forgot to share: If you DON'T "adjust" the star wheel, (thinking it will adjust itself), then your wheel cylinder will explode thereby ruining your nice new brakes AND the cylinder. I've already ruined 2 cylinders and my new brake shoes and now I get to buy some more.

For anyone watching, the left side at 22:22 should also have a spring retainer the same that you'll find at 24:22. It should also come in the kit. As you can see in the video, it was left out. It might not be necessary considering my old brakes didn't seem to have them installed either. I would consider installing them because it will help center the spring.

At a cost of approx $17 or less per side you should be recommending replacement of all springs, clips and adjusting wheels. If you're going to spend the money to replace drums and shoes why on earth put them rusty critical pieces back in. Not to mention the time to clean up and put back in inferior parts is not smart. Especially for you braking system.

I wish mine had rotors and pads all the way around I hate brake shoes it’s just to much of a pain in the ass ideally you want to replace your springs and hardware every time you replace your shoes the springs ware out due to heat and expanding

+mauserk98bnz44 Thanks for checking us out! These parts and video look to be for a 1994-99 but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task. We'll pass this info along to our production team.

+Frank Ribido This procedure might be different for your application. We do not currently have a how-to video for this particular year, make and model. This is for 94-02 Dodge Ram 1500. Thank you for asking! 1AAuto.com
