      Aid climbing is so different. You are carrying all these extra weight, and trusting your life on the gears and stuffs that are just horrible. Free solo is about trusting yourself, aid climbing is about trusting that tinny number 1 nut and your tinny ass hook on some barely viable edges.

    • @hankzikakis4624
      @hankzikakis4624 3 ปีที่แล้ว +148

      Basically he is setting his own gear into the wall as safety. What he is placing into the crack is called a nut, and is designed to slot into a crack that narrows downwards / outwards. Once the nut is in place, you yank it downwards to simulate a fall, and if it holds fast, you attach an alpine draw (two carabiners with sling in-between). Then, you thread your rope through the other side of the draw.
      Without seeing the crack closer up it’s kinda hard to tell if this is a good placement or not, as the nut could be in danger of slipping farther back into the crack, and then downwards and out.
      That’s a very barebones explanation from someone with only a bit of experience.

    • @MEGAsporg12
      @MEGAsporg12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@hankzikakis4624 That makes sense, but is it so that if that one fails there are more to catch his fall further down or is this the only one holding him in case of a fall?

      @@MEGAsporg12 there's more below :) basically when you climb big walls, one person climbs up and sets the gear (this guy in the video) and then the second person will follow and collect the gear... I think

    • @hankzikakis4624
      @hankzikakis4624 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      @@bradleycarter694 Exactly! For this type of climbing (Looks like trad multipitch*) the leader climbs and places gear while the follower belays (rope safety) from below. The leader then sets an anchor higher up on the wall, and belays from the top while the follower climbs and cleans (collects the gear). Once the follower gets to the leader, rinse and repeat.
      The faster, more dangerous way to climb large walls is called simul-climbing, where the leader and follower climb the wall at the same time, setting and cleaning simultanously. This is very dangerous, as the rope length between the two climbers varies as they climb (longer falls), the gear experiences higher shockloads during falls (potential failure), and one person falling pulls the other person off as well.
      *Multipitch is a climb that is more than one ropelength.

    • @redanansi
      @redanansi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@hankzikakis4624 Also worth mentioning that when placed correctly the small micronuts are more than capable of taking his weight when pulling / sitting on it. Taking a fall is another matter. Micronuts are around 8kn and the smallest size are rated at 4kn, a lead fall could be as much as 5kn however often lower so you generally want to avoid a fall on the smallest ones. Not sure what size he is using there.

    Maybe try a BD Pecker (no hammer). They can make for great hook placements on stuff like that. Haha, easy to say when I’m sitting comfortably on solid ground and not looking at a fall above nothing. (;
    ...Ever so gently ease onto it and quickly to the bolt! Haha. Nothing makes marginal drilled angles feel so secure. Good Times.

    I wouldn't be up there without a parachute

    • @tonypepperoni612
      @tonypepperoni612 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's hoping the conditions (ie. wind) are good and if the wall gives enough clearance. when you fall you go straight down and if you don't have a good enough angle you could potentially smack the wall. also imagine having a rope tied to you with a parachute on. defeats the purpose of the parachute.

    The only thing that keep me from climbing especially in wilderness is my stomach, i just can't imagine when i high up there and my stomach react to the call of the nature, should i just shit my pants or should i just open it and let it go ???

    • @therflash
      @therflash 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not allowed to do the do from the wall, because there could be another climbing party half a kilometer below you, who'd get shit in their eyes while climbing. Not fun. Here's a video of the logistics of the nature call on big walls: th-cam.com/video/73aMK1dTCjY/w-d-xo.html
