    I have a "medium/strong" beard with a sensitive skin. I tried everything, from many brands of electric razors to all brands of multiple blades disposable razors... I still couldn't shave more than once every three or four days (unless I wanted to look like Freddy Kruger). I also tried a Merkur safety razor... it was better but not great, until I bought the AS-D2... I then reached shaving nirvana (along with the Feather blades). The AS-D2 is expensive but, for me, is worth it to the last penny.

      I was the same. Nothing worked for my skin until I got the ASD2. I was using an EJ89 with Personna Reds which worked alright, but that ASD2 with the Feather blades is the best.

    Thank you very much for this video! In many test videos of the Feather razor, I see it being used at a completely wrong angle, and they are surprised that it is not effective enough. I have tried this excellent Feather AS-D2 razor with many different blades, but for me the green Astra Superior Platinum blade is the most effective and the best. It doesn't work well for me with the Feather blade, I feel much better with the green Astra blade. My opinion: the Astra Superior Platinum blade is thinner and sharper than the Feather blade.

    About 8 months ago I became a devoted wet shaver. My first DE safety razor was an Edwin Jagger DE89, which came with a smooth handle. Despite comments to the contrary, I found this handle too light and very slippery. I changed it to an Apollo handle, which was clearly better, but quite heavy. I purchased a Feather AS-D2 after very positive reviews, and must say this is an incredible instrument. Your review is right on, and, for me, this razor even with a brand new Feather blade, is as close to shaving with no blade at all. It is without question the pinnacle of shaving. If cost is no object, buy this razor and you will not need any others. I wish I had the $60 back that I spent on less expensive brands. And if you want an inexpensive razor, the Feather Popular is only about $20 and is also terrific.

    A good razor (particularly a non butterfly one) will literally last a lifetime. At $250 and a conservative 50 years, that is $5 a year (a coffee). But forget about value for money - if it gives one pleasure it is money well spent.

    I have been DE shaving for 10 years and have used straight bars, open combs and slant bars all in the attempt to find the perfect razor. My beard is heavy with patches around the jaw line, upper lip and neck that grow in various directions. To handle these patches and get an overall BBS, areas of my face receive several unneeded passes. I don’t have sensitive skin but these addition passes result in irritation and “weepers.” No more. The Feather AS-D2 has the perfect amount of aggression to handle the majority of the shave with one or two passes but is gentle enough not to irritate already smooth areas while dealing with the difficult areas. I have read reviews that tell that the razor does not shave. This is not the case. When using this razor remember three important words… angle, angle and angle. This razor requires a much larger angle than the typical DE razor. It is not hard to find this angle but if you don’t you will just be wiping away shave cream. I have used it with several different blades, creams and soaps. Always the same result… perfection. The price made it hard for me to place the order but after the first shave any possibility of buyer’s remorse completely vanished.
    Con thanks for the videos. They are well done and enjoyable.

    I own a Merkur Futur, Progess and Edger Jagger DE89. I also own Feather Artist SS & DX straight handle shavers. Feather is an exceptional company making excellent products. This Safety Razor is in a class of its own. You get what you pay for. I found the angle statement similar to when I use the Merkur Futur, By changing the angle slightly you get the maximum results. Less angle still gives you a good shave but not the best. Experiment and find what suits you. I had the same angle trials with the SS & DX. The Feather blade is really the icing on the cake.

    I bought the Seki feather double edged razor as my first double edged razor and have not been disappointed. The learning curve and dangers of the feather blade other commentators have made, I found misplaced. It's a low blade exposure design and I find the 45 degree angle no problem to adjust to.

    For me this the #1 razor that works for me. Started with a Gillette Mach 3 when I was 13 years old and then started to use dispoable razors up until recently when my beard growth really kicked in as I'm near my 30's now. My granddad used to shave every day with a Gillete safety razor and if he was going out then he needed to shave again.
    So when I found myself shaving two times a day with disposable razors just to keep my stubble at bay, I then realised that something had to be done. The Feather AS-D2 with a sharp feather razor blade was the solution to my shaving problem.

      Alan H though they designed it for use with their own blades, it will use any DE blade on market.Try stepping down to a less sharp blade till you find your technique. Then work up to the feather blade, it's likely you are putting pressure unknowingly. With that razor and bade you really do have to let the razor weight do the work. Just find the angle that fits your skin and beard type to not be aggressive.

    I bought an AS-D2, and tried it with a new feather blade, to see what it would do for me. My go to razor is an ATT closed slant with a PolSilver SI. Overall, it's a nice 'trophy', but I'm not that impressed in term of quality of shave. For the money, ATT is just as good quality-wise, and will give you a better shave.

      Thanks for your question Saby. In my experience I found that this razor does not cut as effectively as it should at 30 degrees. It cuts well, it's very comfortable and it's top class, however you may require to do an additional pass. It's all about the angles. An exceptional razor!

    I'm new to safety razors and my first purchase was the Edwin Jagger DE89Lbl. I have incredibly sensitive skin but a think beard. The EJ does ok on my face, but it is a blood bath on my neck, beginning with the second pass. I've used it three times with the same result each time. I'm using a high quality shave cream and brush and I'm following all the tips I can find for beginners. I'm very tempted by the AS-D2 because I am truly enjoying shaving for the first time in twenty years...that is until it's time to shave the neck. I would appreciate any advice on the Feather or other less aggressive razors. Thanks so much. Great video.

    • @shavetheman
      @shavetheman  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Jay, there are a number of factors that lead to a neck blood bath. I've been there and have experienced exactly what you have relayed in your comments.
      1. Assuming that your preparation and lather are fine, I would experiment with different blades. You may have heard this before but I cannot stress just how important it is. Blades vary wildly, and perform in peculiar ways depending on the razor. Try sample packs. (I will be posting a video soon on how to find the right blade using sample packs). This may appear tedious but will reward with trial and experimentation.
      2. The grain of hair growth on the neck is NEVER straight forward. Hair tends to grow in various directions and must be dealt with accordingly. You can't just assume that shaving in the same direction on your cheeks will have the same results on your neck... as you have clearly already discovered. Try and determine the general direction of hair growth on the neck, i.e let it grow for 2-3 days. If you have a magnified mirror, take a closer look at the various (and believe me the growth varies) directions of growth, and develop a gentle strategy to tackle this area. Don't rush. Take your time.
      3. The safety razor itself. The Edwin Jagger DE89Lbl is a wonderful razor but given the variables I just mentioned, a milder razor will definitely minimise the blood bath. Feather blades in a DE89Lbl will not produce the same results then say, Derby or Astra Blues in a DE89Lbl. Variables, variables, variables everywhere, the damn things dominate traditional DE wet shaving!!
      In my opinion, the Feather AS-D2 will produce a less aggressive and gentler shave for you. No doubt about it. If you're comfortable with investing in this top quality razor, then by all means do so. You won't be sorry. If that is not the direction you wish to take however, then experiment with blades and master the growth grain of your neck area.
      I'm assuming that your prep is fine. For some men a pre-shave oil helps. This will also help soften (supple) the skin and whiskers.
      Thanks for your feedback and comments Jay. All the best with your decision. Keep shaving with safety razors. Don't give up. Let me know how you go.

    • @JayThornton23
      @JayThornton23 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shave the Man Thank you for the thoughtful and helpful reply. I think my prep is fine. I'm using Stirling Soap and love it. I've been doing a bowl lather and I am very satisfied with the results. I've tried a pre shave oil but I do not notice any difference. I have a pre shave soap in the mail to me as I type. I have used the same prep on my head, but with a cartridge and it was the best head shave I've ever had. Once I master the face, I'll try a DE on the head.
      I may end up going with the AS-D2 if trying new blades and further practice on my technique do not improve the results. In the mean time, I ordered a Gillette Aluminum Tech 1973 T2 off Ebay to try a more mild shave. I'll let you know what I discover once I have a chance to try it out a few times. Thank you again. I am looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    • @SirOreo62

      Hello Jay. After watching this video, I ended up buying the Feather AS-D2. I already had an eye on this razor but was concerned w/ the mildness reported by many people. But after viewing this video and its mentioning the correction of the angle to 45 degrees I thought that was probably the difference maker. So I decided to bit the bullet and I'm glad I did.
      I can testify unequivocally that this razor will fit your bill perfectly. Like you, I grow a full beard with thick stubs. I'm of Italian, French, and Spanish ascendency. So I got "lucky" by apparently getting the most hair growing genes possible in all three cultures (lol). Also like you, I have a sensitive skin. I am in total love w/ the Feather and its performance. It is just like shaving w/ a true feather, and unlike many reviews, I don't find the razor to be mild (not aggressive but not mild either). I correct the angle to 45 degrees as explained in this video, use Feather blades, and with a 3-pass shave I get a baby smooth shave that is as close as any other DE razor without irritation or the burn sensation hours after the shave which very often I get w/ other razors (even w/ using high quality aftershave products). Also, gone are the times when I had to skip shaves to recover from irritation, burns, and even cuts that prevented me from shaving.
      The other advantage I'm getting out of this razor is that I get a longer blade life. Because of my thick and heavy beard growth, my other DE razors give me 2 shaves worth of blade life (sometimes only 1). With this one I get between 4 and 6 shaves per blade.
      The only disadvantage, if at all any, is that I notice my shave lasts a full day instead of 1 1/2 - 2 days which I get from my more aggressive razors. However, I highly welcome shaving daily and using my shaving products more often, which I love.
      True, you can get probably equal shaves from cheaper razors, but you'll be getting a truly beautiful and durable stainless steel razor if you can afford it. Its engineering and craftsmanship are supreme. It should last you a life time if you don't drop it from an airplane or have a bull dozer run over it.

      Try using Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn Street shave cream and Personna blades. This combo never leaves me with any nicks. And I use a cheapo $10 butterfly handle from sally beauty supply.
      This is a great looking razor, but I couldn't justify the cost. I do want a nicer handle though one day...

      Ferdinand LuDo I find that the Feather blades are really the best with the AS D2 as they were probably engineered to be used in conjunction. To still be satisfying and effective that mild razor is dependent on superior cutting edge of the Feather blades to gain it’s advantage.

    I have found with a few razors that over time the treading wears out, leaving the razor unusable. Does this happen with this AS-D2 as well?

    • @Kazimov100
      @Kazimov100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You've probably gotten this question answered by now but just in case you haven't the answer is No. The threads wear out when lower grade metal/metal alloys are used like Zamak(think DE89 or Merkur razors) they're also more susceptible to corrosion . Stainless steel razors(which the AS-D2 is) on the other hand are much more durable and will last much longer(might dare say many lifetimes especially if you take care of it well) . Just don't tighten the threads till death.
