Here I go again! After my parents (forcibly) moved us to West Central Florida in 1964, I scanned the radio dial ("I am a DX'er) and discovered WTMP 1150 AM "Soul Radio" (Tampa, Florida). I LOVED that station and their station ID jingles were distinctively unique and totally different from the PAMS Radio Jingles that were heard on WLCY 138 in St. Pete. I will never forget WTMP's regular radio commercials of "Penny Saver" supermarket that was in Tampa and the "Speedy Roadhog" public service announcements regarding drinking and driving--- there was a series of them and they were hilarious yet serious. WTMP promoted the Black comedian "Flash" who came to Tampa in the 1960's and they also had occasional religious commercials that advertised going to the meeting to "receive your Special Blessing". It was all about the Black community in Tampa and I loved that station! All the records they played were on the old R&B/Soul charts and a lot of it was not heard on other stations in the region. One great example of a song they (exclusively) played was Marvin Gaye's "Take This Heart Of Mine". I heard that song JUST ONCE in 1966 on our car radio while we were going home and I have never forgotten that catchy tune. I never heard that song anywhere else except on Tampa's WTMP. I figured that the radio jingles for WTMP "Soul Radio" were custom-made for them as they were local-sounding and unique. Great radio Memories! -- John
That's really revealing that "Take This Heart Of Mine" was seemingly only played on the Soul station and not the Top 40 station. I don't think that record scored very well chart-wise, which always puzzled me because it's such a dynamic production. But Maybe Motown realized it was stalling because I believe they put out a second mix of the record at some point. I wish I could go back in time and record a ton of hours of WTMP. I've never come across the station in any of my collecting of jingles and airchecks. I do have some PAMS jingles for WLCY posted here though- and for whatever reason, the station seemed to purposely order them recorded with added reverb th-cam.com/video/J-voeWS0gwA/w-d-xo.html You are like a fountain of information about these radio stations. That is completely awesome! I like that you go into details too.
@@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles Hello again! It is concerning that you are not receiving notifications on some of the Replies. I hope you receive this one. Yes, I heard that Marvin Gaye song just once on WTMP and never heard it again anywhere else. I didn't know the name of the song, etc... but a few years ago with TH-cam, I was able to track it down via Gaye's discography because I recognized the music style of the song. The record is uploaded here on YT and is the original one that I remember. If there was any "second mix" of that record I would have recognized it immediately as I am a music purist and know every note of every song. Other Top-40 stations in the Tampa Bay Area (e.g. WLCY, WALT and WKXY) played Motown, etc... but WTMP played a lot of stuff that the others didn't. Ten years ago or more, there was a short video showing someone driving up a long dirt road and at the end of it was a small abandoned building that the uploader said was the old studios of WTMP "Soul Radio"..... I'm sure their Jingles, etc... were all locally-made for them. I'm sure any tapes of programming from those days are long gone unless some listener made recordings privately on a reel-to-reel tape recorder from the radio. Another song that WTMP (exclusively) played was "Don't Be A Drop-Out" by James Brown & the Famous Flames..... Yes, WLCY had those PAMS jingles and they constantly bombarded the listener with them. WLCY was very good but it wasn't my favorite station. It took a while to get used to the PAMS as I came from Cincy where WSAI DID NOT have the PAMS jingles when we lived up there. -- John
Great visuals, tomovox! When did PAMS release this package and what other stations used it? I thought the only R&B-specific imaging they did was around Series 9, from 1958 or so (for KNOK, Ft.Worth/Dallas). This is great stuff...good for today's Retro Soul stations like the independent LPFM that chain owner Radio One is trying to block in DC..R1 is that scared of a 100-watter that will take listeners back when radio was real... and embarrass them in the process! Rev. 3/10/15
Hi King Bee! Thank you- very happy you like the visuals- I tried to do a "shout out" to a few of the great DJs that were part of WVON's history (as well as giving some recognition to a few great Chicago artists.) This wasn't really a standard package. I'm not sure how PAMS worked it but I'm guessing one of the Soul stations approached PAMS about a jingle package and being that many of those stations didn't have a big budget, PAMS cleverly pulled together cuts from older packages that would have a bit more of a "soulful" sound. Being that they were older cuts, the station maybe got a discount of sorts. Now that's sheer speculation. Perhaps other Soul stations heard what PAMS did for one or a few of these and requested PAMS do something similar. Check out the jingles I have for WKND. They had a similar composite package of older/newer cuts. WHAT was unique because they took a lot of cuts from a newer package, Series 34, which actually didn't really sound like Soul muisic, lol. But they blended in cuts from Series 24 and 18, I think, as well. I always wondered why PAMS didn't do an out-an-out Soul Music package- still, Series 37 (The All Sound) had some amazingly gritty, soulful cuts.
Checking out PAMS Series 37 now...thanks, friend! From a Series 27 (Jet Set) fan who grew up hearing it on legendary WAKY, Louisville and Series 18 (Sono-sational) on WKLO, Louisville.
King Bee If you're a fan of Series 27 (and who isn't?) you may be interested in a package done for KALO in Little Rock, Arkansas. They had Series 27, I think in 1970 or so, and they did the whole package with a soul group! I'm guessing 3 men, 2 ladies. If you haven't heard that, I'll see about getting that up and running sometime!

King Bee Will do. It'll be a while, but I'll get it posted for you!
When radio was REAL RADIO!
I miss that era so much sometimes, it HURTS!
