"THE GROOVE LINE" LYRICS
Pack your grip, takin' you on a trip
Ain't no seats, all we got's dancin' feet
Leave your worries behind
'Cause rain shine, don't mind
We're ridin' on the groove line tonight
Ooh Ooh
Ooh Ooh
Catch this train know you'll be glad you came
Hit the track party hard there and back
Leave your worries behind
'Cause rain shine don't mind
We're ridin' on the groove line tonight
Ooh Ooh

Check out the wheels a turnin'
You know we won't stop
We got this boiler burnin'
We're keepin' it hot
So grab your friends, get the train comin' thru
Climb on board, where you leave's up to you
Leave your worries behind
'Cause rain shine don't mind
We're ridin' on the groove line tonight
Ooh ooh
Ooh ooh

Ooh ooh
Leave your worries behind
'Cause rain shine don't mind
We're ridin' on the groove line tonight
Ooh Ooh
Ooh Ooh
Check out the wheels a turnin'
You know we won't stop
We got this boiler burnin'
We're keepin' it hot
So grab your friends
Get the train comin' through
Climb on board
Where you lead is up to you
Leave your worries behind
'Cause rain shine won't mind
We're ridin' on the groove line tonight
Ooh Ooh
We can ride
Rain shine don't mind
We're ridin' on the groove line tonight (repeat and fade).
SONG/VIDEO NOTES
This extended mix features keyboard whiz Rod Temperton on an expanded instrumental section. Harmoniously, you can hear Eric John's beautiful rhythm guitar chords in this section. Music to the ears.
Technically, “The Groove Line” is classified as a disco song. However, its sophisticated R&B funk sound sets it apart from most of the ubiquitous, redundant disco music of the late 70s. Instead of a dreamy jazzy intro like "Boogie Nights", Rod Temperton's genius chord progression is utterly apparent as the song begins with a synth intro that pulsates on the eighths, like a freight train in motion chugging along. I love the intro - so much so that I extended that pulsating synth then added four crash cymbal rolls before moving to the sizzling hi-hats. I also added an 808 sine wave roll-off on the first 3 kick drum hits that sounds great with subwoofers. Turn it up and wake the neighbors!
At the time, synthesizers were new and really evolving - being integrated more and more into popular music with complex arrangements using multiple keyboards. The beauty of Rod’s synth melodies and the spirited complementary vocal harmonies of the Wilder brothers was unmatched. Keith sang with an aggressively masculine edge, while Johnnie had a feather-light smooth touch. He just looks so happy when he sings! Johnnie's falsetto reigns throughout the song, handling tricky chord changes during the chorus with ease.
The drummer, Ernest "Bilbo" Berger, an underrated Jazz/Blues drummer from Czechoslovakia, is one that I list as one of my most influential funk drummers of the 70s. Here he executes a sixteenth note/semi-quaver pattern on the hi-hat that keeps the song grooving. On the chorus he switches to a swing-ish 'double-tap' quarter note close/open hi-hat pattern, that I play with my left hand (open, not crossed). His 1977 Ludwig Vistalite concert toms, perfectly tuned to the notes of the song, were bright and punchy. Barry Blue did a superb job of recording the drum track and mixing them prominently up front in the mix. I tried my best to do justice and match that tom and overall sound in this video.

How many of you have watched this video at least over 20 times? I'm guilty. The drums just sound so damn good.
I watched it a million time .. figure of speech
🙋♀️
It gave me the Funky chills !!
Me
Yup his drums are like xylophones !!
So pleased to say original Heatwave drummer is my family member🙏Amazing Bilbo from Czechoslovakia❤
Ernest Berger 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 very amazing drummer. As a drummer myself I’ve always admired his work and style.
The original drummer of Heatwave is probably the funkiest drummer of all time. No lie. I'm a musician and grew up listening to Heatwave.
The First song I learned as a Bassist was Boogie Nights.
I'm also a lead singer. People can't tell me and Johnnie Wilder apart as Singers.
O,wow he is amazing... they were a very diverse group.
How did he learn funk in Czech land?
When Heatwave first came out I always thought he the best drummer I've ever heard. My brother wrote a songs for Zapp & Roger Troutman. "Computer Love" " I Wanna Be Your Man" "Slow & Easy " etc.
Yup, he did the damn thing. The dude is just plain out raw. Bravo...
Music is timeless, and great songs become classics. Rod and HEATWAVE were brilliant. I'm still amazed how many people love this song after so many decades and I appreciate your comments from all over the world. So please Like, Subscribe, and drop a comment about the song and how it makes you feel. Have a great day, everyone!
I've been hooked on this era of R&B since the mid-70's. Can't shake it. Don't want to!
The drummer 🥁 is on point 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You are good I enjoy listening to you hurt those drums
As a lover of drumming since I was 6 years old an still to this day aged 60 it's a fantastic instrument with so many dynamics how couldn't I love your video.!? You keep on bro 🥁👍😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤SOME GOOD DAYS
You know- I,ve been wathcing this clip for 3 years, and this is the first time I've ever thought to tell you how much it means to mean. Im an ICU nurse and have dealt with all the things during covid. This was what I have watched over and over to- bring me down- deal with it-try to live my life, try to bring me back to humanity. Its like meditation for me. A happy place. Your drumming is hypnotic and spot on, you deal with it all and make it better than it probably ever was to begin with. I really cant express all this has meant to me, and how many times I have drowned in your perfection, while trying to deal with everything else. So, just a heartfelt, Thank You.
Thank you for being a nurse
Thank you!
I feel the same way, it's like a meditation for me!
God bless you and all much love glad your' e here, glad you're there for us thank you
Good on You Wendy.❤

This has to be one of the most bad ass drum lines ever in recorded history of funk Jazz Disco and this white boy has it down pat !!!...so much soul and drum fills I love his high hat work and it gives me gives the chills .
Nothing better than a drummer who sits in the pocket, doesn't overplay, and nails it like the record. Bad ass.
Thanks!
HES A MONSTER ON THE DRUMS,WOW😛
This was the jam back in the day
U are not lying!!!!!❤️💯
His name is Alan badia and he's been playing the drums for a long time. He kills it on the drums.
He's no joke
This is a phenomenal example of why old school disco music still matters!
Got that right!

What a great tribute to one the most underrated drummers, Heatwave's Ernest "Bilbo" Berger.
He was so great!
Poor Ernest criminally underrated even in their videos.
Always loved how he played especially off the To Hot Too Handle and Central Heating albums. RIP.
@@alexrosales1175 when did he pass?
I agree 💯% , unfortunately he wasn't in a lot of the videos . Most drummers get quite a bit of camera time but it didn't seem like they wanted show him because of his size . Just like C& C Music factory
That this drummer is great is without question! That said, HeatWave was one hell of a group in 1978! I enjoyed their music on WAGL many times that year!
This man can play the hell out of these drums...He is an excellent drummer....WOW!!!!
I never really appreciated "the drums" until I heard an entire set played. WOW! JUST W O W!!!
Yeah, there's quite a bit going on with the percussive sounds.
absolutely flawless and on point..this cat is a total badass on the drums .. I blown away..two thumbs up
Brother man holding it down on the drums
No chit
Dude. You KILLED this! 🔥🔥🔥💯💯❗️❗️❗️ I didn’t see you miss A beat!! It was such a joy to watch you slaughter this classic! 🎉 I do hope that you are exercising your gift somewhere so others can have the pleasure of hearing you play live. 🙂
Who else is back for the 899th time? 🥁
He's not bad on a straight-line bicycle tide, either.
Sorry; bicycle RIDE
Me. This is one of my favorite songs. Love the instruments.
Give it up for the DRUMMER!!!!!! Love it 🥰
Awesome bad to the bone
Absolutely!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I was 15 when my Dad who passed a few weeks ago introduced me to the 45” of this song. That’s right...in ‘92 I was bumping this “45 on a record player daily. 🔊🔊 🥁 🥁🎶🎶🔥🔥
Remarkable drum set and cover! 🤜🏾🤛🏾
Awesome. Thanks Treves.
Sorry for your loss friend ..I know that pain, lost my dad in 2012 and I still miss him...
@@Italiangypsy1965 appreciate it and I too am sorry for your loss. I come back to this set often, as it NEVER gets old.
Brilliant! I've returned to this video often over the past seven or eight years whenever I needed a hit of funk adrenaline and it never fails to deliver.
The funk is strong in this one.
The 70's was one of the greatest era in American music !!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely!
Yes it was, and I played in band with music like this, great times!!!
Most definitely!! ✌🐢
I would give everything up today to get everything back then!!!!
these guys are awesome...…. we had the best music in the 80's!!!!!!

I can not stop watching this dude he is so good and not missing a beat
I love this version. I can watch and listen to it over and over. What is his name?
The best thing Heatwave did. This is SUPERB. Great chops
Thanks!
Actually Ernest "Bilbo" Berger is the original drummer from England. He added the jazz sound to Heatwave. He passed away September of 2019 . He was a heck of a drummer that did not get enough attention . We Love You Bilbo
Very under-rated. A master of his craft and he deserves all the credit, RIP Ernest Bilbo Berger.
One more time, I'm dancing to lose weight...this White boy gets me uo and moving...I luv him
Lol!!!!
Are you kidding me? Heatwaves Grooveline?
I love it. FREAKING AWESOME. Keep up the killer work.
That's a man who completes his tasks. Congrats
You really don't appreciate the drumming until you actually see it being performed. You sir are bad ass, and this is one of my favorite songs by Heatwave. Thanks!
Thanks!
Keep coming back to listen to this , seems to get better every time

Thanks! I love playing it.
We did it! 5 MILLION views! Thank you to EVERYONE over the years for your support of this great song and keeping Heatwave alive and well. Cheers!
Hey there, you are really an awesome person of talent. Watching you play took me back to junior high 77-79 when I learned to play clarinet in the band and continued til 11th grade. There was a kid named Jimmie Morris learning to play the drums and all my other classmates learning to play their instruments as well. It seemed as though I was learning each instrument as they learned theirs like the different positions of the trombone, the valves of the trumpet, french horn and tuba, keys of the flute which my sister played. I have great memories of my wonderful band teacher Mr Raymond Settle and I can still remember all the names of my classmates and the instruments they played. Just watching you play took me to one of the few good parts of my childhood cause I got pregnant at 15 and after that all I could do was survive for me and my baby, graduate high school in 1982 and then college in 1992. Thank you for this . PLEASE BE A PART OF MY LIFE and respond.
U made it look so easy and a whole lotta fun. Thanks, I would have paid $50 to see it live!
Dude you're the reason I come on here! Bad Ass Man. I could imagine you playing instead of the real drummer man! No disrespect to the ogs that played the drums for these songs, but you're that good!
I think I've listened to it about 50.
Congrats and cheers!! 😎
This fucking Man can play the hell out of these drums best I've ever heard just like the original song 👍👍👍👍
Greg McCurtis he's better than that drummer in in a gadda 's vids. Iron Butterfly
That song was ahead of its time. Wow
Unbelievable he is one of a kind the best
Greg McCurtis OKAY? WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW
The best
It's mid March 2019. I was stationed in Germany when this came out; appreciated the groove then and even more now because not only can you hear that most funky drum beat but seeing this very cool drummer with his equally cool sunglasses and driving gloves is extraordinarily smooth:-) 5 out of 5 stars........................
this band was stationed in Germany too
My one year old baby is literally clapping along to this video 🎉❤
Probably my favorite version of this🎉
You have more views than Heatwave does but I love how you show respect and include the group in your video.
With total due respect, Heatwave was the bomb.

Heatwave drummer was a white guy 😉
Ran across this video years ago and probably watched it a hundred times over the years. Guy nails it!
Watcha Mate. Heatwave had no colour. Just blinding musicians....+ Johny, The Sound of Sunshine and Sir Rod The Leg End.
The writer was white. He also wrote for Michael Jackson. He was part of Heatwave...
That roll at 2:17 is amazing. Those are perfectly tuned Tom Toms. A lot of effort went into setting up and tuning that drum set.
That’s how good the 70s were
Yessir.
This was fabulous 👌 👏 👍 😍 💖
Every few years I look at this video again. And it never fails.....AWESOME video.
This guy is one hell of a drummer, it's absolutely mind blowing that someone can play with such extreme power, with a set of powerful drums, dynamic!!!
When he does that thing during the breakdowns, that is NOT as easy as it looks! Then the tom rolls???? 😳 And what the hell was Rod Temperton SMOKING back then??? 🤣🤣🤣
White boy got skills too much skills he just killing it

Hey, thanks for that. And yes, I've met a TON of new music lovers and great people because of this video. It transcends time. Young and old dig it. I hope it keeps on going. And the next one, Boogie Nights, will be even better.
