  • I was thinking about not including the make & model of the mic in the video title, but I didn't think that would help anyone looking for a "review" (not that this is one) of this mic for this use case.
The audio you hear in the video is processed live using a combination of analog outboard equipment and DSP in a MOTU UltraLite mk4 going directly into Audition, then laid into Premiere for editing.
Absolutely no post processing was done whatsoever - not even turning it up or down at all. This is what I sound like live.
Notes on the RE20 chain using the Rane MS-1 & Symetrix 528E:
The 528E is set up in a way that lets you use 1/4" jumpers to reconfigure the order of the different stages, and you can go in and out at any point(s) you want. Like if you had two mics and two external preamps and wanted to use the 528's compressor for one, and the EQ for another, you could do that because you can go in & out of those stages independently. You can also chain them together in whatever order you want. Pretty sweet.
The RE20 hits the MS-1 first, then goes into the EQ stage of the 528E via XLR to 1/4" cable. From there it jumps to the de-esser, hits the comp, and comes out of the comp directly into the interface.
By default, it would hit the compression before the EQ, but I like to put the comp on it after EQ. The preamp and output stages of the 528E are completely bypassed. The Rane unit replaces the preamp stage ( it is markedly cleaner), and I didn't need another knob for output gain into the interface. The only gain knob that does anything in the chain is on the Rane MS-1.
