  • I picked up an impact driver at Harbor Freight. Is it too cheap to get the job done? What is in the box, and will it hold up to being hit with a hammer?

    I have this tool and it works well. It even works with impact sockets in a pinch. I think it’s one of many HF tools that is worth the at home mechanic having in their toolbox.

      Great to hear! I actually managed to break the two shorter Philips bits when working on the back brakes. The direction got changed by accident and it was trying to tighten instead of loosen. Pilot error, I suppose.

      PS: I know you likely don't want to scratch your precious bits, but there's a hardness testing kit that's likely not too expensive where you scrape with picks, 1 - 9 or something, and it tells you how hard the steel is within' some degree or error. I wonder if the old ones are better or worse. Maybe someday if a bit breaks, you can give them a scratch?

    If L is to loosen, then compared to the user guide neglected in the beginning, I think at 2:54 you say and then set it the wrong way, to tighten.

    • @TheFixitShed

      Hard to tell and I don't remember from 2 years ago, but it did loosen the screws.

      I’m actually here to figure out the adjustment. The instructions are pretty garbage. Do I turn the bit end clockwise or CCW to loosen?

    • @ArtoKV
      @ArtoKV ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@negativeindustrial Yes, the most important thing (and why I watched this) was not clear. Looking at the instructions in the beginning of this video, and some more videos, and doing some experiment with my Biltema model: L or Left is counterclockwise to open the normal threads. This is when the tool is ready in place and you're facing the spot to be hit. It means turning the handle CCW when it is in place, not the bit. To "take away the loose movement" before the hit.

    • @negativeindustrial
      @negativeindustrial ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArtoKV
      Thank you, sir. If I am understanding you properly, I am to position the tool at the screw to be loosened and turn the handle CCW just before striking it. This should loosen the screw. Am I correct?

  • @wayneo7307
    @wayneo7307 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You're Supposed to Turn It While Hitting It At The Same Time .

      @TheFixitShed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup

    • @richb2229
      @richb2229 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No the impact turns it. Turning it by hand does almost nothing. The reason the rubber guard is slightly loose is to keep the tool from twisting your hand. I would also the use of either a heavy dead low hammer or a heavy ball peen hammer. The type of hammer used in the video isn’t the proper kind for this tool. Injury could have occurred.

    • @TheFixitShed
      @TheFixitShed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to twist lightly. Just enough to keep pressure (or preload) so that when you hit it with a hammer, there isn't any wasted movement. You can't twist hard with this tool anyway, as the grip slips. Dead blow hammer would have been my choice, if I had one. Another trip to HF... :)

    This thing is not very good. Hit it all you want, it may turn, if you hold tension on it, and your tongue is pointed in the right direction. It is excellent for destroying smaller screws. Good tools don't cost 10 dollars.

      You need to 1. Insert impact into head of screw and 2. Turn down and counter clockwise until you can't feel it go loose anymore THEN you strike it I own this very tool And I just took the carburetor off my suzuki fa50 with it
