- The VW Golf R MK7..... is it as good as people think??
People that know us know we are not the biggest VAG fans out there, but we take this lightly modified Golf R up through twisties to see why everyone loves them. With around 380bhp, this Golf R seems to be a more rare spec with 3 doors and the fact it is not blue.
This is a great example with its beautiful Forged Carbon parts, some which are super rare and custom made.
Can we see what all the fuss is about and why they are so popular?

Hard to not like the R! Super good daily driver for canyon drives and the occasional track day. MQB platform is also very tunable to your liking
I just ordered myself a mk8 R 20 years, cannot wait till it finally arrives :). This 7R looked good but to be honest i would pick the 5 door for a usable daily.

IMO, the three door gives cleaner lines and has that more genuine hatch look.
During Covid I tried finding an MK6 three door, either it was on the other side of the world or run down to it's bare tires.
Just talking about three vs five, imo, but I understand where you are coming from in practicality.
the mk8R is waaaaaay better than the mk7R. I owned a mk7R and now a mk8R.

I bought 7R DSG 3-door in deep black painting and its great! 5k km so far, but I really love this car. I used to have many other bigger engines, such as V6 or V8 but this CJXC is perfect for daily but I can also go to a track sometimes.
You are right! They are very usable cars in every situation!

Got an s3 8v saloon a year and a half ago and i don't ever want to let it go, looking for another daily so i can park this up and save it for weekends.
Great video, I own one and love it but wish i had gone for the DSG. Sounds like this one has a Haldex problem because in the dry even with 380Bhp shouldnt break traction. My R ended up having a brand new haldex and control module at the cost of £3500, luckily under warranty which came with the car.

I love my ‘19 Golf R, I’ve had 6 VWs and there’s not another car on the market I’d rather have than this one. I don’t like the interior of the new R, and I prefer the feel of my car to any of the competition. Plus I get 30mpg on a good day!
They really are great cars all around! I'm not a fan of the new R (granted, I haven't driven one) but they just don't do it for me.
30mpg is pretty decent for a car that keep up with some modern supercars!

I must say that I really love my black Golf 7R DSG. It such a quick, supple, relaxing, beautifully balanced car with addictive catapult like 4 wheel drive traction exiting corners. It is not a razor sharp track focused vehicle by any means, more the kind of car you can drive to 90% of it's handling limits for as long as you want, and still remain fresh and relaxed at the end of the drive. Leave all the driving aids on, and I would go so far as to say that you would have to be an idiot to lose control of one of these.
That's a very good way of looking at it in fairness. I have an Mx5 track car that is so raw you have to be in the mood to drive it. Where as the Golf R you can drive in any mood, on any day and still be happy & comfortable.
And yes, the grip & power pulling you out of the corners is impressive!

GOLF indeed is a very interesting car, You hate it so badly when you haven’t try it yet, You love it when you tried it.
My dream affordable car, i'm planning on buying one next year and tunning it a little. I also don't like pops and bangs like you guys do, I'm more of a only stage tune kind of guy with a good exhaust to let out some bang sometimes but that's all. Also not planning on going further than a stage 2 with 400hp, it's already insane to have 400hp in this.
I've found these chassis handle a stage 1 really well. Stage 2++ you need to look at suspension, brakes, wheels & tyres. If you're doing it for actual good driving.
Bang for your buck do a stage 1 and rip up 80% of cars you seen on 'a' roads and probs 100% of them on small twisty 'b' roads

I like the carbon but I'd have it painted same as the car, does my head in the different panels looks like it's been in an accident and been replaced with random bits lol. I still like his tasteful mods like OEM plus.
got a mk7 r -struggling to think of an all round upgrade. remains my dream car, but may mod it a bit later

i bought a golf r estate 7.5 even better with the digital dash and readouts it performs just like a saloon but even bigger and keeping it stock with no pops and bangs lol 😁
The EA888 motor is just another generation of technology. 100% out performs the EA113 2.0TFSI motors from the 6R. Im a huge S3 8P fan but will admit that the S3 8V is a far more superior version.
Im the type of guy to buy an r, stage 2+ it (yesit was inly a matter of time I would say the word "stage" lol) and make it look like a regular golf on the outside minus the tires.
😂 it's a personal pet peeve of mine, I just don't get the whole "stage" thing lol

Unfortunately, a lot of the time they get into the wrong hands and everytime they are seen, they are being ragged to hell & back up & down built up areas popping & banging.
We have never been the biggest fans of the VAG platform as they tend to be a bit numb, and ironically, do everything a bit too well! I like to feel completely on control of a car.
But after featuring this one, I understand the hype behind them.

I never known what to think of these cars as well. Guess you have to drive it to make your own mind up.
Honestly man, we didn't like them. They still wouldn't be my first choice but I now understand why people love them.
I strongly advise driving one if you get the chance!

On a side note, I used to hate DSG cars and the sound they made. However bought a 2.0tsi scirocco DSG, and fell in love with it, not on the level of a golf R, but still plenty of fun despite being more modern than im used too😅
They are the best, bar my gti lol
You want a real 306 bhp drivers car go for a e93 335i manual sport 2007. I got 1 in black and its loads of fun & drama,never mind the tuning potential.😉

@@accelerateyoutube from a dig a golf r would beat a mk3 3.5 cupra. But once rolling with less drivetrain loss and much less weight it is actually quicker. Stage 2 cupras will do 8 second 100-200

they are pretty much only any good once rolling on a long straight stretch
most impressive cupra ive come up against was an estate, not even sure what it was, it was it was a pretty new model

the 3 door was not available in america , 5dr was the only option
They stopped making manual 7R 3 doors around 2017.
Ive got a 3 door manual in red running 400bhp absolute animal,
Had a mk3 focus rs previously & couldnt wait to get rid of it absolutely cheap & nasty the interior & ride quality was embarrassing 😢
3 door, red, manual is a very nice spec choice!
I've heard a few people complain about Ford interiors.

@@accelerateyoutube the exhaust note of the focus was brilliant & it was obviously very fast, But unless the road was perfectly smooth it was horrendously stiff & bumpy, I had the bucket seats option & after 30-40 minutes I was glad to to get out for a break.
Absolutely gutted because I've been a huge fast Ford fan since I was a young kid.
Sold the focus after 3 months just way too many negatives, drunk fuel like an alcoholic & I have no words for the interior "quality".
I've had the golf r for 5 years now & it still puts a smile on my face,
Its been lowered, handbuilt exshaust, Sachs clutch, stage 2 map, wheels & tyres etc etc,
Doesn't look anywhere near as good as the focus but is a better car in everyway otherwise 😁

This is why we do not work in "stages"; they don't make sense. We just keep track of the modifications we carry out on our cars.
The owner, Jason hasn't had it dynoed yet but 380 is what he was told as a rough estimate.

mine's running 380 at stage 2 aswell, the block can handle around 400-430 stock, so if you push anything near that there's a chance of things going bad
