I study optics so I wouldn't really have an excuse not to know L.A.S.E.R. (or before those were discovered there was MASER, which was functionally similar but amplified microwave radiation. The magnetron in your microwave for instance is a less directed form of maser)
There are a lot of acronyms that evolve into a word. Laser and scuba are good examples. Radar is also one. There is a word for when it happens I think.

Edit: Did some looking up, apparently it USED to be Suburban Utility Vehicle but they later changed the S to Sport for marketing. The marketing worked.
