    Really love the optical sorter, I have seen similar in sorting plastic for recycling.
    Bet the maintenance crew have fun keeping all the kit working, corrosive, abrasive, dusty etc, and of course the odd rogue item , like a lump of hard rock, or one of the maintenance crews wrench, will find its way in and cause havoc.
    Good video ,thanks

    Is rock salt non renewable?
    Is it bad for the environment to spread on the ground?

    • @andreaquadrati
      @andreaquadrati 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, harvesting rock salt in the end. . just turns the seas saltier, as the water cycle will bring it there eventually. It can be renewable with artificial methods, but can be bad if the seas become too salty

    • @Pete856
      @Pete856 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Andrea Quadrati Nah, the seas are so massive and contains so much salt already that the runoff from salt on the road makes no difference at all. Then when you factor in how much fresh water is coming from melting glaciers and the likes, the oceans are actually becoming less salty......until the next ice age.

    • @andreaquadrati
      @andreaquadrati 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +69aussieguy Depends. Sure, oceans are big. But here we speak of more restricted zones. Seas and lakes are more likely to be affected.

    • @mariusa5754
      @mariusa5754 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could sea salt be used to de-ice roads? I guess it would be too expensive because you'd have to boil it to get salt out, or are there any other methods of removing salt from salt water?

    • @andreaquadrati
      @andreaquadrati 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Marius Ammann Solar salt. Or leftovers from water desalinization. Also sea salt is not usually that expensive. They dry it off in large basins using sunlight and concentrating it until it forms crystals. Still affordable

    Can't really ride bikes during the winter here, it's difficult enough to walk to be honest. We usually just put gravel on our roads, but it doesn't help much. Especially not when it's warm one day and the snow melts a bit, and then freezes again during the night.
    The next morning the sidewalks are covered in ice, you could quite literally put on ice-skates and skate around town.

    • @TheGeekwad

      Here in Minnesota, a state known for its "10,000 lakes", we use too much salt on our roads. Not only does this usually mean that plants and vegetation near roadsides are brown, dry, or dead, but studies are finding that the levels of salinity (salt in the water) in some of these lakes are getting dangerously high. I did a research paper on the topic and some experts say that many of these lakes will not be able to sustain life within the next few decades if we keep salting the shit out of our roads. But hey, that's a problem for a future generation, am I right?

They took them apart and down 1 big piece at a time and then reassembled them in this subterranean maze. Over the years I’ve called the mine and asked if I could get a tour again so I could take my kids down there the responses is usually “are you kidding“. They told us we could take a sample so we got off the tram and people picked fist size pieces of salt but my brother and I figured that since we last people we took a 75 pound piece of salt. They didn’t even care. We had it for years and I hate to say it may have been used in the driveway. Stupid kids that we were.

    They caught that man on camera stealing salt dust lol. I used to work at a salt factory, it paid like shit but we made extra money on the side
    by taking handfuls of salt dust, you wouldn't think it would get you much but there's a big demand and most corporations won't sell to individuals. If a scientist or whoever wants some then they can't buy it, they have to make it, and it's hard to make it as fine as the factory stuff. A few grams of the stuff could get you a couple hundred, but it depends who's buying really. Most of us used chewing tobacco so to sneak the salt out we'd pack a fat lip of the stuff and no managers or supervisors would notice. They have to look in out pockets to know we weren't taking any, it was actually a law in my state that they had to examine all of us before we left the building. Some other factory didn't do it and they got shut down so fucking quick, which was great for us because then we were the only salt factory in the state and that meant less people we're stealing and selling salt to individuals. If I stuck at that place I could have retired 20 years ago, but I got caught, a new employee snitched on a few of us and we were all fired the next day. No one liked that little rat, had teeth like a rat too, no one liked home since he was an ass and I guess he was jealous of our friend group. I looked the guy up on Facebook recently and he's part of some pyramid scheme, multi level marketing scam, some shit like that.
    He's not the one in charge of the scheme, he's the one being scammed. He was always a gullible idiot, the stories I have about fucking with that guy, but that's for another time?

    • @LouSaydus
      @LouSaydus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      only so much salt can dissolve in water and enter solution. It would have to rain A LOT before it would cause the salt to wash away. Basically you get a crust on the top of the pile of 100% saturation of the rain water that then soaks down onto the salt below and forms a cake/clay like substance and keeps the salt in place. The little bit of water that does run off the pile is insignificant in the grand scheme of the mine, maybe a few tons per year at max.

      KrisRaps Simply put they first decide which ones are black and need to be removed using some cameras and special lights. Then the black ones get shot in a different place using compressed air(so they basically push it somewhere else with air) so they don't go to the same place as the white ones. Since it's an automated machine it's really fast so the compressed air shots doesn't get in the way of other salts. It's definitely impressive work. :)
      You can see just after that part that they note that some black parts do escape the optical sorter but since it's road salt it's fine. The ideal situation is to just get rid off as much of the black stuff as possible.

    Salting the roads is terrible, though. Wreaks not only cars, but also bicycles and other motor vehicles. Riding my bike to school through winter is a pain, since it's practically useless by the end of it.

      @@kimr8371 True, but sand goes back into the enviroment as it's being used. And the kind of sand you're talking about is too fine for road gritting, that sand is used in concrete construction.
