You'd think it'd reach out and grab you. Now, the only thing I see that could be taken wrong is the line saying "a guard and a sad old Padre". Some might hear God instead of guard and if it's heard correctly it makes a big difference in the meaning of the song. So yes, it's a prisoner dreaming of his hometown and all the people that he knew there. He is to be executed the following morning and then he'll touch the green, green grass of home.
I'm not sure that young people of today listen to songs in the same way as we did. I'm 71 and very fortunate to have grown up during this period of music. My hope is that youngsters listen and like this music then try to make songs that continue being good music.
