During the early 70’s my father really played Tom Jones doing this song, Dad said he felt the song had been written for him because he was the only one of 13 children born to Mississippi sharecroppers who finished school and earned his masters degree from a major university. His accomplishments took him far away from his home and people. Dad died suddenly in 1972 at the age of 40. We were living across the continent from Ellisville Miss. where he was born and his siblings were. My mother brought him back to Mississippi to be buried. I asked the Baptist minister to have this song during his service but he strongly disapproved...not in Gods house he said. Just seconds into dads service my great aunt Miss Eulalie stood up interrupting that minister, walked to the piano and began playing this song. When Miss Eulalie finished the last note, she stood up looked that minister in the eye and said so everyone could hear, “the good Lord understands even if you don’t.”
Tom Jones' version was Elvis' favorite one. He had Memphis DJ play it over andd over and over. Thanks for your take on this emotional song. One of Tom's many hits.
Tom's had alot of friends and he always mentions he good Elvis PRESLEY. Sammy Davis shared friendships with alot of tha era.. BLESS AĹ OF THEM. R.I.P. 😇
I had totally forgotten this song! So beautiful ! Found myself singing along! Didn't know so many covers by the greats. No wonder I remember it. I loved watching his show.His show & Andy Williams, Judy Garlands, Sonny & Cher shows were all vehicles for singers of the day.
Tom Jones didn't have his show then,but he was always on TV. He was high in demand.We loved watching him perform. Tom did this song the best. One country singer just read the lyrics like a poem on the record..
He didn't say God, he said GUARD, the prison guard who is going to walk with the old padre (priest/minister) and take Tom(the prisoner) from the 4 gray walls of his cell to the execution chamber. Then his body will be sent back home. His family will come meet him and bury him (be)neath the Green Green Grass Of Home. I remember asking my Mum what did the story mean when I was maybe 4yrs old and then crying every time I heard it after that.

To miss that is not to have heard this song at all.
