    Random question: Do you ever feel paranoid with constantly emersing yourself in self defense? Do you ever feel like you're always on the defense or looking over your shoulder even with friends around? Great videos by the way! Keep it up!

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's actually the opposite! I worry less! :)

    • @Msosbog
      @Msosbog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with Sensei, though for me that didn't come until later in my training. I had to have confidence in both what I was learning and in my ability to apply what I've learned in an expeditious manner. Exhaustive training and experience that resulted in true gains brought about a kind of peace or ease with it all, but before that I was super paranoid (great neck and cardio workouts being paranoid and aware 😁).
      I honestly suffer from (or used to "suffer", now I manage it) high levels of anxiety that would have me so anti-social and near agoraphobic that it resulted in depression among other ailments. I was truly blessed at the time, for at the height of this I had a great instructor who told me to try and channel all of that "energy" into more training. So for me, immersion actually helped calm me down and gave me the opportunity to seek balance. Now, like Sensei Ando, I worry less. But everyone is different and has to work through things a little different at times, so if you're struggling with that I feel for you! Just remember to take a breath and be patient with yourself, if you don't quit one day you'll reach zanshin. If you're not struggling with it and was only asking an intellectual question, kudos! It's a great question indeed! In all your training don't forget to train the mind!☺ Stay safe, all the best to you!🙏

      @nicthemickatx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole point of learning self defense is so you use your muscle memory without having to think about it. That usually gives people peace of mind because they have confidence in their own self reliance.

      I've actually seen it, and tbh I don't care if you do believe me or not. My world is radically different than yours. Here we don't have many guns so people fight with knives and most of the time they are untrained and doing it as a mean of intimidation, long story short they don't have a firm grip but are still dangerous to charge at.
      You can literally throw rocks from afar and sooner or later he will drop it.

      Oh and a friendly tip, never wrap the hand into any weapon because if they grab the weapon they will disable your hand and you will be left with only one hand to block the incoming blows or stabs.
      If you see a knife just run away as fast as you can, if you cornered, pull out your own knife, face the opponent and try reverse out of there and get away.
      You only get 10 points for avoiding the situation, after that there are just degrees of loosing for both parties, there are no winners if you actually engage in the fight, just two losers, trust me I have had my face stitched back together by a doctor more times than I can remember.
      Its really much smarter to put your pride in your pocket and just get away, I have to wear glasses now from blows in both my eyes in two different situations, one was in a full contact competition and the other was on the street, it was the toe of a boot that went into my eye after a running in head butt (I was blinded by a torch) which knocked me out. I nearly lost the sight in that eye, if you can avoid a fight rather leave if you can, the damage done lasts for the rest of your life.

    The thing is that surely the attacker could just cover up and enter, take a hit off the belt, and start stabbing you. It's a deterrent but ultimately, once you hit them once the momentum is gone so is it really enough of a threat to keep them back considering they only have to take one shot to close the distance?

    1. Dont eat meat (violent death karma) or hurt any creatures. Watch where you walk. The universal laws will stalk you for redemption.
    2. Avoid dangerous situations. Keep your head down, turn the other cheek. Humble people rarely incite anger in others.
    3. Be able to sprint flat out for 800m+ Always wears trainers and never have a full stomach.
    4. Wear a belt and practice moves with it incase you are surrounded.

      That's a valid point though. A lot of aggressors will just take a hit sometimes in order to close the distance. If all the belt is being used for is an implement of pain, one must consider that not everyone feels pain the same...Add to that chemical substances and/or phisiological conditions under stress, or rage, all that belt is doing is giving them the opportunity they need to open up your meat shirt. No easy way to defend a knife attack, just scary stuff.

    Hi Sensei, don't know how I missed this vid. That's TH-cam for you, I guess.
    Good vid, again. However, I must respectfully disagree with what Mr. Drossos said at 1:45, the part where 'trying to get all fancy with the belt and wrapping the belt around the wrist and all wouldn't work.'
    The thing is, it might not work for HIM, but it might work beautifully for someone else. Yes, it takes a lot of practice to get right, and in execution might not succeed, but that's true for any move, isn't it? For example, you might send a jab to get the opponent to duck or dodge, but instead of doing that he just takes your light hit and swings a right cross at your face because you so kindly confirmed the distance for him. Just because someone says something, doesn't mean it's a given.
    I get why Mr. Drossos says to not bother with those moves. He's teaching people how to survive, and his particular audience might not devote that much time to practicing with blades. However, it must be said that blade arts and counter-blade arts are actually very deep, and what is being spoken about here scratches but the surface. To not recognize that the arts run deeper is, in my opinion, an injustice in itself.
    Silat is a blade art, and for the school I belong to - Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia - one of the counter-blade arts is called "seni cindai". This is a Malay word, and 'cindai' is pronounced "chin-dye". It covers the use of scarves, cloth, belts, plastic bags and similar. Seni cindai is not only used defensively, but also offensively. Some moves are actually lethal, so it's a highly-ranked art, and mostly not taught to beginners. You could see something similar in action if you watch "The Accountant", starring Ben Affleck.
    I realize that for some people, that sounds like more trouble than it's worth it, which I guess might be true if you're a casual practitioner. However, in Silat Seni Gayong, there is a separate syllabus for each type of blade, and if memory serves me right, there are six general types of blades. Stubby and hooked (kerambit), normal length knives, dagger (keris), machete, long machete, and sword. I get this feeling I might have overlooked and left out something.
    Anyway, my point is that there are people out there who have devoted their lives to learning the art of blades, toying around with the minor characteristics of each blade type so as to tease out every gram of impact. To say that one counter-blade style "wouldn't work" would be a disservice to all who are interested in martial arts, self defence, or just learning about the world.
    Again, forgive me, Sensei, for ranting on your vid like this. Thank you so much, and keep em coming, I learn so much from you.

    They touch on some good points... IMHO while the belt isn't a bad idea per se (except that maybe it requires 2 hands to remove and they can rush/stab you while you're trying to remove it), if I was trying to stab someone I wouldn't be deterred for one second if someone was swinging a belt, I would just rush in, hook a limb with the non-stabbing hand and stab stab stab. Just my 2 cents.
    That being said, you've made some bad choices if your weapon of choice is a belt. You should always carry the most effective legal weapon in your jurisdiction that you can...Gun, knife, pepper spray etc. Be practiced and know how to use it in various scenarios/distances.

    I can assure you that the belt can use for parrying but without tying it. Its like holding a stick in both ends to parry a thrust. I remember using a small chain with a small padlock on the other end. it is destructive when it hit the coconut tree or banana trunk it will make a penetrating dent. the same with buckle especially the solid metal. Ill go for the side of the head as primary target; hit the wrist area of the free hand of the knife attacker whenever he extend it. I tried it hitting the end of a tree branch.

    I doubt a belt would fully stop a knifewielding attacker though. I was sceptical at first about the negativity towards this method, but I accidently hit the side of my head practising the belt twirl, yeah, it did hurt. But under adrenaline the attacker might not feel the initial impact.

      @DeMac10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A punch has much more concussive force than a belt with no buckle, thats just a fact, it is backed up with your entire body. I doubt a belt would knock anyone out unless its got a big texas buckle, but you would cause some strong swelling and bleeding, gives better RANGE, which is paramount, and is a good distraction. I'd just tuck my chin and charge in if i was the attacker though. Id like to see a video of "live" sparring with this and see how it turns out (of coursr protective equipment like a motorcycle helmet for the assailant). Hell, maybe I'll make one and upload it as a response. I definitely feel if the assailant charges, the belt swing will get stuffed unless you have flawless lateral movement, step to the side, pivot, and swing the belt, like a check-hook in boxing, or a counter slash in sword fighting

  • @jimmywells33

    Great video! I've been following both of you for awhile now, and like you both. Question: If you have the belt wrapped around your hand like that and he grabs the belt, doesn't that also trap your hand? Then what?

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always a pro and a con, right? :) I'm still more worried about the knife than the belt hand. Plus, if he's holding me, I'm holding him. We're even.

    • @michaelw7867
      @michaelw7867 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ando Mierzwa My concern about his grabbing the belt would be that he still has the knife, and can pull me into the knife strikes. Even if an opportunity should arise for me to escape and run, having the belt wrapped twice around my wrist would prevent that. Let me make another suggestion. Instead of wrapping the belt twice around the wrist, just wrap it once around the hand (rather than the wrist). That still gives you a superior grip should he grab the belt and try to pull it out of your hand. But if you need to release the belt quickly, you can do so by simply rotating your hand and releasing the belt.

    Belt = Improvised Flail
    How to block someone with a belt?
    Let the leather part hit your arm and let the momentum of the buckle to assist you in grabbing the belt. The wielder of the belt who actually ties it your way would just get stuck together in a short distance with the opponent unable to escape. RIP the guy who defends with a belt like this.

      You need to make some videos! :)

    • @DeMac10
      @DeMac10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndoMierzwa this is actually a concern of mine with using a belt like a flail. Similar to stuffing a roundhouse kick by moving in, I could see an attacker timing the belt swing so it stuffs the attack, allowing him to stab. Distance control seems paramount with this belt technique, though a well timed step in from the assailant is all he needs. Would still rather the belt in my right hand for range, my left hand can trap/block, especially if i wrap it with my shirt. Its all about time allowed though. I doubt i would even have time to get my belt off or my shit off if someone pulled a knife on me, my first response if I'm in close is attempt to block and strike at the same time, then book it or hit the groin. As a boxer it's weird translating some skills to self defense, while others, like a parry and punch to the nose come instinctively and the training adds confidence. Still, if one has the time to grab their belt and wield it, why not right, great video!
