Tobin Heath and Christen Press Answer Your Paris Questions - “The Mailbag” | Episode 4

  • Tobin and Christen are back with an episode that gets to the heart of everything from the Paris Olympics to Manchester United- and of course, the sports. First, they discuss the unfair displacement of the Manchester United women’s team, the duo’s former club, and how owners like Michelle Kang are setting the bar for what’s possible in the women’s game with teams like the Washington Spirit and London City Lionesses.
    Later, Tobin and Christen take questions from the audience in a fun new segment called the Paris Mailbag (yes, there is a ‘bag of mail’ in this episode.) From Korbin Albert being named to the USWNT roster to Alex Morgan being left off - and some fun Olympic anecdotes in between - the conversation is all real talk…and a bit of spilled tea.

    The segment on Man U is absolute gold. The season Tobin joined was a big deal for the WSL and then to see Man U explode into not just top 4 but top of the table for a time was huge for the club too. Casey Stoney was so right to call upon these two for all the reasons mentioned. The club has sunk since that first spark but when it returns (which, it will), it will owe a big debt to these folks for the jumpstart. Frikkin legends.

    As a lifelong United fan who remembers being elated when these two classy players came to Manchester, I welcome these stories of what it was like, even though they make me deeply sad. I love the club, but its lack of commitment to the women's game has always been shameful and embarrassing. All I can hope is that despite a poor start in this area, the new regime will take a good long look at it and decide to fully commit to the women. Christen and Tobin were a blessing to watch, although I remember some frustrating injury issues limited Tobin's appearances in particular. Best of luck to you both, and thank you.

    Disappointing to hear how bad things were at United when you were there, some of it we knew but even worse than I thought. The first half of the season was brilliant, and I can’t believe they wouldn’t further invest in January, if they did, I think United could have quite a few more trophies. Thank you for all you did for the girls, sharing your experience helped them all grow into the top players they are today and thank you for the joy you gave us when we were stuck inside during COVID. As fans we will keep pushing the club to do better, every team who wears the United should be there to win and little girls as well as boys should be able to dream about playing for Manchester United and winning every domestic and European trophies to create history for the women’s team in the tradition of the once great club I’ve supported since I was 9.

    Really interesting to know that Press and Heath were brought in to Manchester United for reasons beyond just being a player. Lots of talk about the world catching up in terms of play, but it seems US is still ahead when it comes to all the off the pitch stuff (although still so much more work to do). Christen's concern and comment about those boys seeing the women right across from them not being treated well at such a young and impressionable age was very poignant. Hats off to Stoney for fighting the good fight, especially after this past week.

    Hello Tobin and Christen. Maybe it was the stories from northern England that made me like this show more? I walked to university under grey skies, not far from an old Manchester United training ground.
    I still enjoy the US stuff too, having spent 3 months touring your country some years back.
    The recent video of two Spanish defenders at Manchester City is such a contrast to United, with City's modern facilities.
    Ella Toone got a Hollywood style star in Wigan, but it feels like she will be training with a portaloo as locker room. No wonder there are suggestions of her going to Barcelona.
    I have watched women's football for years, but only discovered TH-cam a couple of years back. I always try to add something positive in comments, as there was so much negative rubbish in comments when I started watching. Attitudes are changing in UK because of the effort put in, that you described. I watch other European countries' channels and it is starting to get better.
    Keep going!

    As a ManU fan it has been disappointing the treatment of the women’s team especially given their most recent success. I hoped Sir Jim would turn around the women’s team but that doesn’t seem the case. I’m worried they will disband the women’s team again as it is clear their only focus is on the men’s team. The women’s team needs to come together and speak out against the club. Just like the USWNT has done against equal pay. That is the only way this club will change.

      And like I keep saying. Great to show their appreciation for Alex but if she goes then one of the attacking players do not. So, who doesn’t? Smith, Swanson and Rodman are locks. So, it comes down to Dunn and Shaw. For most is was a Dunn vs Morgan and Dunn is from their core and time. Are you then advocating for her to be left off? She’s a vet and winner too

    • @jackiedungan8502
      @jackiedungan8502 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@candacelong7643 Dunn has more to offer. Alex is a great player but she can only play one position. You have more options with Crystal, and with such a small roster you need that. My original point is soooo many people are saying there isn’t anyone to give leadership on this team. I think that is absolutely incorrect. There are leaders all over the pitch, they just look different than what we are used to.

    Such insightful information. I really enjoyed the discussion about Manchester and your insider experiences of the Olympics. I'm picturing a huge food hall with everyone slightly side eyeing and fanning out. Just a thought re knees ACLs for women athletes. Ever since mine was reconstructed years ago, I couldn't comfortably sit with my legs crossed. It feels too tight and I particularly suffer afterwards. Ive been noticing it a lot...just how much women particularly on screen (Christen in this episode as an example) sit this way which I m imagining is a longer session than what we just viewed. Wish someone would do some research on the way women sit and whether it stretches out tendons and ligaments that shouldn't be under that stress during the simple act of sitting.

    I understand what they’re saying about experience but as a fan and viewer this will feel special. It’s like we’re growing up with the team. So many are first time Olympians. The hope is that this is just the beginning and how special is it to see them rise from the beginning. I love the glory teams of old but the level of competition is so much better which makes all this more exciting and frightening lol. USWNT aren’t expected to run away with wins and it’s how it should be. No offense to past teams. They were great but the competition wasn’t always up to par. Now it is. Also, I agree with Tobin. I do think Emma Hayes realizes the attacking core has been in Alex’s shadow. Particularly Smith and even Swanson as well. Time to let them fly. Morgan’s farewell was technically last World Cup and honestly it should have ended there with a celebration at the end of the year. Now, it’ll be this year, a year too late. Her, Becky and O’Hara will get their final bows to end 2024.

    Mad respect to Tobin Heath and Christen Press. These legends have the done the most for football and beyond! Love the re-inc podcast and the stories coming out. This one though, I just feel like as someone from the UK, it was alittle heavy on the American saviourisms that made it a slightly uncomfortable listen. Man Utd has a long ways to go when it comes to gender equity, don't get me wrong. (Never forget what that american businessman malcom glazer said about the women's team in '05 when he tookover) And Ratcliffe's latest is pitiful to say the least. That said, I think an asterisks is needed too. Because in the UK, its relationship with football and these clubs, it's a bit more complicated than in the US. You talk about it in terms of sport, business, money and investment. And sure it's all this, but Man Utd... before becoming the storied international brand it's being consumed as today, it had its start as a club for the workers of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. And what the club means to the community lies in the stories, struggles and legacies that's accumulated over the histories amidst the larger political/economic struggles of the region. It's always been a symbol for the working class...of excellence amidst a classist society that's oppressed. And that's something the men's squad built themselves. We have to give them that. For all the memories, I'm grateful. So it seems alittle like apples to oranges to compare the two in the way the conversation rolled out here about facilities, pitches, investment and all. But what can I say, I agree with the general criticism. Ratcliffe should be doing more. Needs to go wash his eyes. Shoutout to Katie Zelem for all she's done. Great captain and footballer! Maestro in the passes. She will be greatly missed. I look forward to seeing her back on the pitch.

    Club performance is the largest, most consistent, and most recent data points you have about a player, it is a big part of their cv. Now that the NWSL is or becoming very competitive, it’s hard to imagine that would call up someone who has not been doing well in club environment over someone who has been. Trajectory and current form matter. While AM is a great player, both of these factors are not her side right now.

    My frustration with some of the commentary from some media types... one majone said made the comment that the world "had transcended the previous generation," That frustrated me because the team that was transcended at the most recent tournaments had Girma, Horan, Lavelle, Cook, Sanchez, Smith, Rodman....... players of the current new generation.. SO, yes, Morgan needs passes into the box to really score. However, this team is not built in a way that involves an inside-out approach. NOW, it is all about players like Rodman, Smith, Swanson taking on players 1 vs. 3..... But the team that failed in recent tournaments HAD these new generation players on it.

    Re: Emma Hayes giving a “ media -trained “ answer to the question of Alex Morgan. No, Emma Hayes does not owe you or anyone an “explanation”. Any fan with half a soccer brain would know why Alex was not selected for the Olympic roster. Hayes did address the issue tactfully and has said all she could and should - demonstrating a respect for this player’s legacy in the process IMO. Fans and pundits like Christin should be able to “read between the lines” as to what the manager (coach) was really saying. The precautionary tale for all “greats” is not to hang on too long - especially way too long. Make it easy for yourself and for everybody else involved by knowing when it’s time “to let go”. It was not a snub in the true sense of the word. Actually it was Alex bringing it upon herself sadly.

      Exactly. All of the greats won’t have the same longevity. Rapinoe should have been left off of the WC roster but she still was good to at least 36-37. I love you both and find your commentary generally so refreshing, but I wish you had mentioned what an amazing thing this will be for black young girls to watch the Olympics and see so many talented black women playing forward. And also huge oversight to forget that Crystal Dunn started as a left back in the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 Olympics (when you were saying that there's a dearth of experienced winners at that level on the team), no? It's so clear that fitness is the issue regarding Morgan's omission on the roster. I think Hayes neglected to be more specific for fear of embarrassing Morgan (regarding how few goals she's been scoring this year). Everyone chosen has been scoring more consistently, quite obviously. I personally am disgusted that Korbin was chosen for the reasons you cited (regarding zero public representation of her growing or learning... even her anemic apology was a mere story and no longer up on Instagram). Maybe Hayes was leaned on to keep Korbin cause they don't want to alienate all the Trumpers, they need at least one blonde cornfed-looking, flag waving person to represent...egalitarian Horan certainly won't do... and good if it's an actual hateful Trumper on the team. Korbin's not that uniquely talented and she's been shitting the bed recently (due to supposedly being bummed out about being rightfully boo'ed)...

    Manchester United built a 10£ million building for the womens team a year ago. When the mens team building has been finished the women will have that building to themselves instead of sharing it with the academy. Short term pain for long term gain. Manchester United women had the highest revenue in the WSL last season, with only Barcelona having a bigger revenue in europe. The wages at Manchester United women doubled last season while the club had the 2nd highest attendance behind only Arsenal. So this notion that United does not care about the womens team is not correct, context is needed in this discussion. Btw, I have followed Christen Press since I watched her play in sweden in damallsvenskan :-)

    Respectfully, when your time is up, your time is up. Deal with it. Alex Morgan just couldn’t do it any more compared to the other players. Abby Wambach should not have been on the 2015 World Cup team, Carly Lloyd should not have been on the 2019 World Cup team, and Megan Rapinoe and Kelly O’Hara should not have been on the 2023 World Cup.

    • @bethanyward7783
      @bethanyward7783 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I see your general point, but I don't think Carli belongs on this list because she played ok & scored 2 goals. And although she didn't play well, I think Rapinoe provided a HUGE emotional service to her teammates in 2023 by shouldering (with Alex) ALL the media flack for their weak performance, so the others could focus on soccer and protect their head space. Also, I think Wambach's teammates loved her so f*cking much that they busted their asses to get her to end her career with the gold, and they did!! I don't think they fight as hard in 2019 without her on the bench. That's my hot take and I'm sticking to it 😉 (However, I do have faith this team can win without Alex).

    • @beachliving3127
      @beachliving3127 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@bethanyward7783 Actually, Carli scored three goals in the 2019 World Cup. One was against Thailand (the team scored 13) and the other two against Chile (her team scored 3). However, she was not a factor in most of the games and her presence was not critical to the tournament on the field.
      A competitor spends their entire career doing what most people say can't be done. They always overstay because deep down they feel there is still some gas in the tank and with grit and determination, they can go back and capture their former glory. Unfortunately, Father Time doesn't work that way and a coach has to make the tough decisions to put the right people on the team. I don't envy the job a coach has but someone has to tell a formerly great player that it is time to move on. A younger player may be just as good. However a coach has to decide do you want to give Alex Morgan a great sendoff or do you want to put a player who can play over the next 10 years on the squad.
      The women's team is seeing father time and a more disciplined approach to selecting a team happen now. However, for some reason it causes discomfort to some fans. They want a graceful exit but Sports doesn't work that way. Historical most male athletes in teams sports had to leave sooner than they want and almost always overstay. It is a rare athlete who retires on their own terms--Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and Julie Ertz are the few examples that come to mind.
      If you look at the ages of the women on the 2023 squad, it is clear that Rapinoe and O'hara were past their primes and did not perform well at all. They should have been hauled off to the abattoir vs given spots on the team. You had plenty of players who had World Cup Experience and their presence wasn't needed. Alex Morgan and Lyndsey Horan were more than capable representatives to speak with the media about the trials and tribulations. After all, Rapinoe was never a captain of the team, just a contributor over the years. If she was a true leader, she would have been identified earlier and MAYBE some justification could have been made to keep her on the 2023 team. However, I can't see any rationale for her inclusion.
      Past efforts don't count if you can't do the job now. Supposedly the world has caught up. If so, we need to cast off the old and go with the new when it is appropriate. Would the team would have won the 2015 World Cup without Abby Wambach or won without Carli Lloyd in 2019? In both cases yes. Honor the heroines with accolades and words not with a spot on the team.
      I'm rooting for the team to win and want to see them bring home the gold this Summer. They need to show the world that the Olympic USWNT should still be feared!
