  • Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around 15 miles southeast of Manchester, is the town of Whaley Bridge.
The town's name is derived from Old English 'weg lēah', meaning 'clearing by the road' - specifically a clearing in Macclesfield Forest. In 1351 the lands of Wayley and Yeardsley were granted to William Jodrell for his service as an archer in the English armies in Wales to Edward the Black Prince, son of Edward III.
In 1794 the construction of the Peak Forest Canal received Parliamentary approval. The canal opened in 1796, by which time Whaley Bridge was well established as a coal mining area. Limestone and burnt lime were shipped to Manchester and beyond.
In 1831 the Cromford and High Peak Railway opened which linked up Whaley Bridge to the village of Cromford, which was made famous for Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill. For geological reasons, connecting these two settlements via canal was deemed impractical. The horse-drawn railway line, later replaced with steam locomotives, solved this problem. Thus, Whaley Bridge had a direct link to the textile products manufactured at the opposite end of the Peak District.
In 1857 Whaley Bridge received a direct rail link to Stockport courtesy of the Stockport, Disley and Whaley Bridge Railway. At the time, this linked up to the Cromford and High Peak Railway, which ultimately closed in 1967. Today, the station forms part of the Manchester-Buxton Line. Trains to Manchester take around 40-45 minutes, while trains to Buxton take around 20 minutes.

Whaley Bridge is truly a town steeped in history and rich in connections. It's fascinating to learn about its origins and how it developed over the years. The significance of the Peak Forest Canal and the Cromford and High Peak Railway in shaping Whaley Bridge's identity as a coal mining and transportation hub is remarkable. The direct rail link to Stockport further enhanced its accessibility and connectivity to the surrounding areas. Today, Whaley Bridge continues to thrive, bridging the gap between its historical roots and modern transportation with the Manchester-Buxton Line. Thank you for sharing these intriguing insights into the town's past and present.

This is the town who's reservoir nearly burst a several years ago in 2019. The army used chinook helicopters to shaw it up while it was quickly emptied. It has not yet been repaired which has caused problems for the Peak Forrest Canal that it feeds. Edwina Curry (retired MP) lives here

Well it's a small place. That's pretty much the entire town centre.
