Just a psa for whoever: you aren't "supposed to be" with anyone. You don't need to "end up" with anyone. Lil extra: To me loving someone means you'd never hurt them or their feelings on purpose and won't let them feel anxiety 24/7 and of course feel attracted too. In her case the situation's really weird for saying "who I'm supposed to be with" but I do believe in soulmates and that there always be someone you're "supposed" to end up with. Maybe if you're not into relationships and skinship that much, rather as besties but for those who do seek someone they crave physical closeness. There's definitely the right person somewhere and you will feel drawn to them (intepret that however you want) no matter their looks, gender or blablabla if they are indeed your "soulmate".
Maybe she should've just waited until she really fell in love to the point where she says, she can't love without him anymore (can be 100% sure there's no red flags). Saying that just feels a bit wrong, also because maybe always having been in love with you, without you really feeling it is pointless. I agree🤣

Yeah, I've noticed the formula too: it's always the sequel that introduces a new POC love interest who always gets sidelined by the original, pale as a sheet, white boy love interest. And it's usually the POC who makes more sense as the main character's boyfriend, to me anyways. John Ambrose and Lara Jean had more in common than Lara Jean and Peter ever did. And Marco had much more to him than just his size and unsolved anger issues.
Yeah and why do they always have to POC? That’s something that really bothers me. Especially if their og boyfriends are abusive

Yeah and even if they weren't POC, the message they are sending to young girls is very much problematic. The main characters always choose the emotionally manipulative, obsessed dudes. Exactly!
Also.. the boy with the crate is named *Dunkles?*
@@ashleypisarts His name is Jack or Jake and the other characters just call him by his last name Dunkleman, which is kind of a ridiculous name
Dunkers is abusive. He pretty much had a fit when Jodi left the dinner after he gave the okay for her to leave if she needed to.
Edit: I went back to the movie to double check on what I stated and I want to add on. And it’s also to clarify to those brushing it off as Dunkers being childish.
The next day at school, Dunkers pins the blame on Jodi for leaving the anniversary dinner even though he had a fit over her leaving AFTER he said he was fine with it. He clearly did not have confidence in Jodi because he said he thought she wouldn’t actually leave. This bullies Jodi into staying a little longer just for Dunkers to lose his temper about Jodi’s newfound popularity and after school activities. After they break up and Jodi ends up kissing another guy, Dunkers leaves the classroom in a rage after Jodi told him what happened. Furthermore, he basically gives Jodi the silent treatment which is mentally abusive. This is making Jodi think she is in the wrong when it’s really Dunkers who is in the wrong here. The dinner scene alone, showed how possessive and abusive he is towards Jodi. It’s not love. While the abuse may not be physical, emotional abuse is still a thing and I see that with Dunkers. He is an emotional abuser to Jodi and the dinner scene made that clear.
@@alicetheneko7529 That's not abusive? Ya'll need to stop throwing words around. Abuse is repeated behaviour with the intention of causing harm. Someone getting upset with you or disagreeing with you is not abuse.

You can actually make someone who is rich or pretty have a hard life in a story context. Though I don't think they have the capability to expand on it.
For rich it could be an absent family, no emotional support, abusive parent or constantly being disregarded as nothing compared to other siblings.
The issues with being attractive is being reduced to your looks and the other is darker route such as sexual harassment.
Anything situation can be a good or meaningful movie. Because any real person has real problems. there isn't one person that never has struggles or conflicts in their life. My idea for a 'tall girl' movie that utilizes a lot of these elements: a girl who IS taller than average, but she has body dysmorphia over her height, which makes her obsess over it and negatively filters her perception which is why all the actors are made to look so much shorter than they are (maybe she has ocd also, and the 'bad voice' is intrusive thoughts), but she goes to therapy and learns EFFECTIVE COPING MECHANISMS and as her negative filter lifts, it does for the t rest of us as well.
Honestly though. Body dysmorphia would’ve been such a good topic for a film like this to cover, especially given that it just… isn’t ever talked about. It would make sense for her to obsess over her height because of it and no one really understanding why she’s like this cause it’s such an unaddressed mental illness.
That's actually smart.... mmmm you've done this movie somewhat of poetic justice
This is much better. Tall people do get bullied but this movie just has a bad storyline that Idek what they want to deliver to the audiences.
I love this idea! May I suggest excluding the ridiculous relationship drama and more inclusion and focus on Farida?

let’s talk about how these netflix teen movies are all the same... first movie, girl meets guy, they fall in love and end up dating, the end. second movie, girl and guy are together but oh no, a new guy comes into a picture! new guy, who funnily enough is always a man of colour, actually has more chemistry with girl but of course girl won’t ditch guy bc they have “history” or whatever. so she dumps new guy to run back to guy (who is often a white guy with brown hair) and the movie ends. if this movie is like all the others, tall girl 3 is gonna be about how jodi and what’s his face have relationship issue but manage to work it out bc they’re just so gosh darn in love. loving the versatility from netflix!
Bonus points it they're fighting about wanting to go to different schools after highschool.
That's a great summary of all Netflix teen rom-com movie series'. A lot of the times, either the girl meets the guy in the first movie, or they already have some type of history (neighbours, grew up together, childhood crush who never noticed the girl or cared about her feelings for him until they hit puberty and he's finally noticed her, etc). I'm sure Tall Girl 3 will be about how Jodi and bf have to decide between going to the college of their dreams (which is usually some prestigious university that they somehow managed to get accepted to with some cringe-worthy essay) or making their relationship work. It's the same plot over and over again with slightly different backstories and characters with slightly different struggles.

The point of the movie isn't that her life sucks because of her height, but because she is bullied with her height
@@amandaflatt6523 Yes but at the same time it makes it feel unrealistic. Sure she may have been bullied for being tall, but at the same time that’s pretty rare. I’ve heard of people who got bullied for being tall and it’s usually more jokes than anything. In the end, people know you can’t control your height and will at most make a joke at your expense. The bullying doesn’t mean she will define her entire life on her height. (Being tall is what makes me “me”) while most tall people acknowledge it as just another characteristic, like having blue or green eyes

The most unbelievable thing in this movie is that there seems to be only two people at a fairly large public high school over six feet tall. The public high school in my hometown had at least a dozen guys 6’3” and taller, with two or three around 6’6”, and this was in a town with a population of around 7,000.
Woah where are you from
It's a movie.
Okay, but keep in mind that's for guys. The world average height for women being 160-165cm tall, Jodi is REALLY tall. Although I doubt it is such a hardship as it is presented to be in this movie.
I saw taller people outside large cities, usually on rural areas. Being tall isn’t just genetics but the diet & environment have a big influence too. I was on NY & Americans that were from there white or black were short or average but I didn’t saw anyone tall.

Am I the only one getting really sick of "teen girl" movie plots that just introduce some random second guy for MC to will they/won't they flirt with while they're already in an established relationship for drama?
Even if the guy they're already with is shit (which is often) it doesn't make me want to root for the MC. I know they never actually end up with the second dude so it only makes their actions seem shortsighted and cruel. Plus, I never leave convinced that they won't do it again to the next cute guy that happens to make eye contact either... It's just so irritating...
I get sick of it too. It's like at the start of the 2nd movie things seem to be going well between the established couple, and then something happens which makes them have a fight, then a random second guy shows up for even more drama and to cause the MC to question her love for first guy, then random second guy proves to be an arsehole, so she ends up picking first guy anyway. Ugh, it's so repetitive. Like in real life, you rarely ever end up forever together with your high school boyfriend, anyway. Sure, it can happen, as I know a few people that it did happen to. But these movies seem to think it's super romantic that if you only ever date one guy it's the best love ever, even if that guy is toxic.

wow, what a horrible, tragic life she has
honestly one of the main things that bother me in a ton of these modern netflix romcoms: the 2nd love interest (that's supposed to temporarily woo the mc away from the love interest) is always .... darker or "spicier" in the ethnic category than the main love interest. it's a pattern that feels weird, sort of like an "exotic" getaway until the mc gets their "head in check"💀
YUP! This is the comment.
Yeap, at least have them introduced in the first movie and be part of the class or friends group; they always "just moved to this town/city".
Yes!!! That shit is so offensive! Can they please stop?! This is the third movie in a row!!
Agreed! Someone needed to say this.
The fact that "getting their head in check" is getting back with the white guy is pretty not okay, especially when it's a trop that is used so often.
To be fair, I've known girls who are over six feet and were legitimately made to feel uncomfortable about it (many guys will not date a girl who is taller than them no matter how pretty she is). And the actress herself was bullied for being tall. This movie could have worked if it had been less melodramatic and stupid about The Tall Problem.
The sequel tries to overcorrect this by having adults condescendingly lecture the teenage protagonist and tell her that her problems don't matter because homeless people have it worse. Which is like telling a girl who is sad about her eating disorder, "STOP WHINING! THERE ARE KIDS STARVING IN AFRICA!! JUST EAT A SANDWICH!!"
Re: The sequel's problem
I'm pretty sure this is them trying to address the criticism, but I also have a feeling that that is also the way they see the critics of the movie- nitpicky insufferable people who don't care about the struggles of tall people. While the struggles of tall women are definitely real due to society's belief of what the 'perfect woman' and the 'perfect relationship' should be like (i.e. the man being taller than the woman), the sad truth is that the movie is just absolutely terrible at executing anything it tries to do.
Tall Girl could have been a movie exploring how societal expectations put a lot of pressure on all of us (as a girl you can't be too tall, as a guy you can't be too short, or else you're 'undesirable') and how even though there are 'bigger problems in life', that doesn't invalidate our own feelings. You could even include a scene where the MC feels bad due to how privileged she is, believing she doesn't have a right to be insecure. This could be really compelling!
What we got was a generic romance movie featuring a girl whose whole personality is complaining about being tall and not getting boys, who is actively terrible to her friends and displays no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Bummer.
Dating is hard for everyone. Yes even attractive people if your intentions are a long term relationship and not hook ups. Short guys are rejected WAY more than tall girls because women are the main selectors for relationships and genetically guys are more taller than girls. Honestly her bullying as a public figure may come from other factors and they just want to pick on her, and overall it’s still not a big problem at all. I would even say I’m more oppressed by having a nut allergy and my near death situations than being a tall girl and being rejected once and a while. Eventually there will be someone who likes you
Your comment definitely made me think.
Yes, but also, maybe not make it the entire plot of the movie? Like “tall” is in the fucking title and they make it clear Jody has pretty much no personality outside of being tall. Instead they could have given her this as an insecurity and focused on other things. Maybe she was struggling because she didn’t like jobs traditionally made fit for tall people (sports and modeling). Don’t make the whole plot about being tall but rather make it about something else, since tall people, even the insecure ones, don’t wander around all day thinking about their height. They have goals and passions other than finding someone the “adequate height” for them and settling down. Another thing, did the bullying never become redundant? They kept using the same phrase and at no point did people get bored or let it go. Like believe me, people would get over it the second a POC cha
character would walk through the door since they’re than prone to bullying. Like, why were they bullying just her? If they were so mean they should practically be bullying anyone different but that never comes up.
Yes, it could've been a movie exploring an average teens silly insecurities, that we all know are small but that still bother us alot. Being tall should not be the basis of her character just like how a person still exists outside of their insecurities.
As a tall girl myself, this movie infuriates me like no other. Growing up I was super insecure about my height, and this movie just absolutely trivializes those struggles. There's a fair point to be made about how society shames women for taking up space and how being any larger than "normal" is frowned upon. But no, they had to take the route of comparing struggles and stupid unwarranted relationship drama. It kills me inside to watch
agree..they made a whole joke out of the real struggles and shit we had to take from people just for being tall, they completely mocked the whole subject
Right? This would have been a great idea to make a movie on class criticism or the social privilege you have coming from wealthy backgrounds, and how these two things affect the life of a high school junior that happens to be extremely tall for their identity. Applying my own struggles with height (like not having the wealthy privilege to buy clothes that fit, or be thin and blonde, so much so that you're still conventionally beautiful), and the likes... They could have done so much more for these two movies, and manage to keep it simple enough to still be a "lazy" watch after a long day. Other elements like there being no racially-charged violence or issues between the social groups also makes it seem less sincere, especially when societal ideas of height preferences are still prevalent enough to be bullied over, but race is just not even discussed, let alone inexistent, if not for the token coloured characters. What can I say except "Netflix happened".

“I’m not saying being tall is worse than those other things". This would be a fine way of addressing how Jodie acted in the previous movie, if this wasn't how the previous movie itself portrayed her being tall too. If Tall Girl itself had just shown the challenges of being tall instead of turning it into literal adversity, I don't think as many people would have cared as much that Jodie acted like it was.
You know a challenge and adversity are the same thing right?
@@folklore_of_beth No, they are not. Oxford defines adversity as "difficulties; misfortune" and challenge as "a task or situation that tests someone's abilities".
