Local Knowledge Fishing Show hey guys. Would love to know in addition to gear, what # test, knots etc. seems every scenario is a little different depending on conditions, species, bite. Thanks! That goes for both SD and FL.
Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.
I love watching you guys I grew up in little torch with my grandparents fished my whole life went to school in sugarloaf then key west I miss it so much. I can’t wait to move back someday you guys rock. My son and I went to San Diego last weekend and had a blast with Bonita barracuda calicos and a couple big California sheepshead. Rush. I’ve been trying to figure out if we went to school together. Lol
So nice to see a rig video without someone recommending rods and reels that are just not economically feasible for the average working man!! Nice to see some reasonable priced outfits you are recommending!!
Nice presentation, very informative. Love your 32 Offshore Andros boat, featured towards the beginning of your video. One of best Offshore tournament boats around!!
Great info here. If you can share one on crimping , applications for aluminum , copper crimps , proper technique , choosing correct pliers , ect. Alot of folks on my last trip are still trying to tie knots with 200lb mono and losing fish. Thank you Ali.
My all round setup is basically the second setup you described (same reel) but with a 15-40lb rod, even though it’s a bit lighter it’s and Okuma pch and those can definitely handle a big load
May I suggest you change from the uni to uni knot, to the Albright- to join the leader to braid. They are just as easy to tie but thinner through the guides. I noticed your knot on the fathom 15 combo..I just made this change...on the exact combo, with even the same Spiderwire blue camo...cheers. It is also a more beautiful looking knot...
We can tie an albright no problem but we prefer the uni to uni for day to day fishing. It's faster (to tie correctly) and almost as strong. Do what works for you.
Thanks for the great video. For a 7' medium rod to fill that 2nd setup "if you only have one" setup, would you go with the Penn 25N mated to Carnage 2 Med/Light 20-50lb rating or the Carnage 2 Med. 30-80lb rating? I'm in the LA area, Catalina and occasionally SD SoCal fishing, mostly party boat. thanks
I'd go with the 30-80# model. We have found that that Carnage rod actions are a little softer than their rating. When in doubt, we always step up to a heavier rod. Best of luck!

Hey, I am looking to get a nice setup for going on charters for rock fish, yellowtail, tuna, bonito. What reel and Rod do you recommend? I was looking at the PENN Squall II Level Wind Conventional Fishing Reel 20 size, and the Carnage™ II Boat Conventional 30-80 6'6 medium. Let me know what you think! Thanks
Hey Ali! I was thinking of buying a new rod and reel for bait fishing for the bigger 60-100 LB bluefin. I was gonna get a Calstar 700MH paired with a Penn Fathom FTH40NLD2 Lever Drag 2-Speed with 80-pound braid and a small 15 yard 40-pound mono top shot. If you could reply to this comment about what you think and if I should get this for this style of fishing or recommend any other rods/reels it would be greatly appreciated!
Hey Garrett, Thanks for writing in bud. I think you might be a little light on the rod. I'd probably go with something like a 700H or even XH depending on the blank. The reel and line set up you have is exactly what we are fishing for the bluefin right now.
Thanks for the suggestion Ali! I’m going to make my purchase with the same reel and line setup and a 700h. I really appreciate your time to help me out.

I'm going to start fishing NY harbor/north jersey next spring. I'm definitely sold on the Penn fathom 15's. What rod would you recommended for Flounder, black bass and the occasional porgies ? Thanks
I’m looking into getting a nitro graphite ulua pole and not sure about reel. Never used a conventional reel before. So I’m technically a beginner at using a conventional reel. I hoping to catch an ulua, located in Hawaii. Any tips on reel for beginners
The Fathom 25 Narrow is our go to for conventional casting. Light, affordable and can cast a mile. GT's are tackle breakers but the Fathom can handle it.
I want to get a Talica as my all around reel, what sizing would you recommend for it? I was looking at a 12 but after watching this video I’m now wondering if the sizing will be too small for SoCal fishing. I was also thinking about picking up a daiwa saltist 15 and a penn fathom II 25 and that would be my starting quiver.
Will a penn carnage II medium-heavy 7’0 casting rod be sufficient for you’re inbetween setup? Paired with a sql25n? Mainly live lining 65# braid - 25-30# flouro Very new and this setup would be within my budget. Thanks for any feedback! Fishing Channel Islands for yellowtail
Just went to SquidCo and picked up a Fathom 25 2 speed with a Axis 780XH. Do you think that’s to much Rod to run a 15 single for Sand bass? Awesome videos btw!
There is a Penn fathom 15 for sale locally. Should I pick it up. It's in Colorado we fish lakes for pike Lakers and what ever else bites. Would this be over kill.
Just bought a Penn 30 2 speed. Have a Shimano medium heavy Tellas blue on the way. What do you think about that combo. Oh ya fishing out of Oceanside 3/4 day mostly bottom so far...
I like the Daiwa Saltist 30 better than the Penn fathom 15. I have caught anything from calico bass to 20-25 lb tuna with it. Shimano Torium 30 rather than the Penn Fathom 25. Rather than the 40, I'd go with an Avet MXL Raptor... but I'm not sponsored by PENN. lol
@@LocalKnowledge Hi Ali. The Carnage III rods finally arrived in limited numbers. You were correct regarding online. I ordered one today from Bass Pro Shops. Now it's the wait for it to get to San Diego. Thanks again.
I started with an avet mxl on a shimano trevala now I’m trying to see whats next I was looking at the accurate bv400 and a seigler ,you have any opinion on them?
Hi bud. What do you recommend for bottom fishing for fish like rays etc? I do own 9500 spinfisher vi, but many recommend me using over head reels. I was looking for penn squall. What would you recommend? Your answer would mean a lot. Thanks
Whatever you are most comfortable with. Throwing a conventional reel will take some practice but is worth the effort in the long run. A Fathom 25N and an 8' rod would be a good start.
Great video, but I'm trying to get into bait caster reels for the maximum line capacity they have, and I'm not sure if this is the place I need to be. I use a 12 ft pole. Are these reels good for casting offshore? I need to bomb the line out far, and from what I've learned, a trolling reel is different from a bait caster? I've always used a spin reel but the line capacity does not compete with these types of reels. I'm fishing for White Sturgeon offshore, off the Columbia river in Washington. Looking for any tips that can lead me to my first official bait caster reel. Any suggestions help, and are appreciated.
We call these a conventional reel. They do cast far for sure, especially with a rod that long. If you aren't used to casting a conventional reel, you'll need to practice to get the hang of it. Best of luck.
50-65lb braid, 15-40lb flourocarbon or mono top shots. All depends on what size the fish are, how toothy and if they will eat a heavier line before scaling down to get a bite.
hey, im looking for a rod/reel setup for surface irons, jigging, and live bait. im looking for a setup for both calicos and 20-30 lb yellowtail could you please help to let me know what would be a good setup?
That's a lot of jobs for one rod, but a 25N PENN Fathom is the reel you want. It will do all the above. You really need more than one set up to target that wide range of fish but the 25n with a carnager 7'6" 30-80# rod would to a good all around job. Good luck.
What braid do u guys run on a 5500 slammer? Also, would Madscads work for calico? Would a slammer 5500 be a good setup for kids fishing for yellowfin? Thanks.
I’ll be purchasing my first decent size rod and reel , reel size is a 30 I’m just not sure what pound test to use . I’ve seen people use braid and then mono as a lead but I’d like to hear your opinion on this . I’m aiming to set this up as my daily rod , thanks in advance 😎
Really interesting. I am just starting to fill out my quiver having never fished for anything other than rockfish/lingcod! I was gifted a 7' MH 40-100lb TICA WASABI Jigging rod and an 7' MH Uglystick Bigwater 20-50b rod. I just purchased the FTH25NLD2 and the FTH40NLD2 to mate to the rods. Are my rods just slightly lighter than you would recommend for the reels ... in is my 40-100 better suited for the 25N and then I get a beefier rod for the 40N?
It's hard to say not being familar with those exact rods. Judging by the line specs I think you're pretty close. Put the 40 on the heavy rod and the 25n on the lighter rod and go fish. You can tweak your set up from there. Good luck.
@@LocalKnowledge Thank you ... while it's high;y doubtful I land a BFT on my first time ever trip out for them .. at least I'll have the gear to give me a fighting chance if I am lucky enough to hook one. I love the educational aspects of your videos .. you do great work Ali.
These set ups will be right up your alley. You can also bring a couple of medium size Nomad poppers and 180-300 gram flat fall style jigs like the Nomad Buffalo. Talk to the landing a week before you leave to make sure you don't need any special gear.
Make sure you have heavy weights 12-16oz, 6/0-7/0 super mutu circle hooks, 60-80 test setups for big yellows and grouper bottom fishing. Sibiki setups you will catch your own bait in the morning. Surface iron fishing is awesome down there. So have heavy and light jigs.
Thank you so much for this very informative video! Quick question, if I get a rod that supports 30-80lb braid. Do I need a reel that supports up to 80lb braid as well? Thank you!
When we talk about line weight we are usually talking leader weight or the mono/flouro. If you are fishing 80# braid you're probably fishing 80-130# leader. For that I'd suggest a PENN Torque 60 or an Interational 12/16. Hope that helps.
If you're casting more, get a star drag. If you're doing more bait/bottom fishing, go with a lever. They will both cross over well, but the star drags are a bit better for casting. Good luck.
@@LocalKnowledge thank you, I live in Connecticut and am trying to get a rod and reel combo to use in the Long Island sound for striped bass and bluefish, and to be able to use it from New Jersey up to Cape Cod
i want to know can levelwind reel that have automatic guide line can use for surf fishing and how far i can cast if i use 12ft rod and 30lb or 40lb braid.
@@LocalKnowledge great now i dont need to cancel my order penn carnage II 12ft with penn fathom II size 20. Because i still beginner use conventional reel for surf its hard for me to use reel that dont have auto guide line.😅
This is true and will happen from time to time. Best bet is to call the landing a few days before you leave and make sure you have what the fish want to eat in your bag.
Can you cast that 40 narrow if you need to? Say a surface iron? Like more than pitching baits n stuff out there..just trying to really buy one set up. Also realizing I would love a two speed but just rarely get out searching for big tunas, unfortunately. Great content. So sick!
really depends on where and what you're fishing for. For Socal the PENN Carnage rods are hard to beat in terms of value. I'd go with a 7' stick in the 60-80# class. BEst of luck.
I see people like to use the penn 25n for the irons. What are your thoughts on the smaller squall 15 with the magnetic cast aid. Think my old daiwa sl20sh needs to be replaced.
Fathom series reels are "metal" frame/body, Squall series [and Daiwa SL series] are "graphite" frame/body, and so don't compare straight across. There is a Fathom FTH15 star drag that has the metal frame, but has centrifuge casting brakes instead of magnetic. In Fathom star drag, the FTH12 would be the same size as your SL20sh if you want to stick with that size.
@@tunanorth thanks. I was specifically asking bout the squall because graphite body last longer on my kayak, is lighter and the mag casting aid is more forgiving. Plus it's cheaper so I won't feel so bad if it gets lost in the sea. The fathoms are nice but just don't need more heavy duty for what I do.
@@otroflores91 OK got it. If the graphite frame works out better for your use, the SQL12 will be the same size/line capacity as your SL20sh with the Squall model being about an ounce lighter.
Dear Mr i see all videos and i wat buy a Penn to fish big tuna with live bait or maybe popper. I have a Saragossa 18K, but is is small for some tunas i catch i fight 3 or 4 hours with it. I want something more strong, and i thinking a conventional reel like Fathon lever drad 30 or lever drag, but lever drag is possible to casting? I fish in Oil Ships in Rio de Janeiro Brasil, and we fish a big tuna more than 180 pounds, what kid of penn i need to buy? And i ask Lever drag reels can i casting 30, 40 or 50 meters, without backflash? Or i need to buy the reel like Avet MC lever drag with magnetic? Thanks
You can cast a lever drag for sure. It doesn't go as far as a spinning reel but it will go 50 meters plus no problem with some practice. The PENN Fathom 30 or 40N woudl be my choice paired with a 60-100# rod that is 8' long. Check out the PENN West Coast series rod. They have a few options in this range. Good luck!

Will a penn carnage II medium-heavy 7’0 casting rod be sufficient for you’re inbetween setup? Paired with a sql25n?
Mainly live lining
65# braid - 25-30# flouro
Very new and this setup would be within my budget. Thanks for any feedback!
Fishing Channel Islands for yellowtail
That will work!
+ sub btw. Thx for the speedy reply
@Local Knowledge Fishing Show what do you think about the Penn Squall Lever Drag Combo ? How does it compare to the 2nd setup in this video ?
The squall is a great budget reel. WE have plenty. The Fathoms are just a notch up in terms of bearings, etc.
Would the first one be good for pier fishing also?
Totally!
Just went to SquidCo and picked up a Fathom 25 2 speed with a Axis 780XH. Do you think that’s to much Rod to run a 15 single for Sand bass? Awesome videos btw!
That’s a pretty heavy set up for bass. It will work for sure but something lighter is probably going to be more fun.
There is a Penn fathom 15 for sale locally. Should I pick it up. It's in Colorado we fish lakes for pike Lakers and what ever else bites. Would this be over kill.
Probably a little heavy for fresh water fishing. I'd look at some of the smaller abu garcia reels instead for your needs.
Just bought a Penn 30 2 speed. Have a Shimano medium heavy Tellas blue on the way. What do you think about that combo. Oh ya fishing out of Oceanside 3/4 day mostly bottom so far...
That will work just fine for everything up to medium size tuna. Enjoy.
What rod would you suggest with penn40nld2. I believe I heard you say Penn Ally but I think there are different models?
Match the rod to the application. If you're bait fishing go for something in 50# class. For trolling go a little heavier.
can you go into what low profile bait caisters are good for ling cod
More videos coming soon!
I like the Daiwa Saltist 30 better than the Penn fathom 15. I have caught anything from calico bass to 20-25 lb tuna with it. Shimano Torium 30 rather than the Penn Fathom 25. Rather than the 40, I'd go with an Avet MXL Raptor... but I'm not sponsored by PENN. lol
That's all really good gear. We like our Penn gear but there's plenty of good tackle out there these days.
Great video Ari. When the Penn Carnage III rods finally get here, which retailer in the San Diego area would you recommend? Thanks!
I'm not sure who will be carrying them. You'll probably need to call PENN. There will be a ton of options online.
@@LocalKnowledge Hi Ali. The Carnage III rods finally arrived in limited numbers. You were correct regarding online. I ordered one today from Bass Pro Shops. Now it's the wait for it to get to San Diego. Thanks again.
Do the fathom star drags come in left hand?
Yes. Check out their website www.PENNFISHING.com
I started with an avet mxl on a shimano trevala now I’m trying to see whats next I was looking at the accurate bv400 and a seigler ,you have any opinion on them?
All good stuff. We would argue that the PENN stuff is just as good or better. The Fathom line is really hard to beat for the buck.
Would a fathom 25n work with a carnage 2 jigging heavy rod?
Works great!
What’s your recommendation for fishing from the bank? Florida coast.
We don't do much of that. I'd check with your local tackle store to get dialed in on gear and technique.
First time I just bought a conventional Penn 30. Which fishing Rod should you recommend? I have been using a spinning Reels.
Depends on what you want to do but a Penn Carnage II rod rated at 30-80# would be a good start.
Sorry if this was asked before, I couldn’t find it. What is the braid test for every setup? Also what is the mono test for each set up? Thank you!!
Thanks.
Usually 65# braid. WE like Seaguar Threadlock. It does make a GREAT kids setup for tuna. We use them with our little guys all the time. Good luck!
@@LocalKnowledge thanks for the quick reply! How many yards do u get of 65 pound braid?
I’ll be purchasing my first decent size rod and reel , reel size is a 30 I’m just not sure what pound test to use . I’ve seen people use braid and then mono as a lead but I’d like to hear your opinion on this . I’m aiming to set this up as my daily rod , thanks in advance 😎
65-80# Seaguar threadlock is our choice.
Would you say a penn fathom 12 would do the job for 1/2 day trips for sculpin, calico bass, bonito in SoCal?
Absolutely!
I like my Daiwa Saltist 20, 30, and 40 BGs.
Great reels Branden. Good luck this season.
@@LocalKnowledge Thanks, going offshore on the San Diego Oct 5th for YFT and Dorado.
branden doesnt know what hes talking about. -Dsmooth87
I have a question so I’m planning to get a conventional reel for surf fishing any good rod and reel combo under 270$?
Check out www.PENNFISHING.com There's lots of options there for any budget! Good luck!
Which carnage II boat rod would be the best to pair with an Avet Mxl?
Carnage II rated at 30-80# should do the trick!
Can these rods handle 8 ounce sinkers what’s good budget rod for a 8 ounce sinker I’m going fishing on a boat to the spawn for porgies to striped bass
Great info! I have my 1st trip to bola this summer and i was wondering what setups and gear yu would recommend! Also what jigs/lures? Thanks
So have heavy and light jigs.
any recommendations rods for a shimano tekota reel for inshore fishing. I am stuck and in need of advice
Not really familar with that reel. Sorry.
Quick question. Do you know if the Fathom star drags are made in the US or are they made overseas?
The Fathom Series is made overseas.
Hi BD! Thanks for the great info! Should I get 25N in star or lever drag? Not sure what the advantages/disadvantages are. Maybe casting?
If you're casting more, get a star drag. If you're doing more bait/bottom fishing, go with a lever. They will both cross over well, but the star drags are a bit better for casting. Good luck.
@@LocalKnowledge awesome! Thank you!!
what about a surface iron casting rod and reel
We will do a vid on the art of surface iron fishing in the very near future.
How have the Penn Fathoms been holding up? Have you been using them a lot? Any issues?
They are our go to and they have been bullet proof. We love them.
What pound braid are you using on the 15, and what rob is that?
50# and it's a Carnage 2 - 20-60# rating.
Should work fine. They cast awesome.
@@LocalKnowledge great now i dont need to cancel my order penn carnage II 12ft with penn fathom II size 20. Because i still beginner use conventional reel for surf its hard for me to use reel that dont have auto guide line.😅
What rod do you recommend for the Penn Fathom FTH15???
PENN Carnage II MODEL # CARBWII2050C70 for most stuff.
@@LocalKnowledge What about a Fathom 30?
On the Carnage III Boat rod line rating is this for mono or braid line ? I'm looking at CARBWIII2040C70 rated at 20-40 line
its' for mono but it is on the light side. We always go up one rod weight for our style of fishing.
Since the CARBW800H or M are no longer in production, what is the best equivalent out of the 2nd gen. Carnage rods?
I beleive the CARBW800H was their jig rod correct? There really isn't a jig stick option from Penn right now. But we may change that in the future!
Thank you Ali! Which setup do you recommend for rock fishing and a small yellow tail? Something that is more universal. Thank you!
Definitely the 25N Star Drag with a 7' Carnage 40-80# model. Good luck.
Local Knowledge Fishing Show thank you
Local Knowledge Fishing Show do you see a need for a 2 speed reel?
15lb Fluorcarbon is all I can catch yft at the moment off San Diego. Bluefin a super line shy and can only land the 30lb class fish.
So sick!
For general-purpose surface iron use, the brand new Fathom II star drags will be an excellent choice; either the 25N size or the 30 size.
What would be a comparable model for the 25n but for left handed people… it shows online its a discontinued model
I think you can get a 25NLD (lever Drag) in lefty.
Which rod did you use for the 25n in the video?
Carnage 2 7' - 30-80#
Are you able to cast that last one from land into shark depths?
We can throw a conventional with a long rod about 75 yards maybe...
Not sure if I missed it but what weight braids are you putting on the 3 different set ups?
50-65# Seaguar Threadlock. AWesome braid.
hey man im looking for a bottomfishing rod to go with my avet. any recommendations?
really depends on where and what you're fishing for. For Socal the PENN Carnage rods are hard to beat in terms of value. I'd go with a 7' stick in the 60-80# class. BEst of luck.
What spec rod goes with that first setup with the size 15 reel? Thanks in advance!
Probably a 15 to 30 or 20 to 40 something light but not too heavy
Carnage 2 - 20-50# model. Great set up.
@@LocalKnowledge at what length
@@tunanorth awesome. Going to order one and retire or give away the dawia.
Good luck!
What are the details of the rod for the first lighter set up??
Its in the description.
Please do hooks and jigs
Will add to the future vids! thanks for the comment
I got the penn fathom for deep sea fishing. messed up and dident get the two speed
