Really happy you enjoy the videos! This wasn’t the fanciest meal, but it’s definitely a nice way to take a dehydrated meal and make it a bit more palatable, Hope you have a nice weekend.
Reminds me of when we summited Slioch three years ago. I love the area around Torridon and Loch Maree. Great video invoking great memories of Scottish wilderness trips.
Such a cool area. I just wish it wasn’t such a long drive for me. Otherwise I’d definitely come here more often! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment on the videos. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this (as I do all your vids). Playing catch-up on TH-cam, so I'm looking forward to watching the next parts in the following days. Great (and dedicated) work as always. Best wishes - Alistair (Llanelli, south Wales)
Totally sympathise with the midges. In July 2023 we camped above Kirkaig Falls in the Assynt area below Suilven. They came in their millions! The worst I’ve known and I’ve camped in Scotland many times
Lovely video chap! You’re an inspiration. We may not have the varied wilderness of the US, but what we do have is beautiful. Your videos just keep getting better and better! Looking forward to parts two and three!
Greetings! This was a long first day on the water but a great start to the trip. The Highlands are a rugged beautiful place! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. 🙏😀
Man, that was a tough day! Scotland is brutal and beautiful at the same time. The midges can spoil your day big time as you well know, but we keep coming back to this rugged land.
Such a beautiful country in any weather 😀👍. I could have done without the midges but all part of the experience if you choose to come at this time of the year.
Really enjoyed that Todd. Great to see you in Scotland. That looked really tough. I did a Pac rafting trip up there earlier this year just north of Ullapool. It’s the first time I’ve ever done it and couldn’t believe how tiring the paddling was, even though we only did about 4 miles. I was in the Cairngorms last week. The midges were savage. They showed me no mercy. Looking forward to the next part. All the best - Dave
Great to have a bit more time so I could make the drive up to Scotland. Such a stunning place. I was very fortunate to have the wind to my back on this first day otherwise this paddle would have been nearly impossible. Also gave me a nice break from those little monsters 😅. The weather for the first half of the second day was awful but by the evening I am rewarded with an incredible campsite and beautiful weather, but paid for it in blood with the midges 😂. ATB Dave
Thank you! It’s always nice to have a proper meal and for whatever reason I do find cooking at camp really relaxing 👍😀. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.
Great stuff! Paddling in that huge loch with the potential weather change was challenging. A well-deserved simple dinner and bed. Looking forward to Day 2. Cheers
Definitely a challenging paddle but I felt very fortunate to have the wind to my back. Made the paddle much faster than it would have been otherwise. I slept well that night 👍. Really appreciate you watching!
Awesome packraft and wild camp adventure. Love your videos, you always make a comfort camp taking advantage of modern gear. I enjoy your your choice of gear as its quality, your tips ( even how you mentioned staying with the action camera during rain ), your cooking skills and food always looks delicious. This was the real deal, proper wilderness and remenants of the anceint boreal forests we have left in my home nation.
Really happy you’re enjoying the videos. This was a really beautiful forest. Happy I was able to find a spot to pitch the tent in the end. Thanks for watching.
Glad you liked the video! Definitely one of the toughest paddles I’ve had in a while. This is a 64L pack so it can hold quite a bit and I can use the bear canister holder on the top of the bag to carry the packraft which is really nice 👍.
Great video. I reckon you must have carried a few thousand midges down the loch after inflating your raft with that huge bag. "Lads, dinner is taking us with him so keep quiet inside the boat until he lets us out again, then feast!" I found the "windshield" on the Trangia Mini to be next to useless so I use a tiny Lixada twig stove which fits the burner perfectly and provides much better wind protection. It's also small enough when collapsed to fit inside the cook kit along with the burner, pot gripper and a lighter.
😂👍 hate those midges so much! Luckily the winds kept them at bay until I was in the forest. I agree the windshield is terrible. I normally carry a small windshield with it also but I forgot it. I will have to check out the twig stove you’re talking about. Appreciate the comment 👍
What an adventure so far! Scotland is such a beautiful and challenging place. I don’t see the Anaris in action much and it’s good to see it being used. I’ll look out for the others. Thanks
Scotland is a stunning place. I don’t often use trekking pole tents on my single night camps but for a multiday trip like this, the Anaris is fantastic 👍. Part two should be out this week!
I have recently discovered this channel and it's a gem. Great quality. I've been watching all your videos, some of them even more than once. The Crib Goch one, is amazing. Thank you
Thank you. That Crib Goch hike was pretty cool. Such fantastic views the entire hike 👍. At some point I need to get back to Snowdonia for another camp. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment 🙏
Quality first installment mate - stunning area but those midges are horrendous. They would genuinely put me off summer trips there. That breeze gave some nice respite. Too food and great atmosphere as always, captured well. Looking forward to part 2 👊👍
Thanks, man. The midges are definitely offputting, and although my day two camp location was absolutely stunning the midges were so bad that I could not even open the door of my tent for quite some time because I didn’t want them to pour inside 😅. Definitely not the best time of year to be in Scotland, but when given the opportunity to actually go on a bigger multi day trip, I took it. Thanks for watching Chris. ATB
Thanks! So on this first day, it was technically only 10 miles, but definitely a long way to paddle when the conditions were a bit rougher. The midges were an absolute nightmare. They actually get worse on day two at camp 😅. Really appreciate you watching!
A productive start to the trip. Although the wind made the paddle down the lock a bit more challenging it helped a lot. Really appreciate you watching!
I am from India and I like your videos very much, that's why I eagerly wait for your videos, thank you very much for making me feel very cozy sitting at home🥰😘🤗
Thanks! I am really liking how easy it is to get on and off the water with it 👍. And it's light enough that I can now do trips that were just not possible with my canoe. Really enjoying it. ATB
Great video! The person who invented those Knorrs sides deserves the Nobel prize. I use tons of them. So many flavors available. When you were cutting those grape tomatoes I had to laugh. Because, I said to myself theres no way he cuts all of them without pinching one or two for the chef before the meal is cooked. Nice meal as always. Was glad to see you in the woods this time. 😊
Definitely pinched a couple 😄👍. The Knorrs are nice. And much cheaper than a traditional dehydrated meal. This forest was beautiful but the ticks and the midges were not ideal. Always appreciate your comments! Hope you have a nice weekend
Knorrs were $1.00 here in the U.S. Inflation brought it up tp $1.25 now. It's still a bargain. Try the garlic shells one and add garlic, fresh mushrooms, red pepper flakes, S&P and some parsley. It's really good.
What a great day of adventure. I love your channel and look forward to your videos. This three part one is an extra treat. I know what midges are. 😱 I'd rather come across an occasional bear than battle a hell storm of midges. 😅 Wishing you success!
It’s nice to be able to finally do a multi day trip on the channel. I agree, I think I’d rather deal with hanging a bear bag than deal with the midges 😅. They sure are annoying. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you’re having a nice week.
Yeah I had to cut a lot of the footage from on the water. I was getting pretty bored of looking at myself on the packraft while editing 😂👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB

Have just spent the last week catching up on most of your videos - very enjoyable, thank you for making them (even if I did have to watch your crossing of Crib Goch from behind my fingers - I do NOT do heights)! This latest trip looks great (although I'm sorry you have to put up with midges! August in Scotland is notorious for them - I think if you go at other times of the year they are less prevalent). A couple of recommendations for you, if I may say, I think you're based somewhere fairly centralish in the UK so this might be doable for you, both are breweries. Ludlow Brewery is the first, pubs up and down the Welsh Marches stock it but the brewery has an online shop and do some cans (and lots of bottles for home). The second is Tynt Meadow - that's the UK's only trappist beer, brewed at Mount St Bernard Monastery (which is also worth a visit, I think - it's just NW of Leicester). I don't think they do cans, so that one would have to be bottles for home, unless you can find another way to take them with you? Lastly, a suggestion for your website: an FAQ might be a good idea, although I appreciate it takes time to build! :) Thanks again - looking forward to Part 2!
Definitely not an ideal time for the midges 👍. This trip was sort of last minute. An opportunity popped up to do a multi day trip so I just took it. Thank you for the recommendations I will have a look. The FAQ page is a good idea. I have been meaning to do a Q&A for some time. Really appreciate you watching. All the best
So much to unpack (forgive the pun). Inused to kayak and did the bridge to bridge race which is about 114km long. I felt everything whilst you were paddling. The wind, the currents, the blisters as my hands were always wet. I also could feel the weight of that pack-(what is it?). I now use trekking poles as my stability hasnt returned since the hip replacement, despite me doing everything to get it back. The poles really do help (as much as my ego doesnt like them) Looking forward to the next installment 💯 Looking forward to the next installment
This was definitely a big paddle with a small packraft but the wind helped a lot so I was very thankful for that. The pack with the raft weighed about 38lbs so not too bad but not light. Hiking with a trekking pole helps a lot. Anytime I’m hiking over 10 miles I try to bring them. Really appreciate you watching 👍. ATB
Ey up fella. Bit of an epic first day hey. Looking forward to seeing Pt2, hopefully you had better weather but this is Scotland and as you said, the forecast wasn't looking good. Ay a good weekend my friend 🙂👍
A big first day but I was very fortunate to have the wind to my back for the paddle. Unfortunately the weather for the first half of day two was pretty awful but by the evening it was beautiful! Really appreciate you watching. Hope you’re having a nice weekend!
I love how you use fresh ingredients instead of pure freeze dried like other outdoor youtubers do. Everything you cook looks so damn delicious. I also love that you cook with the Trangia alcohol stove and not just gas stoves, which may be more efficient but also boring. Cooking with wood and alcohol stoves has more magic to it! ☺
Glad you liked the meal. Just adding a few fresh ingredients to a dehydrated meal can definitely make it much more like having a real meal. Trangia cook kits are some of my favorite camping gear to cook on. Silent and they just work really well!. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! Hope you have a nice weekend.
My favorite video June 4th 2021 Now you came back again There is something about Scotland that you always want to come back over and over again, right? With blessings and all the suport i want to say to you-THANK YOU 🙏⚘
Hi!… Thanks so much for the wonderful videos you make and the time and effort you put into making them… such a pleasure to watch. I have a question about an item of gear you wear in some of your videos. You have a long sleeve charcoal grey/black base layer top…. Where did you get it and what are the materials it’s made from please?
I’m really glad you’re enjoying the videos. The long sleeve shirt I wear is from an outdoor retailer back in the states called REI. It’s made from 100% polyester.
Good vid. Man a real test with those dam midgees. We have black small mosquitoes that are horrible. All good. The road walking trail is a life saver. You get Fuji camera repaired? Now for the other direction, like paddling uphill. Next time. Good health with the kidney stones
Much appreciated. The midgets are even worse at camp on day two unfortunately. And the weather forces me to change my plans a bit. I did get the camera fixed a couple videos ago. I just had to purchase a new lens unfortunately. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend
My favourite outdoor/camping channel on youtube, thank you for these quality uploads. Whats your honest opinion on the Anaris? I'm looking for a light tent for Summer use mostly, hiking trails over 3-4 days. I'm torn between the Anaris and the Anjan 2. I do like my space so a solo tent is out!
That’s very kind of you just to say! I really like the Anaris because it has a lot of space and it can be very airy which is something I like in a summer tent. It’s really nice having both doors open on each side, although you can still easily close it down when the weather is not the best like it was on this first night on this trip. Opening both sides to get a breeze through the tent or look out at the view is really nice. The Anjan would probably be a bit faster to pitch but you can’t open it up like Anaris. Both fantastic options. I think it really just depends on if you hike with trekking poles. On longer distance multiday trips I usually do.
Alles Gute
Yes this is the Anaris 👍. I really like it when I need to go light but I also want some space. It’s great when the weather is warmer. Easy to pitch. And it does really well in the wind/rain like all Hillebergs.
Is this the ‘ranger’ alpacka? That thing looks badass. I was thinking about going with the ‘scout’ just due to the weight. I believe the scout is about 4 pounds. I think the conditions you’re in here are mostly about as bad as I’d ever be in with it. Something to cross a small body of water or go out on a lake with. Also you mention that the paddle you have is huge, I assume it’s around 200 cm or so?
This is the Alpacka Caribou. The conditions on the water were pretty rough at times, but as long as I kept the boat oriented in the right direction, everything was OK. I don’t remember saying the paddles was large but I believe this one is around 210 cm. Which seems just right 👍. I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you’re having a nice week.
Great video Goin Solo....you seem to be doing really well in that Alpacka raft. Did you purchase the small or medium? I am intrigued by their Exbition raft. I spent a week camping/kayaking at Lake Umbaygog in NH. Spectacular lake, scenery, moose etc. It would have been easier to pack my gear in a raft then it was in the kayak...lol...how careful do you need to be where rocks are concerned? Any thoughts about the raft now that you have used it a bit on some challenging journeys?
I have the Alpacka Raft Caribou. I was looking for one of the lightest boats that they offer that can carry a good bit of weight on the bow of the boat. I had trips like this in mind when I purchased it. It handles choppy weather very well and is light enough that I can hike with it. I was concerned at first with the durability just because pack rafting is relatively new to me but after using it for a while, I’ve come to trust it durability. I run it to the ground and have bumped into plenty of rocks and have had zero issues. It also tracks extremely well once your packs attached. I’ve come to really love it 👍😀.
Just watched this again .Question was there anyone else on the Island do you think ? as as i had headphones on while watching and listening when you are pulling up your raft around 28.14 It sounds like someone saying yo . Iv listened back a few times and it does sound like it .
I just listened to it. This wasn’t the island. This was actually the end of the loch. I was on the tip of a little peninsula and definitely didn’t see anyone and would’ve known if someone else was around when I was walking inland. It does kind of sound like yo, but that’s probably me just being influenced by what you said you heard 😂. There are all kinds of birds and things and when I’m editing if you cut the audio somewhere just right things can sound odd. Either way I really really appreciate you watching the video for a second time 👍😀. That’s awesome! I’m currently uploading part 3 on TH-cam right now. Our Internet is slow so it takes forever so it still probably won’t be available until Friday. Thanks again!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors When you listen on headphones this is what can happen sometimes .Hope it never freaked you out 😂We can pick up things we otherwise wouldn't without headphones .But looking forward to part three So far I'v really enjoyed Part one and two 👍
Dried food is really popular with TH-cam bushcrafter. In my opinion this method is very time consuming and needs a lot of energy. Recently I watched a video about sealing food airtight. You can put fresh food in a plastic bag, then suck out the air and seal the back. I wonder if this could be a way to have more fresh food on a longer trip.
It’s possible but even cooked food a lot of times needs some form of refrigeration, depending on what it is. I actually prefer cooking a meal from scratch but on these multi day trips doing something like this at least allows me to cook a little bit. I find cooking really enjoyable so it’s worth extra time and energy personally 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best.
I felt very fortunate to have the wind to my back. It made the paddle a lot faster. Would have been near impossible if I was going against the wind. Appreciate you watching.
That water was quite choppy ! I understand you staying close to shore in case of problem . Did you had a rope tied to the boat that you could grab if you went for a dip, and not loose the raft ? I usually wear half fingers gloves for paddling so I dont get blisters , but also to protect my hands from bugs . Great episode , looking forward to the next one , thanks
At times it definitely got a bit choppy but having the wind in my favor made it much easier. I have a rope tucked under my pack 👍. Blisters weren’t an issue thankfully but having half gloves would have been nice to help with the midges. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you’re having a nice weekend! ATB
Surprisingly durable actually! I was concerned at first because of how light the boat is but I have complete faith in it now. I’ve run it into rocks and aground and haven’t had any issues 👍.
The Highlands are such a stunning place. Wild camping is legal in Scotland. Aside from some specific areas like these islands which are not legal to camp on between May and August because of bird nesting. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.
I'm #161 to "Like" Are "midges," the same insect as "mosquitos"? A Cliff hanger - looking forward to Part 2. Warm Regards from far away Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
Midges are much much smaller than mosquitos. I think the people from the US might have something similar they call "no see ums". It is only the females that bite and feed on your blood. But there are so many of them that it can be really unpleasant with them around. Hi from Scotland UK
Hello from Scotland UK. Midges are much smaller than mosquitos and I think in the US you have "no see ums" which are similar. It is only the female that bites and feeds on your blood. This can cause an allergic reaction and because there are so many of them about it can be really unpleasant.
@@GoingSoloOutdoors the most beatifull area of Scotland, i was there in 2018 ., also in August, the worst period for midgies, better in june next time !
@@patterdalerednose8874 the campsite on day two was next level with the midges. At one point, my hands were covered in so many of them. It was like I was wearing gloves😅. It was horrible.
@@patterdalerednose8874 yeah I knew it wasn’t going be great, but I have two young kids and they took a trip with my wife to go visit grandma back in the states so I had the rare opportunity to actually go on a multi day trip. So I took it.
I don’t use fake noises. Everything either comes from the GoPro mic, iPhone mic or my Fujifilm XT4. 😂 It is what it is 👍. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB 😀
Midges and Ticks. no thanks. couldnt think of anything worse. Just scrubbed Scotland off my "places to visit" list. Grub looked great though and you certainly have an energy for life thats admirable. 👍
Being on these trips is definitely my happy place! The midges are terrible but I’m also here during the worst time of the year for them. 10 months out of the year they aren’t a problem though 😅. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Hmmm, watches, thinks about trip: wave surfing trip to Scotland…. Avoiding marooning on islands in a sea of fresh water. OK ….. of course, …..unusual but …….obvious adventure - only in hindsight. Watches more…. “Dehydrated meals” …..gasp…. What? What?!?!? Who are you, and what have you done with Todd?
Definitely a different trip 😂👍 Unfortunately dehydrated meals are typical if I’m going on a multi day trip in the summer. Especially when it takes a 10 hr drive and a night in a hotel to get here. I try to add a bit to them when I can though to make them a bit more palatable 😅. Really appreciate you watching! Hope you’re having a nice weekend. ATB
Pretty much just whatever I have on hand or whatever I’ve been given as a gift. I’m a pretty simple guy and usually don’t purchase anything too fancy or expensive. I like Irish whiskey so I usually have Sexton or Jameson at home.
Once again , excellent video . I really look forward to you posting new ones . I see you have the Nemo Tensor ( extreme ? ) and was considering it ( or the Thermarest xtherm nxt max ) how do you find it for durability and warmth ? . Thanks once again
I have had the Nemo Tensor insulated mat for over 6 years and have loved it so in the end I decided to go with the Nemo extreme conditions. I find it to be very warm but most importantly comfortable. I have no doubt the thermarest is extremely warm as well, but the comfort of that pad is what I was worried about so I just stuck with what I know to already be comfortable and got the Nemo. I’ve been very happy with it 👍
@GoingSoloOutdoors Thank you for the reply and off someone who actually uses it and not a paid for promotion . I currently have a Sea To Summit ( if anyone is interested )Etherlite Xt Extreme and while being very comfortable it definitely sleeps colder than the suggested R value . Once again thanks for your uploads , they are excellent
@@ShaunYoung-i3j I have an old sea to summit insulated pad (the neon green one). It’s comfortable but it’s a regular size so it’s just a bit too small. I prefer wide pads now

Awesome video. 13 miles in a canoe would be hard enough. Midges then tics, living the best life 😊. Look forward to the next and thank you.
Thanks! So on this first day, it was technically only 10 miles, but definitely a long way to paddle when the conditions were a bit rougher. The midges were an absolute nightmare. They actually get worse on day two at camp 😅. Really appreciate you watching!
Great video, as always.
Thank you! Really appreciate you watching 🙏😀
Great Adventure, really tough one too. 💪🏻
Glad you are enjoying the videos! Thank you for watching
Need to get me a packraft... so much to explore!! Great video!
Thanks! I am really liking how easy it is to get on and off the water with it 👍. And it's light enough that I can now do trips that were just not possible with my canoe. Really enjoying it. ATB
I love your videos. Keep uploading. Love from Manipur.
Thank you! Will do!
And grated cheese. Pecorino.😊
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Where do you get the Knorrs sides from? I cannot find them anywhere in UK.
@@madcat1007 you can get them on amazon. But I still had some in my stash of dehydrated food.

You are a bold and hardy soul :)
Too kind! Really appreciate you watching
The poles really do help (as much as my ego doesnt like them)
Looking forward to the next installment 💯
Looking forward to the next installment

You too me owd 🤜🤛

Poolewe is a nice village for Some good food and drinks ! Its nearby
I will keep that in mind if I ever make my way back to this area 👍

Great video as usual Todd. Thanks. What is the make of that Pack Raft?
Thanks! I have the Alpacka Raft Caribou

What is this name of the loch? Really beautiful place! Can't beat Scotland
Thanks! This first day I was paddling Loch Maree. Really pretty loch with some great islands. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
@GoingSoloOutdoors Thankyou mate appreciate that! Added to my list of places to visit!
@GoingSoloOutdoors Thank you for that.
Lot's of love and support from Pakistan. Please cook Briyani next time in your camping video💖

Alles Gute
Is that the Anaris tent please? How do you find it? I love my little candle. 😍 Another beautiful video, thank you 🙏
Yes this is the Anaris 👍.
4th 😂…. as always… worth waiting 👍👍👍👍
👍😀 really appreciate your continued support! Hope you have a nice weekend!
@GoingSoloOutdoors thank you as always, my friend. It's great to see you enjoying your new watercraft.
Certainly would not like to paddling on maree on that that winds brutal when it picks up ther been on it many a time we a hybrid kayak
ATB
That's great 😊😊
👍😀
How durable is that pack raft? Have you had to make repairs? Maybe you could do a pro and cons video as my canoe gets heavier as I get older.
Surprisingly durable actually! I was concerned at first because of how light the boat is but I have complete faith in it now. I’ve run it into rocks and aground and haven’t had any issues 👍.
Thanks for the reply.
The scenery is always incredibly beautiful.
BTW I’m not sure, but do you need permission to camp in places like this?
The Highlands are such a stunning place. Wild camping is legal in Scotland. Aside from some specific areas like these islands which are not legal to camp on between May and August because of bird nesting. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you have a nice weekend.

👍👍 definitely unpleasant
