An early sound short of major historical import. Although it is a fictionalized Harlem nightclub scene, it features Chick Webb playing for the major dancers of the Savoy Ballroom. Three couples perform the latest dance styles of 1929, primarily influenced by partner Charleston. The last couple is Shorty Snowden and his partner Maddie Purnell. They are just terrific, although their style may look dated to us.
Note how Snowden introduces Breakaway steps to the closed-form Charleston and you’ll feel like you are witnessing the birth of the Lindy Hop, which, in fact, was the name that Snowden gave to the dance he was doing. The couple exits exuberantly with a Cake Walk.
Music by the Savoy Ballroom house band, Chick Webb and his Orchestra.
The emcee is white vaudeville comic and eccentric dancer James Barton performing in blackface. He had a long career in film and tv, and is best remembered as Kit Carson in ‘The Time of Your Life’ (1948).

Fantastic dancers. I never realized how technical and seemingly complex the footwork was. This video is a gem. So I glad footage of the ingenuity and talents of our people has been documented and preserved. 😍👋❤️

just slow the speed down to 1/2 in the settings and you can see how incredibly complicated the footwork is especially for couple number 3.

As an almost 30 year old, I was taught about racism is school but seeing black face like this really shows you just how much racism was woven into the fabric of this country. Minstrel shows make me really sad too. It is very important to protect and remember history like this but man is it uncomfortable to watch.

Yes, it’s very uncomfortable especially being a Black person. But we don’t make laws to ban it! But when we teach true history, there are people who says they’re uncomfortable seeing what their people did; therefore, they ban it, because they don’t want their feelings hurt!

yeah, this is pretty bizarre a scene, i guess you would have to watch the short film from which is excerpted. i was actually brought here because of the guy in blackface, his name is james barton and i just watched an episode of the old tv show 'the naked city' that he stars in as a bowery bum in the 1950s, also worth watching, season 1, episode 18. apparently bing crosby placed him in his list of ten favorite entertainers ever. this guy was performing since the 1890s and was considered an early jazz dancer.

What is not mentioned and what should be mentioned, is, the other racial slur, After Seben is supposed to be After Seven but it was written that way due to what many thought was the way African-American pronounced "Seven" (sigh).
