First dive trying out the AOI UWL-03 wide angle lens on a Gopro Hero 11. The lens provides a greater FOV with sharper edges and much closer focus distance.
Its great. Only wish it worked with raw photos but most wet lenses have the issue of not being wide enough to use full sensor. As for 16:9 wide though it is awesome
@@seanpe80 I think this lens with go pro cameras is really aimed at the point and shoot video market rather than stills. There are better systems for shooting stills anyway where you need to access all the camera controls. Proof of the pudding is in your clip of the wobby - it's simply stunning! There is another AOI user over here in SA - Andy over on Crab e cam - really nice stuff. th-cam.com/channels/fG69Gw0vmpaC3mnfKWMdFw.html
Thanks. The wobby is quite a regular on that reef and she is big. I want to get a shot with someone beside her to actually show how large she is. She can get a little grumpy though. Ill check out Andy.
Just checked out Andy's and your channels and subscribed to both! Thanks. If you ever in Portland, Vic then let me know and if weather plays kind I can try and find you my friend the Wobby
@@seanpe80 Thanks for the kind offer. We don't get down that way much these days but dived around the wharf at Portland and on the Emily S when we lived in Mt Gambier. We did our CDAA examinations with none other than Frank Ziegler! My older brother worked on the Emily as engineer and rebuilt the Crossley diesel engine on it when it worked roughy fishing around Tassie and in the Bight. It was owned by Tony Santic of Makybe Diva fame at the time. I've only had the lens for a short while and plan to post a few videos down the track.
I shoot in 5k60 wide with the AOI wide angle lens and 5k60 narrow with a macromate mini both in 16:9. Neither will work in 8:7 if thats what you are using but at 16:9 it should be fine.
Hi, I know you have a video on the macromate mini but was wondering if it’s the flip one from backscatter. I have a GoPro 11 and was wondering if you recommend? The footage you get is awesome. Thanks
Hi. Yep I have the flip system from Backscatter. I only use the macromate mini lens from it though and the actual flip section. I have turned my AOI lens into a 55mm thread so I can use that on the flip system as I like to have option of wide or macro and not taking lenses off and on underwater and storing them somewhere. I currently use the gopro 11. I certainly recommend the macromate mini and the AOI 03 lens. I don't use the red filters at all. I would get lights and a tray first. The macromate without lights is not very good. Glad you like the footage.
@@seanpe80 Hi, awesome footage !! :-) I am trying to look for a similar system for my gopro as well to swap between macro and wide. Can I confirm that for your setup, you used the backscatter flip with macromate mini +15 on one, and FLIP FILTERS 55mm filter holder on the other? And for the AOI UWL-03 you got it with the AOI 55mm Threaded Lens Adapter? Can I check with you that the AOI 55mm Threaded Lens Adapter is compatible with the FLIP FILTERS 55mm Filter Holder for the FLIP system? Could not find anywhere online that has a similar setup as yours and would like to confirm it is compatible before making the purchase 🙂 Thank you so much once again!!
Hi, yes thats what I have. Its not perfect but it does work. From my googling and working it out I could only really see a couple of options. 1. be stuck with one lens for the dive and keep installing different brackets each time. 2. Get the AOI macro lens but I wasn't sure that it was going to work as well as the macromate and you would need to swap lenses underwater and put one somewhere or 3. Do what I did and add a 55mm adaptor and use the flip system. The issue you will find is the AOI is so large that it won't flip back and lock in place. You will need to hold it back but it is out of frame. I can do it with one hand on my dual handle system. I have thought about adding a rubber band or similar to loop over the handle but I haven't done that yet as the lens does have a little eyelet on it where you could add it to. Hope that helps.
@seanpe80 awesome, thanks for the clarification! finding out that an eyelet exists on the lens definitely convinced me to get the flip system as opposed to having 2 different AOI lenses and mounting on and off the dive tray.. the mounts on the trays aren't cheap as well haha have you experimented keeping the macromate on the vertical axis and the AOI on the horizontal?
Hi, I have tried it both ways. My preference is the way you mentioned. Its easier to keep the aoi lens from swinging in the horizontal axis then falling down. Its quite a heavy lens in comparison to the rest. Some of ease will depend on how much space you have to the tray handle. The one Im using it will touch the left handle so I can hold with my fingers. The other thing I am thinking of trying is getting another tray that has adjustable widths and see if I can get the handles at a width that the lens will sort of get stuck lightly by the handle so it stays in place if that makes sense.
Not sure. I hope it will but given the next GoPro will likely be here in 4months it might be worth waiting to see. This lens isn't specifically built for GoPro so as long as someone makes an attachment and they don't suddenly make the camera larger than it should.
I have a backscatter flip system and I turned the AOI into a 55mm thread so I can attach to the flip system. Its a little large but it still lets me choose between the AOI wide, no lens or macromate lens just by flipping them
impressive lens, ty for sharing
Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it
Yes I have one on a go pro 10 - they are excellent especially with twin video lights.

What settings are you using on your gopro? I just got the same AOI lense but am getting an annoying vignette in the corners?

@@seanpe80 that sounds perfect. I wonder why GoPro don't make something themselves. The AOI and backscatter accessories are so expensive!
Wide or linear?
I mainly use wide. It works with linear. It just wont work with superview
