  • Being at Sipadan last week and seeing how the fish life has improved after years of what seemed to me like decline has given me renewed hope that the ocean can recover if we let it.
    This project was shot entirely on a GoPro Hero 10 and AOI UWL-03 wide wet lens. The camera was housed in a Hugyfot Vision XS which has a fantastic 5 inch screen that's great for framing shots. I left the production camera at home and travelled light.
    The amazing GoPro action camera has been a popular choice for divers. It's tiny, simple to use, shoots high frames rates, handles low light fairly well and doesn't cost a fortune compared with other cameras and housings. However, I always found the field of view too narrow underwater for my liking. The AOI wet lens fixes this by giving the GoPro a corrected FOV of 140°. Corners are sharp and the image is clear and not distorted. Close focus is also drastically improved.
    I'll be speaking about this setup at the Malaysia International Dive Exhibition (MIDE) this weekend. If you are visiting, please do drop by the AOI booth to check for the Q&A times. Alternatively, you can look for me at the Fourth Element booths.
    Many thanks to GoPro for the camera and accessories, and to AOI for the wet lens and all the mounts. The 5 dives at Sipadan would not have been this good without the expertise of Global Sipadan Dive Adventures and of course my gear sponsors at Fourth Element.

    Definitely powerful for video. If you're not going for stills I feel like this is maybe the best option for me, although a budget solution. I see that Backscatter has a housing and 140 lens for 300 or so dollars, swappable filters too. The only issue is overheating I suppose but the compacts also struggle with this.

      Yes! The AOI UWL-03 lens can work with the original GoPro housing! And backscatter has a mount for it which will allow for their filters too! 👍

    I wonder if you can help me out, I’m form Ecuandor and I’m trying to start on underwater photography/videography but I can’t afford an DSRL camera and housing. I recently got a GoPro hero10, where can I get one of those housing? And how do you mount the lens to it?

    hi bro. may I know which video light did you use? thanks

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey bro. I used 2x Fisheye Japan 10,000 lumens lights, mostly at 50 to 75% power. To be honest, it's not powerful enough to light up entire schools... But then again even more powerful lights wouldn't.
      I'm about to test using Magic Filters in combination with a new video light that is high CRI, single COB led, 6000 lumens and has an ambient light filter. The light is tiny and has a really wide soft beam angle... More than most other brands. And the best thing.... It's incredibly affordable compared to everything else on the market with similar specs. Spare batteries are also inexpensive.
      I plan to test early Nov in Maldives and late Nov in Raja Ampat with various filter combinations. I have high expectations and will recommend if all works well! It should give a much better result than this.

      @@KayBurn But is it possible, I read that there are certain depths that needed filters so the colors aren't too blue.

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but a filter does help. When set at native white balance, you can still edit and bring out some of the colours. A red filter making it easier, however it won't work at depths deeper than 20 to 25m and shallower than 5m, things get reddish.
      If you use a video light and it's powerful enough to reach your subject, you don't need a red filter either.

      Just go and get one with a tray, go pro 10 is just fine. You also need a couple of medium power video lights to add colour up close. No video lights work at long distance anyway. You won't look back, this is an excellent point and shoot system for moderate outlay compared to other housed camera systems. Shoot on extended battery with go pro 10 and remember to remove the lens and swipe all the bubbles off the go pro housing lens and back and front of the AOI lens when you get in the water.
