This is heartbreaking. She was my neighbor in the early 2000s in a Buckhead highrise condo building. She was really sweet. Because I had a little son at that time, I'd host playtime for the resident little kids in the building. She would always take an interest in those moments and I could tell she was happy to see all the condo kids play together.

As a teenager in the 80s, I saw her in so many magazines. BEAUTIFUL!!! She was one of the few Black models I would see. Her presence spoke positive volumes to me. Wow 61 years old is young. May she rest in Heaven. 🤍🤍🤍

I'm so in shock right now. Gail was the IT girl of modeling back in the 80s and 90s, even before Naomi. I remember her being the top model for Espirit magazine back in the days. She was so uniquely beautiful, with that exotic Jamaican heritage. Both her parents are Jamaican and I believe one of them was Chinese Jamaican. She had a look a like sister that did a little modeling as well. Im so heart broken right now. My condolences to her family. Thank you for representing us when there were very few of us in modeling back then. You will be so missed! 🙏❤🇯🇲
I believe that’s the magazine I had on my mind… Epirit. I had mentioned Elle Magazine in another post but whatever it was, I loved seeing her and I’m saddened to hear that she’s gone. She was only a few years older than me😔🙏🏾💝
As a male model of the 80s I remember her image on so many covers.Starting out as a Model of color...it encouraged me to continue. I got to model in Japan New Caledonia and at home on the runway in New Zealand.. BLESS YOU GIRL

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Gail O'Neill. She is gone way too soon. I remember her from her modeling days in the 80s and 90s. She was everywhere. She was in ALL of the magazines back then. She was so beautiful. May she rest in peace.

As a child of a mother who was light in complexion, as an African American I was raised by her to believe that my complexion or dark features were not as pretty as her own. My mother was a vein woman and favored only light skinned girls in my grade and would compare me to them on all occasions.
Yet, when I saw this beautiful brown skinned model in magazines who had features like my own, I believed her to be beautiful and therefore started to see myself as if I too could grow up to look like her. As a youth, I began seeing her more and more and began styling my hair like her and choosing stylish clothes based on her ads. Soon, people would give me compliments and tell me I was pretty. My mother's views never changed, but my ideas of the society we lived in did. I learned that skin complexion means nothing, beauty is beauty and its universal. My mother became resentful of the compliments I got over the years, but I learned to forgive her. But Gail was like the mother I never had because through her influence she influenced me so much to be the beautiful woman I always wanted to be. Thank you.
I'm glad you realized your brown skin is beautiful and claimed it. Your story about your Mom's negative judgment of darker skin tones is sad. That's what it's so important for us to see brown and black models like Gail O'Neil highlighted in the media. Up until the 1980s, predominately white or light skinned models were highlighted as the standard of beauty. Beauty comes in all hues.❤

@ChassityNOubre_88 I do the opposite of my own mother with my family. There are many Black and brown dolls in our home because of the lack of compassion my mother showed to me with my own complexion. It is her own cross to carry now, not mine. My own family is not very close to her because of how she views their skin. But, that is not their problem, it is her problem alone to carry. And it does carry weight in the Black community with the outdated ideas of a colorist.
I remember seeing her in a magazine when I was a teenager. I was blown away by her natural beauty. Her thick pretty hair and her facial beauty was unmatched. May she RIP.
As a young girl growing up I loved her and thought she was just breathtakingly beautiful. My heart aches to hear of her passing at such a young age. May she rest in peace and blessings to her family.
Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this. I had the pleasure of meeting Gail in the early 90s in NYC and she was lovely and gracious. She was a striking beauty and one of the most visible models back in the day. This is very said to hear and I send condolences to her family.
She was one of my all-time favourite models and I had illustrated her from 1986 all the way up to the 2010s. Gail herself happened upon some of my sketches on Facebook years ago and was so kind and complimentary to me. She even showed them to her mother and told me that she loved them and even how I captured something that many photographers hadn't- and she worked with the best, so that was a huge compliment! What other model as famous as she was would have done any of that? She was beautiful, inside and out.
Gail O'Neil was an inspiration for me as a teen in the 80s who was going to F.I.T. for fashion design. Gail was modeling for Willi Smith( I was a Willi Smith fanatic, also because people always said i looked like him)and was featured in his then Look Book for his collections. She was definitely a runway girl. She never allowed her hair to be cut, colored, or straightened. I met her at Parsons School of Fashion at a symposium on being black in gashion
She was so sweet and very nice, but you could not deny her beauty. This was a stunning human being. She modeled/walked for 1 of my favorite designers of all time Azzedine Alaia. A truly stunning, smart, professional, and all around inspiring woman. Rest in peace Gail O'Neil
I met Gail at her family's home in NY. I worked with her brother Randy at IBM one summer and we both studied engineering at Stanford University. She was the most down to earth beauty even before she started her modeling career. Devastating news and my sympathies to her family.

She was definitely the most beautiful black model of the 80’s. Her face was pure perfection. The only other black models who followed just a few years later and reached her exquisite beauty were Beverly Peele and Brandi Quinones. No one else. She was a true goddess. ❤
There was a famous Revlon tv commercial in the early 90’s with Claudia, Helena, Cindy and Gail and she was by far the most beautiful of all. None of the other three could reach her beauty. However they only showed her for 2 seconds. Totally unfair. All that makes me think that the Supers (except for Christy) were not always the most beautiful but just the luckiest. So sad to hear the passing of Gail, the first vogue I ever owned was British Vogue March 1986 with Gail on the cover with a fantastic editorial by Patrick Demarchelier, it opened my eyes to a new world, so thank you Gail for the art you gave us and thoughts with your family at this time 🤍🤍

This woman, was honestly a natural beauty, even to this day. I didn't remember her at first, until I saw pictures shown here from her modeling career. She was just beautiful. Like Karen Alexander, Gail was a great model. She never seemed to blow up like the "supers" but that may have been by dsign. I just saw her on the runway at Enrico Coveri and she was fabulous. And that hair!!! Anyway, i am so sad to hear this. May she rest in peace.

Back in the 80's I used to watch the Phil Donahue talk show. The late fashion designer Willie Smith was the guest and he did a fashion show. Gail came out black outfit and Phil Donahue actually walked up onto the little runway, took her hand and asked her name. She told him and then he said "you're Beautiful". She gave a little laugh and thanked him.
