OXFORD on our Brompton bikes AND the Villages Wiltshire Man

  • Taking advantage of the portable nature of the Brompton folding bike, my friend Dave and myself took the bus ninto Oxford, then toured around the city and cycled the 30 miles back home through some of Oxfordshires lovely villages.
Oxford is famous for it's history, it's architecture, it's college's and it's hospitals.
I personally am very greatful to the skilled surgeons and staff at the Radcliffe infirmary because it was there back in 1993 that I had neuro surgery to remove a type of brain tumour called Vestibular Schwanoma aka Acoustic nueroma.
Oxford has a completely different feel to my home town of Swindon which by comparison I can only bescribe as a "Dump". which is a shame when you consider the history associated with Swindon!
I think a lot has to do with how the town planners went about their jobs, they wrecked the place and pulled down or infilled some of the "Old places" and Canals that were here.
Welldone Swindon council. To coin and Americanism...."You suck!"
Music used in this video was all from the TH-cam audio library

Loving these videos with you and Dave… the hug from your missus at the start was so lovely… and the candid story about the infirmary too, wonderful. I think that one of the reasons (… there’s lots of others too, honest!!) I’m really enjoying your stories is that they do remind me of being a small lad watching ‘Out of Town’ with the late Jack Hargreaves back in the 1970’s… loved those programs and the social history they documented… great stuff Sandy, thanks for sharing! 🤗👍

I don't know your outlook on life before your illness but the threat of death must put everything into perspective.
Another big fan of Morse, read the books and watched all the TV episodes. John Thaw hated driving that old Jaguar, it was not in very good mechanical condition.
I hope you drag Dave out for another ride on the Bromptons.

Thank you for responding, you undoubtedly are and it is clear that you are very young, but not all of us reach your youth after 50 years. I hope to reach your age and much beyond.....far away imitating and reaching the trips you make.
You are almost 62 years old today, well, then we are not that far away, I just turned 55, little difference and since I discovered Brompton and bought my M6L Red House Explorer, all my outings are now an adventure.
Thank you for responding and for your youth, for spreading your joy and happiness for life on a Brompton.
Please don't waste your energy with your friend and share more videos on Brompton, have a good weekend with your family. Greetings.

Great seeing you and Dave out again. Very interested in your gearing conversion. My Dahon also has a 3speed SA hub that's a bit too over geared. Won't mind losing a bit of top speed as like the Brompton high speeds and 16 inch wheels are a bit sketchy.

Hi from Suffolk…..I nearly bought a Brompton but I didn’t get on with the small wheels. I also don’t like the gearing ratios, i set up one of my other bikes with the same 3 speed/crank to cog ratio but with 700c wheels thus it went further per one revolution of the crank…..and that was that! folding bikes are great for trains and buses though. keep safe and well👍

    Hello,
Thank you so much for these wonderful videos. There is something so calming and therapeutic about them!
I live in Connecticut and I’m considering buying an A Line to keep in my trunk so I can explore the local trails anytime I get a chance.
You put some serious miles on the A Line and I’m wondering how you feel about the gearing. Do you find yourself having to walk up most hills or are the 3 gears enough for most terrain? I don’t mind pushing the bike when it gets very steep and I’m in no rush, but I’m wondering if you ever feel like you’re missing a gear or two?
Anyways, thanks again for the great videos!

Radcliffe famous for number of pioneering moments in medical history occurred at the hospital. Penicillin was first tested on patients on 27 January 1941

      Hi Denis,
Penicillin discovered in September 1928 by Alexander Fleming, it was first used as a cure when George Paine treated eye infections with it in 1930.
One of the first people to be treated in Scotland with Penecillin was a young boy called Norman Jack from Aberdeen, that was in the 1930's. Norman was to become my Dad!

Another of your fantastic videos Sandy.Really enjoyable to see all those little villages. Some pretty decent fitness levels from the pair of you too, covering that distance. With regards to the saddle being uncomfortable, you might get on with a Brooks b17 saddle which is pretty comfortable, and it gets even better with age as it moulds to your sit bones. I’ve got one on my Brompton.

Nice day out there. The bus came in handy. In Wales we get to travel for nowt with the bus pass. The problem is, there aren't many buses in the more rural parts. Love Dave's dry sense of humour, a good bloke.

Another excellent video on a trip on your Brompton in and around Oxford. We are indeed very lucky that the Radcliffe Infirmary saved your life. I am going to have another MRI as I have lost all hearing in my left ear, get headaches and sometimes lose my balance. A vestibular Schwanoma is hearing related around the nerve that supplies the brain with sound signals from the ear drum. I had one about 6-7 maybe 8 years ago and they ie Addenbrookes (Cambridge) hospital couldn't see anything amiss. Anyway my hearing is now very bad, no hearing in one ear, 50-60% in the other.
How about Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury Tor for your next adventure on your Brompton with Dave?
All the best to you Sandy.

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  ปีที่แล้ว

Good luck Alex I hope you get the all clear. I had a vestibular Schwanoma (acoustic nueroma) excised in Oxford, it was becoming lethal and compressing my brain stem. The couldn't get it all out and there has been some regrowth, my last scan was a few months ago and not yet at the point where more surgery is needed. The one good thing about these types of tumours is that they are slow growing.

Another enjoyable watch, Sandy. I heard mention of beer but didn't see it materialise . . . . maybe you didn't work-up enough of a thirst! 🍺
I have one advantage over you, and it's definitely not my level of fitness. Having reached the ripe old age of 66, I now have a bus pass. 😁
    (No Brompton, though.)

      Hi Steve,
Knife finished now, just waiting for the sheath to dry and then apply finsih to that. We did stop at the Trout for a beer but they only had Doom bar on tap, it was a nice pint but I would have preferred a local beer

Thanks again for sharing, enjoyed it immensely.
I think all the Bromptons start with a 50t chainring unless your order specifies +8% (54t) os - 12% (44t).
My dissapointment is that they are not more off road capable, but what they do, an despite this shortcoming, I am thankful for the enjoyment they afford.
    Thanks again
    Take care
