How To Grow and Propagate Bamboo from Culm Cuttings

  • There are numerous ways to grow and propagate bamboo, however, not all methods work with each type.
    Every bamboo can be grown and propagated by taking divisions, as I've shown in my previous videos. In this video, recorded in March 2017, I demonstrate how to make culm cuttings which when buried will produce roots and thus grow into a new bamboo.
    Now mind you this method does not work for any running species of bamboo, and it does not work for all types of clumping bamboos. The bamboo used in this video is Dendrocalamus validus, a large tropical clumping bamboo native to Asia. I've also successfuly performed this method on Bambusa dissimulator, Bambusa lako, Bambusa vulgaris and Bambusa vulgaris vittata.
    Sorry about the video volume in the beginning. I guess being that far away from the GoPro means I need to speak up next time!

    I think it may help to start rooting if you scrape the outer area around the node. (It was recommended in another YT video). I haven't tried it, but would give it a shot if I were attempting to do this.

      Sorry to say but this method only work with clumping types of bamboo. You can however take divisions of the running bamboo that you can repot and start your own stands with. Cut the culm down to about 6 feet, trim off excess branching and leaves and dig in a circle at least 12-18" around the culm I'd possible to get as much rhizome as you can

    • @iivirulentii
      @iivirulentii 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fatbuddhaboo Aw, that's unfortunate...I already potted the cuttings I took so I think I'll just keep them and see what happens. I tried to dig up and pot a rhizome about a month ago, but it was only about 1.5 feet tall and dried up almost immediately. Unfortunately, I don't know if my garden can house something as large as a 12-18" potted 6 foot bamboo at the moment! I appreciate the information though!

    • @fatbuddhaboo
      @fatbuddhaboo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iivirulentii you could try cutting it down shorter, won't hurt it and it might even improve the chance for success. Try two or three feet with as much rhizome as you can get. Once potted or in in the ground keep the ground wet (but not flooded) by watering every day. Should survive.

    • @fatbuddhaboo
      @fatbuddhaboo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure how I missed this comment. I've successfully propagated Multiplex varieties using the whole culm burial method. Simply cut an entire culm from the mother plant, trim the branching to leave one or two at each node, then bury the whole culm a few inches in the ground, leaving the branches sticking up. Rooting should occur in a few months. Can't recall what time of year it best...trial and error may be in order to achieve success.

    Does orientation matter when planting? I had a cutting with 2 nodes, but must have planted it upside down because the new branches from the top node are pointed downwards

    • @fatbuddhaboo

      I always try to ensure the orientation of the cutting when planted is the same as it was when it was attached to the parent plant.

    • @fatbuddhaboo

      Good question! What I've done in the past is build a frame with PVC that is big enough to cover the container(s) the cuttings are in then cover that with plastic to keep the humidity and moisture up. In doing this though you must make sure it gets no direct sunlight as this would result in you "cooking" the cuttings.

    • @fatbuddhaboo
      @fatbuddhaboo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trojan550 Then unfortunately the answer is no. Bamboo in the Phyllostachys family do not propagate in this manner. And it is not a clumper either, it is a runner. If it's a newer planting the new culms will pop close to the original division, but eventually it will start popping up in all directions 6 feet or more away. With runners the old saying is first year it sleeps, second year it creaps, third year it leaps!
      The way to get more bamboo is through pure division of an existing culm and rhizome mass or digging a section of rhizome that is running and replanting it
