As a frenchman subscribed to your channel Andy i must say i took the Battle of Crecy reference the very wrong way 😂
The french troops basically got massacree by the rate of fire and the reach of the english longbows. Some of the british soldiers skeletons were found to have deformations caused by the force required to even use them.
On top of which came the church prohibition of crossbows which required far less training and was often carried by young unprepared « soldiers ». Farmboys essentially.
To us french ppl. Bows and english people are pretty hard to tell apart. We would cut fingers to any archer captured, this is where ✌️ comes from.
I liked you guys better with sub 12s.
Greetings from an old enemy ✌️

Crossbows only look scary. They are a lot of fun to use. Especially because there are no regulations on their power. You are golden, as long as you don't point it at anyone when it's cocked and don't have your finger anywhere near the string when it's cocked/during the cocking process 🙂

My pal from school had a crossbow back in 1976. We shot it at a target on the fence. One bolt went through the target, through the fence and into the front wing of his Dad's Rover P5. One of the many occasions we got into a lot of trouble!
These things demand a lot of respect.....

My sister used to shoot a recurve bow in the 80’s, and I used to take her to the club and watch. They used to shoot between 50 and 100 yards and were really accurate considering wind effects. No wonder the English longbow was a feared weapon.

As an Australian it's nice to see something on AAR that I can actually buy without a gun license. Fortunately archery gear, excluding crossbows, are readily available to the masses & we can even hunt with them.
For the pellet fanatics in your audience, there have been a number of products released over the years that attach to bows to enable you to fire pellets instead of arrows. The most recent of which was the Airow Gun, which was available in .50 & .68 caliber for paintball &.22 caliber for pellets.

Really enjoyed the crossbow/archery feature. Shooting is a broad church and I've shot everything from homemade crossbows and bows, similar commercially made, through air guns, shotguns and S1 firearms. Way back in the 50s we used to take our bows down to the sports field to practice; there was always a crowd who wanted a go, no police required, (unless they fancied a go too!). Sadly we live in an age where people are happy to run about shouting "ban it" at every opportunity and I understand that crossbows are in their sights currently (no pun intended). We need to stress the fun element of these things to counteract this. Keep up the good work, and thanks for all you do.

Hi Andy, there are 2 more developments to the bows and crossbows recently...
A guy in TH-cam called Joerg Sprave invented a magazine system for both crossbows and bows...
These are available commercially from several gun shops and outdoor shops.
There is one crossbow that cocks like an under lever Springer and has a capacity of up to 7 shots, and even speed loader clips to help reload quickly, this is the EK Archery Adder and with the strongest bow limb attached can generate close to 50fpe!
After the crossbow versions he then turned to development of a system for bows.. again EK Archery took his design and went forward with a compound bow system that has a 6 arrow magazine. The compound bow magazine system allows about 1 shot per second, more than twice as fast as the crossbow version.
Finally, as you probably can guess, the Chinese have copied the system and produce add on versions of the compound bow system and the overall price dropped by about £100, for bow and magazine...
There is even a ball bearing shooter available that uses 15mm steel balls, even at 2 at a time when using a bow with over 40lbs pull!

I had a toy bow and arrow set, with suckers on the end, when I was a kid. It didn’t take me long to work out you could take the suckers off and sharpen the ends, with a pencil sharpener. It was just a case of wrapping a little bit of wire around the end, to add a bit of weight. No cardboard box was safe at 10 yards.😂 Health and safety wasn’t an issue in the 1960s LOL. It was great fun though.

This was a great “first impressions” review of a sport that I came to love over a decade ago.. thank you! Quick note about string releases though if I may…. A leather finger release tab for recurve bows and a simple wrist strap mounted trigger release for compound bows will help greatly in getting a clean release, these help by not “plucking” the bow string which gives a cleaner flight of the arrow.
If a future video does come, I really hope it will contain some of my all time favourite bow shooting “Clout” (as seen in many medieval movies, all the archers lined up, arrows aimed high at a target some 200m away!) all the arrows loosed at the same time resulting in a hail of arrows falling out of the sky. Honestly of all the tournaments I’ve ever shot (more than I can count) this sight always makes me smile!

Great video, would love to see more, maybe pistol crossbows which have become really popular and are a "little" more garden friendly. The main issue with crossbows is they are really easy to get hold of, cheap and no rfd requirements...but no where to shoot them, other than in your garden, if its big enough. Archery GB clubs can't / wont touch them them as rules and insurance won't permit it. No pest control reason for landowners to allow use on their land and virtually no specific crossbow clubs. I'll still keep buying them though as they are great fun! An enterprising land owner could make a fortune opening a crossbow range.

Thanks Andy, great episode. I love all forms of shooting and my own particular interest is the longbow. I had my own made for me back in the day. It had a draw-weight of 67lbs which when compared to the old war bows was feeble. Those boys would have been 140lbs and more. They had to be to throw the massive arrows they used against enemy forces. They’re also a different discipline altogether, with no sighting system at all aim is intuitive which is why it was law to practice at the butts every Sunday. A great sport to get into.

Hi Andy, great video I highly enjoyed it. I was actually into archery and crossbow target shooting before I discovered air rifles, so I have a lot of love for this kind of thing. I find it bizarre that I can buy a 400+ FPS crossbow no problem up here in Scotland, but require an AWC to own a sub 12 ft/lb air rifle, which are significantly less dangerous than a big crossbow. I've even bought my daughter a 10lb junior bow and she really enjoys shooting targets in the back garden. Big fan of the channel, cheers!

Having been a keen archer for most of my 50 odd yrs i would recommend the sport to anyone &everyone. The one major restriction is the lack of facilities and the horrendous lengths of waiting lists to join a club. U would think that in the home counties and South East this shouldn't be an issue but due to range sizes and the number of participants able to shoot at any given time, many clubs restrict membership to ensure adequate range time. I've been a thru the hip amputee for the last 11yrs &know of only one disabled archery club in the whole of Sussex. I shoot recurve and flat back longbow & whilst much enjoyment may be had shooting in a 30meter back garden with a decent back net &stop, there is nothing quite like sending a heavy field arrow a quarter mile down range &hitting the target. At the end of the day it's the same game, windage and elevation, throw in a goodly helping of muscle memory and plenty of enthusiasm and before to long u'll be amazed what's possible. Sending arrows semi stratospheric over half a mile with a 90lb longbow on target.. there's nothing else like it! Thanks for all the great content. Cheers

If you are going to be serious about backstops (not the target bosses/stacks/supports you call backstops) please contact your nearest archery shop for backstop curtains. Proper archery backstop curtains work in a completely different, more effective (and less destructive) way than all the those thick railway sleepers. The other reason you should use curtains is that they are much taller. The most dangerous misses are the ones that go over the top of the target. Your curtain should be at least twice. preferably three times as high as the target supports you are using. It should also be at least four times as wide. On longer distances and higher power devices you should consider intermediate side curtains and even intermediate curtains to prevent arrows accidentally loosed too high from travelling down range over the final backstop curtain.

Very interesting. Would like to see more on the subject. Either bow or crossbow would be fine.
I have the Adder with magazine. Super fun but taming the power is not easy and using it indoors is much more dangerous compared to our low powered air tools. I put a 90lbs limb (comes with 130lbs) on mine but I still need two thick archery back stops to catch the bolt reliably. I also have a 190lbs limb here but have not been able to test it. I will not try that inside of my apartment.

This review has come at a great time. I have been looking at archery over the past month but could not find a good review to help choose a starter bow. So thanks for this one.

Brilliant review Andy, I have a compound bow that fires ball bearings and a crossbow stile sling shot that fires 8mm ball bearings and holds up to 40 in its mag, tons of fun 🤘😀🤘

The biggest issue I have where I live near Coventry is finding a club that will let you use a crossbow .It seems that most Archery clubs Won't. I know that you couldn't cover everything here but it is important to lubricate both the rail and string of a crossbow with the correct lubricant. Nice video.

Great overview. Thank you. I love my archery. It's great fun. Two very welcoming clubs I can recommend (in the Scottish central belt) for great fun and excellent tuition are Beecraigs Archers near Linlithgow and West Lothian Archers.

I had a archery set for years great fun my son my partner, now wife every thing even kevlar back stop netting. Of course i up graded my recurve bow to a good one great family fun all day long. Not cheap but buy quality and it will last along time. Get a cheap wax block to keep your stings in great shape as they will seperate or try too, just run it up and down a few times lightly no pressure needed.
