The vibe is from Richard Carpenter. He's the producer. He was one of the first to use the 8 track to have Karen sing lead and harmony. He always did the arrangements. But none of it would have happened without that voice. Still one of the greatest.

They called her "One Take, Karen." She never rehearsed on the way to studio. Just nailed it the first time. And the drums too at the same time. She became the lead singer only reluctantly. Her home was behind the drums. The rest is just so sad. No one compares to the talent this then 20-year-old woman had!

One of my favourite things about this channel has been witnessing the change in Brad over time. 18 months ago he would have been blank faced and just not getting or feeling this tune and now his face lights up listening to these new genres and artists that he would never have listened to years ago. They say that music is a language that your brain learns and matures to and if you listen to enough, *everybody* will end up understanding and loving jazz. I'm 56 and not quite there yet, I guess I need to listen to more music 😛

Brad and Lex, I really enjoyed your reaction. My wife and I love the Carpenters! We got married August 16th, 1970 and their song We've Only Just Begun came out on August 20th. So it holds a special meaning for us. We even bought their first album Close To You when it came out and we still enjoy it. We got a chance to see them live a couple of years later and they were amazing. Looking forward to more Carpenters reactions! Best wishes!

Sometimes song lyrics are written on the fly, and that was the case with a line in this song. Says Paul Williams: "On 'Rainy Days And Mondays' Chuck Kay, who was head of publishing at A&M, said, 'That's a perfect song for The 5th Dimension, let's play it for them.' I said, 'Well, there are a couple of lines that aren't done yet.' He said, 'You'll finish it in the car.' So in the car going over there, I came up with a fill line, which was 'What I've got they used to call the blues.' I didn't have that line done yet, so I wrote it as just a quick fill line, because I wanted to mention the blues, but it was such a hackneyed expression, 'I've got the blues.' So I just wrote, 'What I've got they used to call the blues.' And it actually became my favorite line in the song. I think it's the best line in the song. I met Johnny Mercer once at A&M Records, and he sat down and I introduced myself, 'Paul Williams,' and he shook my hand. And he walked back into the studio where he was mixing, then he stuck his head back out into the hall and he went, 'Paul Williams, 'what I've got they used to call the blues,' that Paul Williams?' I said, 'Yes, sir.' It was funny. It was one of the great moments of my life, to meet Johnny Mercer, who I think was the lyricist's lyricist."
The 5th Dimension passed on this song, but the Carpenters picked it up, giving them their second hit written by Williams and Nichols, who also wrote "We've Only Just Begun"

Great story! I have loved the Carpenters since Close To You came out. Just outstanding talented musicians. Karen's voice is heaven to the ears and their harmonies are lush and warming.

A magistral interpretation. The way she played drum, beautiful. I love her jazz funk register as a solo artist, as well

Her voice is just so beautiful. What a talent. If you haven't done one yet, do a Karen Carpenter drum solo video. It's a different side of her, and gives you an extra dimension of her musical gifts.

The absolutely and incredibly talented Karen Carpenter. Such a beautiful ( and the most beautiful in my lifetime ) voice from any female I ve listened to. I have many but she s at the top ( alone ) on mine. I will always miss her as a young star who left us far too soon. She never made a bad song. Thankfully she left us a treasure of so many wonderful songs.

Karen Carpenters voice was like liquid gold, smoothest female voice ever. We had so much musical talent in the 70's, thumping rap doesnt hold a candle to this eras endless variety of amazing music.
