- Taking a road trip in the Mach-E, or any EV, requires a bit more planning than if you are traveling in a gas car. But, it is not difficult at all. In this video, I show three tools that I use when planning road trips in the Mustang Mach-E. These include the car's built in navigations system (Ford SYNC), the car's app (FordPass), and A Better Route Planner (ABRP).

Did you get a build date yet? I have a (second) Premium 4X on order with no build date yet. Was thinking of cancelling and ordering a GT but my dealer advised that doing so would considerably push back my delivery date.
Waiting on our 4x premium. Ordered February. It’s built and waiting on a microchip. Delivery in a few weeks they say. It’s been a long wait.

I plan on doing an in-depth road trip video too. I want to cover stuff like how to use PlugShare to find EV hotels.
I've also noticed that walking outside really does help boost my mood. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now and hope to keep it up as a lifestyle change!

Great overview, thanks for doing this, looks like the Mach E makes it pretty simple. Would be nice to get those city names in there, but hopefully that's coming in a software update. For big road trips I always double check with ABRP to see if there's a faster way or something I haven't considered. I've found it to be super accurate.
I'm the same way. I check FordPass and ABRP... and just regular ol' Google Maps. I'll also sometimes use PlugShare to check out the ratings of chargers if there are options so we can get the best one.
Thank you for showing. The Ford system did a great job on planning your route, pretty much the same result as a better routeplanner without the hassle.
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. A friend has suggested doing some more "head to head battles" between ABRP and SYNC to see how they fare.

@@Livshaka yeah, its a bit of a want as opposed to a need but my current vehicle will be ready to tag out in about a year and it would be awesome to get in on the EV revolution earlier as opposed to later. Really enjoying the videos and the knowledge you pass!

A great summary of trip planning and I wish had seen it yesterday unfortunately I did not and had to struggle through my own brutal lesson today. However I have several gripes which need addressing. I live in Arizona and struggling with a heavy plug in an uncovered charging station at 108 degrees its a tough lesson. Why don't they put covers over these chargers. The hoses are heavy and making a solid contact is tough. The chargers have an identifying code why isn't it on the screen.When the car says battery low it is very frightening to a newbe.A nearby bathroom would be helpful. I can see a wonderful opportunity to make a charging station a retail opportunity.
Hey Michael, I could not agree more about charging stations. They are woefully under outfitted and I feel positive that it will change in the future. But at the moment it's definitely a bit rough! In our recent road trip video, we stopped at a great charging station in Baker, California, that was fully covered, had restrooms, food, and even shade to eat under. I hope that all stations evolve into that kind of facility.
Those heavy cables are the reason EA has such a bad rap. Because they use those f-ing cables (which are water cooled, supposedly), often an error results when plugging them in. EA is a disaster for all the non-Tesla EV’s. They need to replace ALL their cables with longer, substantially lighter cables. F, GM, VW, LCID, Porche, BMW, should offer to help pay for it. It’s in all their self-interests to do so ASAP or TSLA will continue to eat their lunch. What a mess this has become - an engineering mistake of colossal proportions.

there is one point I would like to add to your video according to the ABRP:
You're able to add each charging stop according the planed time of charging. In You Video you could see that the ABRP said that you only have to charge for 10 minutes. As I mentioned you can change the charging time. And than you can decrease the numbers of stops. It works!!!

Great tip! I thought I might go into those types of details on an ABRP in a future video. I'm trying to keep the videos shorter since some have complained about the hour long road trip videos.

Gee, Patrick, somehow I missed this one and I've been looking for coaching on using the native Navigator. I have usually defaulted to the Apple CarPlay GPS...but that's not a trip planner nor does it give any charging info. So this video is EXCELLENT. Thanks.

In answer to the questions in the video 'Which is your favorite?' and 'Is there something else that you use?'. I have not used any of these three yet on a trip. I basically use the location data from Plugshare and have my own spreadsheet listing preferred locations, number of plugheads, network, and backup locations. Our first EV's were Smart fortwo's bought in 2018 (we still have them) and we learned quickly to have one or more backup charging locations on a trip. Also to leave enough available SOC to get top the next EVSE. As we charged at one stop we would look ahead for the next best place, hopefully a place with something to do while we were charging, which in a Smart fortwo ED on a L2 could be a couple of hours. We just took delivery on our used Mach E CA Rte 1 two weeks ago as it replaced a 2017 Ford Focus Electric (bought in 2019) as our trip maker so we are familiar with using SYNC. There is a lot I like about the SYNC Navigation app, however, it can be annoying, and yes, the city location would be nice as pointed out in this (and many) videos. I have the learned not to blindly follow the SYNC 3 navigation app as it sometimes sends people in odd directions. Also the nav function does not like unplanned stops to stretch or go to the bathroom. Still learning SYNC 4 and will probably try that and Fordpass on a trip where I already know where I'm going to test them further. Will probably test ABRP at some point. However for me, I need to know that a backup charging locations and distances. With the range of the Mach E that will be so much easier. Going forward our charging stops will likely coincide with stretch/rest/bathroom breaks.

Adding more information about the charging stops is one of the things that I hope to see Ford update in the near future. This seems to be an obvious, low-hanging-fruit, kind of a change, and much more worth development time than tic-tac-toe and a calculator. The Mach-E is still relatively new in its development cycle, but Ford will need to demonstrate that it can make improvements to its software as a sign that it is serious about EV technology.
I'd like to see some of the features of ABRP and PlugShare make it into Ford SYNC/Fordpass.
ABRP is a good tool. I’m interested because I’ve ordered a Mach-E. I used ABRP to plan a trip from the Bay Area to Chicago for both a Model Y and my Mach-E. The app predicts that the Y would take 8 fewer hours and cost about one-third as much as it would with the Mach-E. The estimated $ cost for the Mach-E was close to the cost for the trip in my Audi A6 2.0 which has gotten 32 mpg for that trip. I wonder if the extra 8 hours could cause another night in a hotel.
Thanks for sharing your approach. Have you found that any one of these is more accurate in predicting your actual SoC upon arrival at a charging station? It sounds like it would be possible to do a head-to-head test of ABRP vs FordPass/Sync4…
In one example, our trip from Denver to Cedar City, they had differences but they both picked the same charging locations. I'll do some comparisons soon and see.

Nice. Thanks. I’ve yet to make a road trip in the MMEx, so I take my ICE car instead. Does the car navigation or FordPass app allow for entering the destination SOC or charger SOC setting like ABRP does? I could see how that is an important feature. (Apologies if this was already asked in the comment section.)
It doesn't and that is a very good point. I might see if I can suggest that addition to both FordPass and SYNC.
Thanks for your video. Well done. I recently test drove a Mach-e but could not test all of it. Is there a way to see if the proposed chargers are working or if they are fully used?
It doesn't in the Sync system, but using ABRP does (via the Android Auto or CarPlay interface). A lot of times, I just have Liv check on PlugShare before we get there to see if there have been reported issues like slow chargers or anything like that.

Hi! Long time, been enjoying my Mach E. Seems like since I got it all I see are Tesla's now! (Nothing against Tesla's at all, I still want an X) But I saw one Gray Mach E in the wild and was so excited.
Back to the subject, if I were to stop at the first recommended charger and charged up to 80% and not the 43% recommended, does it keep the other recommended chargers on the route still or do they go away because of the adjustment. Just curious.
It will adapt on its own. I usually just stop and then restart the navigation over again to make sure.

I haven't tried that. I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you know.
What about adding hotels/motels with overnight EV charging?
The way I did that was that I used Plugshare to find hotels with EV charging. In Vegas, it helped a lot because some hotels had chargers but only for valet parking.
Hi I also live in CO and am thinking about getting a Mach-E. I really want to be able to take day trips into the mountains, for example driving from Denver up to Estes Park and doing the full RMNP loop and back. How have road trips been for you within CO? Have you found charging stations in the mountains to be plentiful and reliable enough? Does the in-car navigation do a good job of planning routes with charging in mind?
You could likely do that loop without even needing to charge, but if you do, Colorado has quite a few charging stations throughout the state. I know there are stations in Estes Park, Grand Lake, Longmont, Boulder, etc.
The car does a really good job of adding stops as needed for charging. You can also use websites/apps like PlugShare to check your route and destination for charging options.

Patrick, am I wrong or did the times to charge increase after you transferred from Ford Pass to the Car?
They did. I think the first charge increased because my battery state f charge was lower. But the car will also modify based on what it thinks the weather, traffic, etc. will be like.

What happens if you take a longer break and charge more than the car calculated? I assume that will re-calculate the rest of the route and charging plan?
Yes. Depending on which system you use, either the car will automatic automatically adjust the Ford app or the car’s navigation system. if you use A Better Route Planner you’ll need to manually enter your state of charge into the app as he said. Once new data is inputted, the app will adjust the route and charging stops.

I enjoyed your video as usual. Why is it that Ford can have cities on the Ford Pass but not Ford Sync?! It should also not be too hard for Ford to have amenities at the stop listed too. I have a smart phone, but my wife does not and does not plan on getting one. For her to drive the Mach e as it is, would be inconvenient. That said, I am still up in the air as to purchasing the Mach e or Tesla MY. I will be making my choice this fall. If Tesla opens up their charging infrastructure to others as we are told, I may opt for the Mach e, but I still hear bad things about Ford dealers knowing little to nothing about how the car even works or after the sale help with issues. Your long trips are helping sway me though.
There are many Ford dealers that are still getting up to speed on the Mach-E. Many haven't had one on their showroom floor for more than a few days. My local dealer was lacking at first but now they are great. Even the service shop is doing well.
That was a very helpful video. Thank you for doing it. I just took delivery of my Mach E and my wife and I have a trip planned for Nov 18th from Palos Verdes, California to Williams, Arizona. This is my first EV. I have the Select model RWD with the comfort and technology package so I do not have as much battery range as you do. I am a little afraid of doing this trip in the Mach E because I am worried about running out of juice somewhere on the trip and being stranded in the middle of no where. After watching your video, I planned the trip on the Ford Pass app and sent it to the vehicle. Do you think that will work for me and not be so apprehensive. Since I just got the car, I have never used a charging station. I believe I have 250 kWh of complementary charging with Electrify America. I was thinking about going to a local charging station before I leave on the trip so I can make sure I know how to use a charging station. What do you think.
Yeah, I think it can be very helpful to test out fast charging before you actually go on a road trip. It isn't a bad thing to be a little extra cautious when you are first trying it out. We are still a little cautious and usually charge to at least 80% even when it says we can do less. If you do find yourself running short on range, just slow down by 10 mph and you'll get some extra range.

I went out to my car and turned it on and I thought I would see it on the screen when I started the car but I did not see it. Is there somewhere on the screen that I have to navigate to find it? Or did I do something wrong? Thanks for the help.
@@NitemareTrainer I thought it popped up when you went to navigate. If not, look for the "Saved" tab when you are about to enter a location in the Navigation. It should be there. If it isn't, then the car didn't receive it and you should try to send it again.
@@MachE_VLOG You made it look so easy on the video sending the trip from the Ford Pass app to the vehicle but I have tried it several times and it has not been sent to the vehicle. When I sat inside the car, I turned it on and the trip did not show up on my screen like it did in your video. I went to the Ford Pass app on the screen in the car and did not see an option to show the trip, so I must be doing something wrong. If you can help me, I would appreciate it.
I would love to use ford gps to route my trips, but every time I turn on that feature it would reduce my estimated range by 30 miles. It’ll take about a week of charging and using android auto for it to go back to normal
Your actual range won't change no matter what route planning system you use. But, the range estimate may change if you use the Ford system. That is because the Ford system does a more accurate job predicting your range when it knows your destination and can modify its estimate based on driving speed, road elevation, and weather.
Is there a way to use waze natively on sync 4?
You can do it massively. It has to be via Android Auto or CarPlay. I think you may be able to use AppLink, but that still requires your phone.
@@MachE_VLOG can you also use onboard navigation while still operating apple CarPlay?
@@codyaltman29 Yep. You can switch back and forth between CarPlay nav and Ford Sync nav. And the navigation directions from the one you are using shows turn-by-turn directions on the driver's screen.
@@MachE_VLOG so you can use turn by turn directions on the sync nav for regular navigation while using apple car on main screen for traffic reports on Waze? At the same time.
@@codyaltman29 No, only one can be active at a time. But if you use the Ford nav, you can still have music or whatever playing with CarPlay. And then if you decide to use Waze on CarPlay, you can switch over with no problem.
Can it do a round trip? So you know you can actually make it back on the way home on a day trip before you even begin.
Yes, you can add stops, so just add a stop back at home and it will handle the rest.
