    This was the second tutorial I've seen on using LOS. From yours, there are several items of info. that stood out: labeling yogurt containers and using a lid on the LOS (wow! why suffer, right?), using a swab to dispense LOS (save a spoon!), and cutting up the polishing cloth into 3x3 pieces to get more usage, better control (instead of using entire 10x7 cloth). Thank you, Kelly!

I use a swab with the L.O.S. so i don't use much and it lasts longer, that stuff isn't cheap! And yes, quite stinky hehe. Thank you xx

      You don’t have to coat your copper, you can just polish it with a silver polishing cloth every now and then. The sealant is expensive, but then you don’t have to keep polishing your piece. I use protectaclear by everbrite. Thank you 🌹

    this video tutorial helped me learn so much! only question I have is: when using light colored stones/gems, would the L.O.S and bicarbonate damage them? I've only seen this technique on dark colored stones, and I just didn't know how you'd recommend going about doing patina on light colored stones to aid in getting the tarnish off pieces?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some stones don’t like the LOS and they say as a rule don’t oxidise pearls. I haven’t had any problems, I oxidise everything 😅 I’ve found rose quartz goes lighter and looses that pink colour, I wouldn’t oxidise anything that has a coating, like coloured beads, the coating may rub off with the wire wool. Also when cleaning off the tarnish, put your thumb over the stone so you’re just rubbing the copper the best you can. Hope this helps 🌹

    • @KellyJonesJewellery

      Yes I think that’s the same thing. Pour it into the los when finished with and it will neutralise it so you can dispose of it safely 👍 and thank you ❤️

  • @rainebolton6495
    @rainebolton6495 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the tutorial, I have read that some stones are damaged by los patina, I think its stones softer than 6. I have seen some people "protect" stone by putting latex tape (for nails) on stone front, but the patina can still seep into the pores all around the stone and change it's colour so might be best to check the stone is strong enough before patina or add the stone later if possible. Hope you don't mind me adding that tip for people reading the comments x

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, sometimes I think the water can be damaging too if too hot. I wouldn't recommend tape, you're putting your piece into a patina bath and the tape will just get soaked. I can't remove my stones so it's best to check the hardness first. I'm not sure of the strengths, I know rose quartz loses some colour, I've heart pearls get really quite damaged. So it's just triel and error really, you could always ask in the Facebook groups, someone will know 👍

    How necessary is the baking soda rinse? I've been oxidizing without rinsing in baking soda for some time now. I never knew about that step. I just rinse with cold water after the LOS bath. Plus, I use soapy water with my steel wool to clean off the oxidization. Is that bad?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at all, if that works for you then go for it. I see the baking soda as a stop to the process. I like that clean feel but that's just me, do whatever works for you.

    Hi, thanks for the useful video. I have some question, since some beads/stone not suitable dip into sulphur, so what’s the different if I oxidize the wire first before I start wrapping ?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I oxidise after wrapping because then you get all the details, the dark parts are underneath and the shiny parts on the surface. If you oxidised your wires first I don’t know if that would work out?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, this is just an example of what I do. Keeping the copper shiny is a great idea and I love the look but it doesn't tend to last. Maybe there is a cleaner you could use? As for coloured copper I've not really tried that, I made a ring once and I used silver weaving wire ❤️ The tree of Life on here I really love, I can't remember how I made it but I'll have a good think, I've had another request for it too. Thanks for your comment ❤️

      Oh I'm so glad you said that. I bought some and I painted it on so not to cover the stone, I don't know if I did something wrong but my copper darkened after a few weeks, also I dipped a few chains and it only lasted 3 weeks then a dark line appeared on the skin, (I tested it on my a few of my pieces and then wore them) Have you tried it on chains? I'm willing to give it another go, maybe I should put a second or third coating on ❤

    😊 great video!! Really interesting and informative...my question is do you do this after you make the piece and before you sell it? Would it be easier to treat the wire's first before creating anything?? How long does it last before it turns? Thank you!!

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As you clean off all the black it stays in the cracks and between the wires, giving it that vintage look. If you oxidise a single piece of wire, it then just cleans off and there’s no colour between wires. Oxidising brings out all the detail in the weaves and where the wires meet 👍. Hope that helps 💕

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It still needs polishing when oxidised, it’ll keep nice but you’ll still need a rub with a polishing cloth now and then to keep it nice 👍

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! I think you can use the yellow polishing end on a Dremel, the M3, yellow, grit polishing end (can't remember what it's called, I use the green one for polishing). There are quite a few stones that will lose their colour or shine or even dissolve in the los mix, some stones dissolve in water 😅 so it's best to check, there are loads of really good groups on Facebook where you could ask.
      I've found rose quartz fades and loses it's pink colour, pearls are a no go, hot water will break some stones, like labradorite and moonstone, so do take care, you want warm, not hot 👍 good luck and have fun 💕

    When I used the LOS and then let the pieces sit, after polishing them, not only did they tarnish in the high spots they also continued to tarnish (green and in some places like caked on somehow?$ in the nooks and crannies. What did I do wrong?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After los, rinse with the bicarbonate of soda mix, then rinse with water. Give it a good rub with fine wirewool, rinse again and clean all the wirewool bits off. Then you must dry the piece! Wrap in tissue, then again in dry tissue. If you leave your piece wet it will tarnish a lot. Then polish with a silver polishing cloth.
      That's what I do, hope this answers your question ❤️

      If you look at the finished thing at the end, ( after you've cleaned a lot of the black off), it doesn't really change much after that, it will go slightly orange over time (copper) but you can polish it gently with a polishing cloth to keep the shiny surfaces 🌸 hope this helps ❤️

    Hi, Kelly. Does the oxidation stop the copper from turning the skin green? Thank you!

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, as the copper oxidises naturally over time the dirt turns green on your skin. So if you keep cleaning your pendant with a silver polishing cloth it shouldn't mark the skin so much. Hope that helps.

  • @Mass-jab-death-2025
    @Mass-jab-death-2025 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you seal the copper with metal clear coat to stop it oxidising and discolouring the skin ?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I did try that a few times but it still goes dark over time. If you want to stop the copper from staining your skin, then keep it clean, clean the piece regularly with a silver polishing cloth, that will minimise the dirt from the copper rubbing off onto your skin.

  • @JulieHallthewriter
    @JulieHallthewriter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have 2 questions about oxidizing copper: Does it only work on bare (untreated copper)? Does the oxidation affect stones that are not natural, such as resin stones?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't oxidised any resin, so I'm not sure. Your copper (or silver) needs to be uncoated, bare wire. Then the oxidising will work well. Coated wire will not tarnish, also silver filled is not very good with oxidising because the silver can rub off with the wire wool.

    How do you protect them for long term and avoid staiion skin?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately all the protectors I've tried have failed, the one that lasted, turned the copper dark over time, so it wasn't as pretty. A quick rub with a polishing cloth every now and then is the best answer, the copper is actually quite good for your skin (or so I've read) 😅 have fun 💕

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi and thank you. The process doesn't change the stones just the metal. You can use the same process for sterling silver and bronze too. Some stones are affected slightly, I've noticed rose quartz darkens and blue tigers eye dullens, maybe use cooler water and less bicarbonate mix, you could always use less L.O.S. and leave the jewellery in the mix for longer.
      Hope this helps, Kel x

      It doesn't go silver, it goes dark, then you clean the surfaces leaving the dark tones between the wires. I think mine may look silver due to the lighting (I do oxidise silver sometimes too).

    • @shineypenny
      @shineypenny 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KellyJonesJewellery is it the same process to oxidize silver? What happens to the "silver" coated copper wire that is sold pretty standardized in whatever-craft-store USA? Also, is copper that has been oxidized easier on your skin? I don't mean for allergies to the metal...just as far as it turning your skin wonky colors. And lastly, do you have any tips on a coating that can be applied to the copper (or whatever the metal may be, unless there's some reaction between the two, I suppose...) To prevent that skin reaction from occuring. Or even something that would delay the reaction- aside from clear nail polish, (which I know is a poor choice for a variety of reasons), and I've tried E6000... but not over large surface areas, and definitely have not tried coating an entire piece, mainly because it's so thick and also I can't imagine accomplishing it with out getting SOMETHING, even finger prints stuck in it somewhere at some point. I just liked that it's waterproof, for the most part... Or so it says. The one project I tried it on the glue ended up too thick, and slightly, noticeably yellowed... Though it is SUPPOSED to dry clear. I've often wondered- did I do it wrong? We're my hands just dirty, and that's the yellowing? Either way...I didn't like it, so I pulled it off. Which, I believe, as it IS glue, I was not supposed to be able to do, at least not as easily as I managed it..
      I KNOW this is quite a lot of questions, and it's all in one big mess of a run on paragraph... My apologies, truly...I can get a bit carried away sometimes. 😱🤯
      But any help you have in relation to ANY of my many questions, would be very helpful and appreciated quite a lot!!!

      Yes, because the oils from your hands can interfere with the consistency of the application.

      The materials should be listed in the description, it's LOS, liver of sulphur, XL gel 👍

    What is your method of oxidizing when you absolutely can't risk LOS touching soft stones like opals? Thanks.

      It's a risk, if I can't oxidise it then it stays bare.

    What black liquid did you use?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery

      Liver if sulphur. I've recently done a new oxidising video and will be uploading it soon 👍

    Do the pendants smell weird after oxidizing?

    • @Fallenblossoms
      @Fallenblossoms 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And where do you get your copper wire from? I usually go to craft stores but I feel like there has to be better quality copper wire somewhere just don’t know where to look

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they don't smell weird, not that I've noticed. The oxidising liquid smells weird 😅 but the pendant are fine afterward.

      I'm in the UK, so I get my wire from metalclays4u, I also buy from Rio Grande in USA 👍 I always buy raw uncoated, soft copper, or dead soft if your in the USA.

    Do you know if there is a way to make it black?

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, the dark oxidised colour rubs off. You could use coloured wire?

    • @gc0009
      @gc0009 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is a thing that is called ''bluing'', it preserves metal pieces, but i don't know if sticks into wire, because most people use in steel metal parts. you could test it.

    I should have made it a comment directly to the video, but by mistake I made my comment...which is really QUESTIONS, as a reply to someone else's comment...SORRY! ....I was learning....lol .
    And
    .I guess I missed the coating answer AND skin reaction before I asked the question. oops! ... So ignore that one. SORRY

    • @KellyJonesJewellery
      @KellyJonesJewellery  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hehe, no worries. I like to clean the copper regularly, then you don't get much of the discolouration off it. Also coated wire won't take to the patina 😊
